VARIETY SHOW. The
Savannah Deanery is hosting
the annual Diocesan
Convention next April, and in
order to finance this project,
Savannah Deanery President
Stella Schneider announces
that the Deanery will again
present a holiday variety
show featuring talent from
the local parochial schools.
The variety show will be held
at Blessed Sacrament School
Auditorium on Friday,
December 13, at 8:00 P.M.
Tickets can be purchased
from your own parish council
president. Even if your
children aren’t going to
perform, why not take them
to see the show? They’d
probably enjoy watching
their contemporaries “in the
limelight”.

BISHOP’S PASTORAL. By
now, you all should have at
least one copy of the
American Bishop’s Pastoral
Letter “Human Life in Our
Day”. The complete text
appeared in last week’s
Southern Cross and also in
Our Sunday Visitor this
week, and a condensed
version was published in
Sunday’s National Register.
Bishop Gerard L. Frey,
speaking to the St. James
(Savannah) Home and School
Association recently, urged
everyone to read the Pastoral
Letter, study it, and use it as
the basis for discussion.

THE BEAUTIFUL
PEOPLE. Recently, Our
Sunday Visitor carried an
article by Fr Leo M.
Croghan dealing with The
Beautiful People. It presented
some thoughts which seem
worth repeating during this
Advent season, when the
materialistic so often prevails
over the spiritual. Fr.
Croghan said, ‘There is a
difference between ‘The
Beautiful People’ and ‘a
beautiful person’. Becoming
‘a beautiful person’ is, I
think, the main object of our
personal piety. But belonging
to ‘The Beautiful People’ is
an unimportant and unreal
wish.”
Fr. Croghan defines “the
Beautiful People” as “the
rich, handsome, successful
people who live--at least as we
imagine them--in the dream
world of luxury and
glamour.” He quotes St.
Peter’s first Epistle (3,3) to
persuade us that we become
holy by becoming beautiful
persons. It reads:
“Let not your first concern
be with the outward
adornment and braiding of
hair and the decoration of
gold and wearing of robes but
let your first concern be the
hidden person of the heart
with the imperishable jewel
of a quiet and gentle spirit
which in God’s sight is very
precious.”
The advice which Fr.
Croghan gives us to help us
become oeautiful persons is
an up-dated version of the
Beatitudes written in the
language of our times by the
Anglican scholar, J. B.
Priestly: “Happy are they
who bear their share of the
poverty: they have already
entered the Kingdom of
Reality . .. Happy are they
who bear their share of the
world’s pain: in the long run
they will know more
happiness than those who
avoid it... Happy are those
who accept life and their own
limitations: they will find
more in life than
anybody . .. Happy are those
who long to be truly ‘good’:
they will fully realize their
ambition ... Happy are those
who are ready to make
allowances and to forgive:
they will know the love of
God ... Happy are those
who are real in their thoughts
and feelings: in the end they
will see the ultimate Reality,
God . .. Happy are those
who help others to live
together: they will be known
to be doing God’s work.”

How Do MPAA Ratings
Compare With NCOMP’S?

NEW YORK (CPF) -
Catholic film-goers now have
two sets of film ratings they
can consult-those of the
National Catholic Office for
Motion Pictures, and those of
the Motion Picture
Association of America-and
the first available comparison
shows that the MPAA and
NCOMP see films pretty
much the same way.
Thirty films have been
rated by both the MPAA and
NCOMP since the
movie-industry rating plan
went into effect November 1,
and of these 30, 23 received
similar classifications from
both NCOMP and the MPAA.
On four other films, NCOMP
was more severe than was the
MPAA, and on three other
films, NCOMP was more
lenient than the MPAA.
Among the 30 films rated
by both the MPAA and
NCOMP, four were
condemned by the Catholic
film office, and all four
received either an “R” or an
“X” rating from the MPAA.
“R” stands for “Restricted,”
meaning persons under 16 are
not admitted unless
accompanied by a parent or
adult guardian. “X” means no
one under 16 is admitted at
all. (In some states, the age
limit is 17 or even 18.)
The four “C” films are
“The Girl on a Motorcycle,”
which received an MPAA
“X.” It is a film about a
nymphomaniac, which was
condemned because it is
“sexually explicit;” “Birds in
Peru,” condemned for being
“graphically suggestive,” also
received an “X;” “The
Magus,” condemned for “the
explicit treatment of several
sexual sequences,” got an
“R,” as did “The Fox,” a
film about lesbianism. It was
released prior to the Nov. 1
starting date for MPAA
ratings but was included
anyway.
Four of the 30 films
received a “B” or “morally
objectionable in part for all”
rating from NCOMP, and of
those 4. 3 were given an “R”
rating by the MPAA, and one
was rated “M,” which means
“suggested for mature
aduiences; parental discretion
advised.”
The “M” went to
“Impasse,” which NCOMP
“B’d” because of “derogatory
racial implications, excessive
brutality and suggestive
sequences,” The “R” films,
along with NCOMP
objections, were: “The
Touchables” (“a titillating
male sexual fantasy”),
“Joanna” ("visuals immerse
viewers in a promiscuous and
degenerate life”) and “Lady
in Cement,” a Frank Sinatra
detective film objected to by
NCOMP for “vulgar and
obscene dialogue, nudity and
indecent treatment.”
The MPAA put 9 of the 30
films into its “G” or
“suggested for general
audiences” category and
found NCOMP in general
agreement, the Catholic Film
Office rating those films
either A-l (“morally
unobjectionable for general
patronage”) or A-2 (“morally
unobjectionable for adults
and adolescents”). Unlike
NCOMP, the MPAA has no
rating that distinguishes an
adolescent audience from a
Eatings Chart
MPAA.

SAVANNAH DECORATION AWARD
Keep Christ In Christmas
J. J. Kilpatrick, Grand
Knight of Savannah’s Holy
Family Council No. 5588,
Knights of Columbus and
Mrs. Louis O. Crovatt,
President of the Garden Club
Council of Chatham County
announced that the two
organizations will again
sponsor, “KEEP CHRIST IN
CHRISTMAS AWARD” this
year. This award, a plaque
given to the outstanding
outdoor religious decoration
as judged by the Garden Club
Council of Chatham County.
There will be an additional
“First Runner Up” award this
year.
The purpose for this Third
Annual “KEEP CHRIST IN
CHRISTMAS AWARD” is to
promote more religious
Christmas decorations as a
reminder of the real meaning
for celebrating Christmas,
“The Birth of Christ”.
Seemingly the true meaning is
lost in the commercial rush of
the season.
Any residental religious
decoration in keeping with
the theme of the Birth of
Christ, that is fully visible
from the outside will be
eligible for entry, as long as
the entry lives in Chatham
County. If any person who
does not live in an area that is
annually judged by a Garden
Club may receive entry
blanks from Holy Family
Council No. 5588, Knights of
Columbus, 7619 Waters Road
or Mrs. J. B. Nasworthy of
the Garden Club Council of
Chatham County. Deadline
for entry is Monday,
December 23rd, 1968. Final
judging will take place on the
evenings of December 26th
and 27th.
The Garden Club Council
of Chatham County will also
sponsor the regular awards
for Door, Window, and
Overall in addition to the
“KEEP CHRIST IN
CHRISTMAS AWARD”.
Prizes for the usual Garden
Club Council Awards are
donated annually by
Savannah Electric and Power
Company.
Co-chairman for the
“KEEP CHRIST IN
CHRISTMAS AWARD” is
Eugene G. Brickner, Holy
Family Council, Knights of
Columbus and Mrs. J. B.
Nasworthy, Sr., Garden Club
Council of Chatham County.
general audience; there is no
rating between the MPAA’s
“G” for general audiences
and “M” for mature
audiences. Interestingly, the
old Legion of Decency went
25 years before creating a
separate rating for
adolescents.
The 9 “G” films and their
NCOMP ratings are: “An
Angel in My Pocket” (A-l);
“Backtrack’’ (A-2);
“Hellfighters” (A-2); “The
Horse in the Gray Flannel
Suit” (A-l); “Kenner” (A-2);
“The Marriage Came
Tumbling Down” (A-2); “The
Shoes of the Fisherman”
(A-l); “Submarine X-l”
(A-l), and “Yellow
Submarine” (A-l).
NCOMP had a different
opinion on four other “G”
films, deciding they belonged
in the A-3 or “morally
unobjectionable for adults”
category. These five are:
“The Great Catherine,”
“House of Cards,” “The
Impossible Years,” and “Les
Gauloises Bleues.”
But on three other films,
NCOMP was more lenient
than the MPAA.
“Corruption” got an “R”
(Restricted) rating from the
MPAA but only an adult A-3
from NCOMP. The same was
true for “The Princess.” And
“Strategy of Terror” got an
“M” (for mature audiences)
from the MPAA while
NCOMP gave it an A-l.
Six films received an “M”
from the MPAA and an
equivalent A-3 from NCOMP:
“Better a Widow,” “Buona
Sera, Mrs. Campbell,”
“Decline and Fall of a Bird
Watcher,” “The Fixer,”
“More Dead Than Alive,” and
“The Trygon Factor.”
