SAVANNAH PAPAL KNIGHT
Grady Retires After 47
Years With Liberty Bank
A banking career spanning
forty-seven years ended April
1, with the retirement of
Hugh Hartridge Grady,
assistant vice president of
Savannah’s Liberty National
Bank and Trust Company.
Grady first joined Liberty
National in 1921, as Clearing
House Clerk. At the time, the
total personnel included only
eleven employees and
officers. Since that time
Grady has be come
thoroughly familiar with
practically every phase of the
banking world - he has served
in personnel, purchasing,
operations, the foreign
department, as loan officer,
assistant trust officer, and as
manager of the first branch
bank established by Liberty
National, the Habersham
Street Branch, in 1953. Also,
he served for many years as
secretary, treasurer and
manager of the Savannah
Clearing House.
Many civic projects have
been given his dedicated
attention through the years,
but the Boy Scouts has long
been a favorite. He spent
many years on the board of
directors of the Coastal
Empire Council, and was
presented the Silver Beaver
Award in 1953. He is also
Diocesan Chairman for Boy
Scouting in the Diocese of
Savannah, a member of the
National Catholic Committee
on Scouting, and a Boy Scout
Field Commissioner.
A member of Savannah’s
Sacred Heart Parish and a
Knight of Columbus since
1923, Grady has held every
office on the local level, and
in 1960 was elected to the
highest office in the state,
that of State Deputy
In recognition of his work,
both on the parish and
Diocesan level, Grady was
honored in 1950 by Pope
Pius XII. He was made a
papal knight and invested as a
Knight of St. Gregory, the
Great.
For thirty-two years he
has acted as producer,
director and announcer of the
Savannah Catholic Radio
Program, heard each Sunday
morning over a local radio
station. This is the oldest
Catholic radio program in the
United States conducted
exclusively by laymen.
Grady is a past president
of the Catholic Layman’s
Association of Georgia, past
president of the Catholic
Community Center, past
general chairman of the St.
Patrick’s Day Parade
Committee (of which he has
served as Grand Marshal), and
is a member of the Hibernian
Society of Savannah and
chairman of the Chatham
Savannah Health Council.
Time has brought many
changes to banking since
Grady’s days as Clearing
House Clerk, and with such
modern marvels as the proof
machine, the Xerox copier,
computers and overall
automation, he foresees an
even greater era of service and
efficiency in this important
field.
Hugh Grady is married to
the former Laura Duggan.
They have four children, the
oldest of whom is a nun now
teaching in Chicago. Two
daughters are married with
families of their own, while
Hugh, Jr., is a student at
Fordham University now
spending his junior year at
the Sorbonne in Paris. Grady
now looks forward to
devoting many happy leisure
hours to such pursuits as
painting and reading, two of
his favorite activities which
have had to be neglected in
deference to service to his
bank, his church, and his
community.
RETIRES - Hugh H. Grady (r) receives best wishes from George
E. Patterson, President of Savannah’s Liberty National Bank and
Trust Company, on Grady’s retirement after 47 years with the
Bank. Photo was taken at a retirement party last Thursday.
Grady’s retirement was effective on April 1st. (Staff photo by
