PAGE 6—The Southern Cross, July 2, 1964
If it is difficult to pound out
a weekly column, it is doubly
so in the heat of summer. When
the brain cells seem to be baked
hard and unproductive, every
one seems to be vacationing and
not much interested in read
ing newspapers and activities
have slowed down so that there
is little to report. Furthermore,
all the canned and ready-made
articles have been used up re
cently, and so necessarily we
must go “ back to the drawing
-board’*. Hence, this may result
in a mish-mash or potpouri.
* * *
Already looking ahead to the
fall observance of Catholic
Youth Week the National Office
of CYO recently announced the
theme as "Love in Truth, Bond
of Unity." This theme is a re
minder to our youth that in this
Ecumenical age, all Christians,
regardless of age, must work
for that unity so earnestly de
sired by Christ. Striving for
this unity, young Catholics must
be guided by a profound love
for the truth, together with a
deep and universal love for our
non-Catholic brethren."
It will be up to the ingenuity
of the parish unit and the mod
erator to implement this plan
at the grass-roots level.Inter
faith meetings must get epis
copal approbation. Discussions
and exchanges of religious con-
vicitions must be extremely
carefully planned. Haphazard
dialogues would be hazardous
and destroy the very object of
the ecumenical movement, and
only result in confusion for
all. But a well-thought out plan
can carry out the theme and
harvest good fruits.
* * #
An unintended result of the
renewal and reforms and the ad
vance of liturgical changes is
the confusion on the part of
some people as to what tra
ditional devotions should be
supplanted and which ones
steadfastly maintained. Bishop
Wright of Pittsburgh, always a
man with startling ideas and
fresh expressions of old truths
made the news recently in this
vein.
While approving two devo
tional exercises at wakes for
the dead, he stated he is him
self not enthusiastic about their
substitution for the Rosary at
such a time. In a letter to his
priests, he wrote that he would
be grateful for all manner of
prayers at his own eventual
wake, but he certainly counts
on affectionate recitation of the
Rosary by good souls who sur
vive him.
* ‘If by any chance, no one who
comes to my modest wake has
with him the beads with which
to lead the Rosary, I suggest
that an appropriate person
search any pockets. Underneath
my liturgical vestments, he will
find, unless I’ve been robbed,
the cherished beads with which
we priests and faithful seek to
add humble private prayers to
those supremely hallowed
mementos in the Mass, that we
give to those we love, at the Al
tar of God.”
Bishop Wright said that the
Rosary had a place in the tra
ditions of Catholic popular piety
in time of sorrow, such that he
would never say the word that
would downgrade it, no matter
how many or excellent the devo
tions that supplement it.
Traditionalists can take heart
that not everything they learned
at their mother’s knee will be
come passe in the reform move
ments. At the same time, all re
joice that the vernacular will
soon be used in the Holy Sac
rifice, enabling greater vocal
participation with the priest of
ferer, and symbolizing a great
er bond of unity between flock
and shepherd.

Very soon now, we hope to be
able to give a picture-story of
a couple who are participating in
the International High School
Program, a type of foreign
student exchange, whereby a
young man or woman from an
other country pursues studies in
the U. S., while living as guest
in a sponsoring home.

At that time Pope Pius also
voiced the hope that science
would find ways to make the
rhythm method more accurate.
Pope Paul, concluding his
comments on his own pon
tificate, referred to current
"formidable problems," and
singled out one: “The problem
everybody is talking about—that
is, of so-called birth control;
that is to say of population
growth on the one hand and of
family morality on the other."
Pope Paul continued:
“It is an extremely serious
problem. It touches the source
of human life. It touches senti
ments and concerns which are
closest to the experience of man
and woman. It is an extremely
complex and delicate problem.
“The Church recognizes its
manifold aspects, that is to say

FINALLY, TOM’S example is
personal to me at this very
moment. On July 8 I will be
entering the hospital to under
go open-heart surgery. There
will be the jagged scar of the
heart surgeon and I pray that
I might say with Tom "it will
go no deeper than my flesh."
I will need to remember the
things Tom said to me as he
faced surgery. "God has given
me the most hideous painful
cancer at an extremely young
age. It is a gift. He wants me to
use it.” God has also given me
this condition which requires I
bear pain for Him pain, suffer
ing, fear, loneliness in union
with Him. Tom was an example
in health and so was he in sick
ness. And may I utter the spirit
of his words from a sickbed:
"The storm around me does
not matter. The winds within
me do not matter. Nothing hu
man on earth can touch me. A
wilder storm of peace gathers
in my heart. How can people
endure anything on earth if they
cannot have God? " There are
many meditations to be found
in the Tom Dooley Story which
is now being filmed, but the
story behind the scenes is an
even more impressive one,
the multiple spheres of com
petence. Among these, that of
the spouses is certainly pre
eminent — their liberty, their
conscience, their love and their
duty.
“But the church must also
affirm her part, that is, God’s
law, which she interprets,
teaches, promotes and de
fends. And the Church will have
to proclaim this law of God in
the light of scientific, social
and psychological truths which
in recent times have had new
and very extensive study and
documentation.
“It will be necessary to look
carefully and squarely at this
theoretical as well as practical
development of the question.
And this is what the Church is
in fact doing. The question is
under study, a study as broad
and deep as possible, that is,
in the serious and honest man
ner a question of such impor
tance demands.
“It is under study, we re
peat, and we hope soon to con
clude (this study) with the help
of many eminent scholars. We
shall quickly issue its conclus
ions in the form which is judg
ed most adequate to the sub
ject treated and to the goal
to be achieved.
“But meanwhile we say
frankly that as of now we do
not have sufficient reason to
regard the norms given
by Pope Pius XII as surpassed,
and therefore not binding. They
must therefore be considered
valid, at least until we feel bound
in conscience to modify them.
In a subject of such gravity, it
certainly seems that Catholics
should want to follow a single
law, such as the Church au
thoritatively proposes. And it
therefore seems opportune to
recommend that nobody for the
time being take it upon himself
to speak in term s different from
the norms in force."

Hibernians Eulogize
Walter M. Crawford
The Hibernian Soceity of Sa
vannah has honored the late
Walter M. Crawford in a reso
lution eulogizing his life and
activities on behalf of Church,
community and the poor of Sa
vannah. Said the resolution:
* * *
God, in His infinite wisdom,
called to Himself Walter M.
Crawford on April 11, 1964 at
the age of 73 years, and in his
passing, the Hibernian Society
of Savannah, the Cathedral Par
ish and our Community of Sa
vannah have lost a devoted
member and an exemplary citi
zen, who will long be remem
bered as a true Christian gen
tleman, who leaves behind him
a tradition of unselfish service
to others.
Born of Irish and German
ancestry in Screven County,
Georgia, he was the son of
John H. and Mary Anna Fries
Crawford. Both his paternal
grandparents were natives of
Ireland.
Isolated as it was in Screven
County the Crawfordfamily kept
its Faith under severe handi
caps. Visits of a priest to this
section were few and far be
tween. One time there was a
period of thirteen years when no
priest came to the Crawford
family. However, the parents
brought each of their children to
Savannah to be baptized. In the
asbence of any church ser
vices, the Crawford family held
its own home prayer meeting
every Sunday and woe to the
child who did not know his
Catechism Lesson. Walter
Crawford was well grounded
in his religion.
In his youth, Walter Craw
ford was educated in the schools
of Screven County and in 1918
served his country in World War
I.
In 1922, he entered the in
surance business in Savannah
and earned an outstanding re
putation in that field. When he
retired in 1958, he was Mana
ger of the local office of the

the cause of interracial justice,
he said.
"And, last but not least, we
can all join * with Pope Paul
in praying earnestly for the
priceless blessing of univer
sal peace—a peace which he
envisions as being ‘not only
the absence of warlike rival
ries or of armed factions, but
a reflection of the order de
sired by God the Creator and

ted desire for active harmony
inspired by the true God of
mankind with unfeigned char
ity."

Company.
In 1941, he was wedded to
Miss Mary Miles, who survives
him.
He was a member of the
American Legion, a Fourth De
gree Knight of Columbus and
became a member of our Hi
bernian Society in 1939.
For well over a quarter of a
century, he was president of the
Cathedral St Vincent de Paul
Conference and as such almost
daily was actively engaged in
helping the poor and needy with
rent, food, clothes and money.
In appreciation for his devo
tion and dedicated zeal to this
quiet work of charity, the Holy
Father awarded him the Papal
Medal "Pro Ecclesia et Ponti-
fice" in February of this year.
As his rector, Monsignor Mc
Namara has so well said: "So
dedicated was Mr. Crawford
that only God knows the great
good he accomplished for souls
in implementing the corporal
and spiritual works of mercy.
He did so much for Christ, as
he sought to meet the needs of
the poor and homeless, that we
are confident that God has long
since said to him, ‘Well done,
thou good and faithful ser
vant.’ ’’
Therefore, be it resolved that

"The Negro family in Ameri

He advocated such anti-pov

Turning to the international

There is "a rising concern

He noted that the proportion

In England
LONDON (NC) — The Catho

They also provided for use
of the vernacular in the admin

except Orders, and agreed to
the immediate use of English for

priests who are dispensed from
the traditional requirement for
Latin.
