SUMMER BOARD MEETING
DCCW Gives Abortion
Fight Top Priority
By Marianna Richardson
In response to a plea from
Father Lucree that the
Savannah Diocesan Council
of Catholic Women DO
something about the fight
against abortion, a resolution
was unanimously passed by
the Board members at the
Summer Board of Qrectors
Meeting in Macon, July 1.
The resolution read: For the
1971-72 year, top priority
will be given to fight
legislation favoring abortion
and the amount of one
thousand dollars will be
allocated for the purpose of
supporting a program already
begun by the Bishop or a
designated by the DCCW.
The resolution came after
much discussion, which
originally triggered by a
lengthy and informative
report given to the Board
nembers by Mrs. Eugene
Smith, who attended the
National Right to Life
Convention in St. Paul,
Minnesota, June 11-13. Mrs.
Smith was sent to the
Meeting as the representative
of the Savannah Diocese and
the DCCW. After giving her
report, she urged that we all
begin the fight now rather
than waiting until the
Legislature convenes again.
Following Mrs. Smith’s
reports came the reports and
plans of the Deanery
Presidents. Savannah Deanery
president, Mrs. L.H.
Bazemore emphasized the
importance of WORD
magazine for all DCCW
members and said that the
Savannah Deanery already
has several prayer groups in
action, in conjuction with the
National Church
Communities program for the
coming year, LET US PRAY.
Mrs. Vance Logan, Jr.,
Augusta Deanery president,
announced that Augusta was
going to go “gung ho” to
fight abortion legislation. The
Family Affairs commission is
in the process of forming a
BIRTHRIGHT group, a
telephone counseling service
for women with unwanted
pregnancies. The
Organization Services
Commission is going to
sponsor a Leadership Training
Program for Officers and
Commission Chairmen on the
Parish level in August.

GLENMARY SECRETARY
Fr. Steinbacher
Assumes Duties
The Reverend Wilfred
Steinbacher, a member of the
Cincinnati based Glenmary
Home Missioner has begun his
new assignment this summer
as Society Secretary of the
Glenmary Home Missioners.
Farther Steinbacher, a native
of Williamsport,
Pennsylvania, and a member
of St. Lawrence Parish, has
been a Glenmarian Priest
since 1962, and is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Aaron
Steinbacher of West Southern
Avenue in South
Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
The Glenmary Home
Missioners, headquartered in
Cincinnati, is the Catholic
Home Mission Society that
serves in small towns and
rural areas.
Father Steinbacher, 36,
received his schooling at St.
Joseph’s Parish in
Williamsport, Pennsylvania,
St. Charles College in
Catonsville, Maryland and
advanced education at Mt. St.
Mary’s in Cincinnati, Ohio,
Catholic University in
Washington, D.C. and Loyola
University in Chicago,
Illinois. His previous
Glenmary assignments
include Assistant Pastor at St.
Christopher’s Church in
Claxton, Georgia
(1963-1965), where he also
served as the Chaplain at the
Georgia State Prison in
Reidsville, Georgia. Since
1968 he has been Director of
the “Special Year” Program
at the G lenmary
headquarters. In this
program, seminarians prior to
to ordination spend a year in
self study and self evaluation
prior to ordination to the
Priesthood. Father
Steinbacher will continue in
this previous capacity in
addition to his duties as
Society Secretary wherein he
will assist Glenmary’s
recently elected President,
Father Charles Hughes, in the
day-to-day administrative
duties of the Glenmary
Society.
president, Mrs. Jean Iniquez,
said that the Deanery and all
its affiliates were saving
bonus coupons and Berry
Crocker points for the Queen
of Peace Mission at Lakeland,
Georgia.
The presidents of the
Columbus, Albany, and
Macon Deaneries said that
their plans would be
completed after their Board
meetings in August.
The five Commission
Chairmen outlined their
programs briefly and Mrs. J.
Harry Persse, Savannah
DCCW President, asked that
all the Diocesan Chairmen get
their Fall plans to the
Deanery Chairmen by August
1, so they will be available
when the Deaneries have the
summer Board meetings.
Mrs. Cyganieweicz, DCCW
Parliamentarian and Girl
Liason for the DCCW,
suggested that the By-Laws
need revising, as the goals and
purposes have taken on added
dimensions since the last
rewriting of the Consititution
and By-Laws. A committee
will be appointed to study
the existing Constitution and
to recommend changes before
the Winter Board meeting in
February. She also mentioned
that Girl Scouting has
declined nationally in the
past few years and urged
Councils to support Girl
Scouting.
In an address to the Board
members, Mgsr. Bourke noted
that we live in a phony age:
there is so much verbiage and
so little action. People mouth
the words “commitment,”
“fulfillment,” “concept of
life” and others without any
idea of what they are talking
about. He expressed his
approval of the DCCW
resolution to monetarily
support the fight against
abortion.
After the 1971-72 Budget
was read and approved, the
meeting was adjourned.
