SURVIVOR WONDERS
“Father, Why
Am I Alive?”
HARBOR BEACH, Mich.
(NC)—For seamen and their
families, November is a time
of fear in the Great Lakes
area. In 1913, in a six-day
period, 19 ships went down
and some 250 sailors lost
their lives in the storm-tossed
waters of these inland seas.
Eight years ago—in 1958—
the cargo vessel Carl D. Brad
ley sank in a Lake Michigan
storm, carrying 33 of her 35-
man crew to their deaths. Most
of the victims had been mem
bers of St. Ignatius parish in
nerby Rogers City.
At about 2 A.M., Nov. 29,
the gale-lashed waters of Lake
Huron broke the cargo vessel
Daniel J. Morrell in half. The
ship sank so quickly that for
some 32 hours the world didn’t

even know anything was amiss.
It was nearly 36 hours after
the sinking that the lone sur
vivor was found clinging to a
pontoon raft, floating offshore
of this tiny community. The
other 28 of the Morrell were
lost.
Dennis Hale, 27, of Ashta
bula, Ohio, wonders why he
survived. As he lay recuperat
ing in a hospital here, he asked
Father Cornelius N. Mc-
Eachin, pastor of Our Lady
of Lake Huron parish, “Why
am I alive?”
“Because it is God’s Will,”
the pastor answered.
Father McEachin stated that
the little lake-shore com
munity is taking this latest
tragedy in a “subdued” spirit
“It is quite natural that they
should. Many sailors make
their homes here. . .many of
this town’s men are on the
lake,” he said.
Pointing out that * ‘the seas
have always claimed their re
lentless toll in the sometimes
angry waters about Michi
gan,” The Saginaw (Mich.)
Catholic Weekly asked its
readers to “pray that God may
grant eternal peace to those
who have been lost, and to
guide in safety those who still
traverse our waters.”
.Bishop Michael J. Keyes, Bishop of savannah, bather Bonriice Bauer, u.S.B.
and Father Norbert McGowan, O.S.B. Father Aloysius Wacter, O.S.B. is in
second row.

The Sisters of St. Joseph
came to Savannah from St.
Augustine, Fla. in 1£67 to teach
at a school for Negro boys.
The Sisters had come to St.
Augustine, at the request of
Bishop Augustine Verot, in
1866. The Bishop had appeal
ed to the mission-minded Sis
ters at Le Puy, France for
volunteers to help in his war-
torn diocese. The order sent
eight sisters. The little band
increased in number by added
help from France and by en
trance into the community of
young American girls.
Among the group coming to
Savannah was a postulant,
Miss Catherine Kennedy of
Oswego, New York, who short
ly received the habit and the
name, Sister St. John. Two
years later she pronounced
her vows in the presence of
Bishop Verot in the Cathedral.
Among the Sisters who en
tered in Savannah were Sis
ter Francis Burke and Sis
ter Alphonsa Walsh.
The Sisters were placed in
charge of the Barry Male
Orphanage. In 1876 Bishop
Gross moved the Sisters and

orphan boys to Washington,
Ga. The Sisters of Saint Joseph
were absent from the Savannah
area until 1916 when six re
turned to the city to teach at
Sacred Heart School.
In Washington the Sisters
founded St. Joseph’s Academy
for Girls which they admin
istered in addition to the Home
for Boys. The Academy burned
in 1912 and was moved to Au
gusta in 1913.
In 1922, the Sisters of St.
Joseph of Georgia joined the
Sisters of St. Joseph of Caron
delet in St. Louis and became
the Augusta Province of that
Congregation. The Augusta
Province no longer exists, the
Sisters now being part of the
St. Louis Province.
