Sentiment Growing To
Change Abortion Law
TOKYO (NC) — Public sen
timent is growing to change
Japan’s abortion law which
has opened the door to legal
operations for about 2 mil
lion women each year.
According to Father Anthony
Zimmerman, S. V. D., an
American expert on population
problems here, the law is
eroding the physical and mo
ral health of the nation and
poses a threat to Japan’s eco
nomic future.
In an article for the Divine
Word News Service, thelowa-
born priest pointed out that
1.8 million persons petitioned
the Japanese Diet (parliament)
last year to amend or revoke
the law. When this move was
unsuccessful, many of them
joined the Movement to Treat
Life Respectufully which aims
to change the national policy.
Medical experts here are
increasingly concerned about
the problem. Father Zimmer
man quotes one high official
of the Japan Medical Asso
ciation as saying: ‘‘Things
can’t go on like this. The
law is open to massive abuse.
The number of abortions a-
mong the unmarried is apal-
ling. Venereal disease is on
the rise. Women suffer phy
sical damage and the baby
population is being deci
mated.”
According to Father Zim
merman, professor of moral
theology at the Divine Word
Seminary in Nagoya, every
third abortion is performed
for an unmarried woman, of
ten a juvenile.
“Complaints are surpris
ingly high even among mar
ried women,” he said. “A-
mong 885 who have experienc
ed abortion, 24% complained
of lingering bad effects. . .
The rate of complaints rises
to 40% after three abortions,
and to 52% after four. Doctors
advise against having more
than four abortions because
of increasing risks.”
The Japan Medical Asso
ciation is considering alter
natives to the law. Even the
Japan Family Planning As
sociation is against it, said
Father Zimmerman, while
adding that the latter group
may spread the epidemic by
immoderate promotion of fa
mily planning.
The American priest de
clared that the slowed popu
lation growth will eventually
cause a shortage in the num
bers of laborers and profes
sional men. Doctors are con
cerned about the shortage of
doctors, especially as the
number of aged increases. It
is estimated that in another
decade the size of graduating
classes in schools will shrink
by 37%.
“On the other hand,” he
concluded, “the practice of
abortion has become so deep
ly embedded into the social
and economic life of the na
tion that it would be unrea
listic to await a change over
night. Change awaits a far-
reaching reeducation of the
public mind and the estab
lishment of better living con
ditions.
“The Sato regime (Prime
Minister Eisaku Sato) has an
nounced plans to carry through
appropriate measurers. In
this context, a reform of the
abortion law within several
years appears most certain.”

Press Effectiveness In
Mission Work Stressed
CHICAGO (NC)--The ef
fectiveness of the written word
in missionary work of the ca
tholic church was extolled by
Msgr. Kenneth G. Stack, pub
lisher of Extension magazine,
in a sermon here.
Msgr. Stack preached at the
Mass in the annual observance
of Catholic Press Month in
Old St. Mary’s church. Jour
nalists of the major daily
newspapers, religious and
community press and the radio
and TV media attended.
The monsignor related how
an article written by the late
Bishop Francis Clement
Kelley led to the founding of
the Catholic Church Extension
Society and Extension maga
zine. Bishop Kelley was a
priest in Chicago at the time.
“In the course of a lecture
EINDHOVEN, The Nether
lands (NC)--Congregations at
aU the Sunday Masses at aca-
tholic parish here were in
formed by their bishop that
both their pastor and assistant
curate have asked to be re
duced to the lay state so that
they can marry.
Bishop Willem Bekkers of
’s Hertogenbosch made the an
nouncement at all six Masses
at the Church of Our Lady of
the Rosary (Feb. 6). Declaring
that the two priests feel they
can no longer accept the obli
gation of celibacy, he asked
that the people neither judge
nor reproach them.
Bishop Bekkers said that
both priests want to remain
within the Church, and that
their “very sad” cases have
been referred to Rome.
He revealed that Father A.
W. Verweij, 50-year-old
priest who has been pastor
of the parish since 1955, in
tends to marry a widow with
four children. The 39-year-
old curate, Father P.J.J.M.
Pulles, hopes to marry a young
woman, he said.
“We must not hesitate to
mention these facts,” Bishop
Bekkers told the parishioners.
“I ask you not to make any
judgement and not to reproach
the two persons involved. No^
body knows better than I the
extent of the struggle and the
tragedy behind the decisions of
the priests, who want to re
main within the Church.”
tour, at the turn of the cen
tury, he came to know the
grinding poverty and degrada
tion of the rural catholic
churches in the Middle West,”
said Msgr. Stack.
“Later in his life, Father
Kelley was to author many
books and articles but none
of his writings was as im
portant as his attempt to tell
the story of the financial plight
of an indigent priest from
Ellsworth, Kans. and his
shanty church,” he continued.
“The moving story of the
church and rectory, ‘patched
and desolate, above whose
cracks and creaks the bliz
zard moans and chills, cel
larless, stairless and dreary*
was published in the Ec
clesiastical Review, then the
bible of the hierarchy and
clergy in America,” themon-
Father Verweij last year
celebrated the 25th anni
versary of his priestly ordina
tion. Father Pulles, who was
ordained in 1951, has been as
signed to Our Lady of the
Rosary parish since 19 6L
signor said.
“The response to the ap
peal was generous, and the
young author received encour
aging letters from all over
urging him to do something
about the shanty churches and
rectories in this country.”
On Oct. 18, 1905, the Ex
tension society was launched
by Father Kelley and 18 others
at a meeting in the home of
Archbishop James Quigley of
Chicago. Two years later,
Father Kelley founded Exten
sion magazine to help the
Society’s work.
Since then, 7,000 churches
and chaoels have been built
with funas raised by the maga
zine’s appeals. Thousands of
young men have been educated
for the priesthood, and thou
sands of indigent priests have
been subsidized by Extension,
Msgr. Stack related.
“Father Kelley knew he had
a tremendous potential in the
idea of an Extension Society,
“Msgr. Stack said, “but he
was practical enough to rea
lize that if no one ever heard
of his brainchild, it might just
as well have been stillborn.
“He did not believe in
Emerson’s dictum that if you
build a better mouse trap the
world will beat a path to your
door. You have to go out and
sell your product. And what
better way than through the
written word?” he said.

MRS. A.R. PAUL
Papal Blessing
For Sav. Woman
At its February meeting,
the Eucharistic League of Sa
cred Heart Church honored
one of its members, Mrs. An
drew R. Paul, in recognition
of more than thirty-five years
of unbroken service on the al
tar at Sacred Heart Church.
A framed blessing from Pope
Paul VI was presented to her
by the League’s Chaplain, Rev.
Timothy Flaherty, O.S.B., the
blessing reading, “Most Holy
Father, Elizabeth Kameron
Paul and family humbly pros
trate at the feet of your Holi
ness beg a special blessing as
a pledge of divine graces and
favors.”
In making the pre
sentation to Mrs. Paul, Father
Timothy said, “A great deal
of credit is due you for your
altar work through many
years. We are presenting this
to you as a sign of our de
votion and respect,”.The pas
tor, Rev. Terence Kernan, O.
S.B., conveyed the apprecia
tion of the parish, praising
Mrs. Paul’s loyalty and de
votion to the sanctuary.
Members of the Eucharist
League have the responsibility
for all the work connected with
the altar- the care of altar
linens and priests’ vestments,
providing of candles and flow
ers and everything else used
on the altar, polishing cande
labra, cleaning, in fact any
thing which may be necessary
to make the sanctuary a beau
tiful setting for Our Lord in
the tabernacle.
About 1929. even before the
League was organized, Mrs.;
Paul began assisting a small
group of women at Sacred
Heart Church in their week
ly work on the altar and she
has served continuously since
that time. One of her jobs
has been the laundering of al
tar linens and the number of
pieces she has done “would
stretch all the way to Rome
and back”, according to Mrs.
Helen Conners, League pre
sident.
Thus this quiet, unassuming
little lady, who can’t under
stand why she should be sing
led out for such an honor as
the Papal blessing, has de
voted a great portion of her
life to the service of her God.
However, her story is not
complete without giving cre
dit to her fine husband, Andy
Paul, who has encouraged
her in her work every step
of the way.
