ATTENTION
SAVANNAH DEANERY
MEMBERS. Don’t forget that
April 21 is the date of your
spring Deanery meeting in St.
Anthony’s parish hall,
preceded at 4 P.M. with
Benediction in the Church.
Stella Schneider, Deanery
President, has extended the
deadline for reservations for a
chartered bus to the
convention until this meeting.
Those of you who may have
overlooked sending in your
$10 reservation fee may take
care of this at the meeting.

Want to meet some
interesting women? Then
check the April issue of
WORD magazine for pictures
and sketches of three
members of the staff of
NCCW - Mig Boyle, editor of
WORD; Barbara Brunton,
program director of Church
Communities Commission;
and Mary Donohue, director
of Organization Services
Commission.
* * *
Another person you would
enjoy meeting in the pages of
WORD is Catherine Berry,
whose article, “Society and
the Single Woman”, gives her
own experience as a single
woman in a marriage-centered
society.
An editorial assistant with
an ecumenical magazine, Miss
Berry is also doing graduate
work in religion. Of this she
writes, “Useful work is very
much a necessary part of my
life and the combination of
using English skills and
religious interests provides a
sense of accomplishment for
me.”
Musing on why she hasn’t
married, Miss Berry said,
“Maybe I’m afraid that I
would be ‘limited’ if I were to
marry. I like the flexibility of
my present life. I can and do
spend many hours with those
who have no one who cares
for them - or who seems to
care for them. I seek to say to
each person with whom I
come in contact, ‘You mean
something to me.’
“I suppose this is my own
small contribution to end the
alienation and aloneness
which is eating at so many
today. It is my contribution
to unity, to the eventual
brotherhood of man, to the
communications problem
which lies at the root of any
authentic communitarian
asceticism.”

The “Affiliates’ Affairs”
section of this issue carries an
article on a luncheon at the
White House attended by our
national President, Mrs. John
D. Shields. She was one of 50
guests of Mrs. Lyndon B.
Johnson at the second in a
series of luncheons for
Women Doers.
The President in a brief
appearance urged the women
to support the package of
consumer legislation he sent
to Congress in early
February. (Note: One portion
of this legislation, the
Truth-in-Lending Bill, was
covered in DCCW Notes in
March.)

Johnson’s dramatic
announcement pertaining to
his withdrawal from the
presidential race this year,
Columbus’ St. Anne’s CYO

this facet and several other
questions. Questions asked
and results were as follows:
Who would you like to see
elected president?
Robt. Kennedy - 14 votes;
Eugene McCarthy - 3 votes;
Pres. Johnson - 4 votes; Geo.
Wallace - 1 vote; and 2 were
undecided.
Should the U. S. withdraw
from Viet Nam?
4 - yes; 20 No
Should capital punishment
be abolished?
10 Yes; 14 No
Are you in favor of all
business establishments being
allowed to remain open on
Sunday?
9 Yes; 15 No
Should the Federal
Government continue its
current welfare program?
MRS. PALMER
Should the Federal

It is interesting to note
that the group polled
consisted of 8 Catholic Hi

group heavily favored a dove
for president, it was quite
evident that they wanted to
stand firm in our
commitment in Viet Nam.
