AS ARMY CHAPLAIN
Father O’Connell Returns
BY PAULINE CHEESBOROUGH
Chaplain (Capt.) David A. O’Connell of
Cork City, Ireland, was assigned as
Catholic chaplain of the 2nd Battalion,
School Brigade, Southeastern Signal
School in Augusta on March 19. He came
to Ft. Gordon after nine weeks at the
Army Chaplains School at Ft. Hamilton,
N.Y.
Returing to Savannah, O’Connell
served at St. Benedict’s Parish, and also
taught religion at St. Pius X High School
there. He also did pastoral work at St.
Teresa Parish in Albany, Ga.
paperwork. I expected that, though. At
Army Chaplains School they taught
admistrative procedures as well as courses
on leadership, counselling, and methods
of handling troops.
Asked if he found any great difference
between being a civilian priest and an
Army chaplain, O’Connel replied:
Before enlisting in the Army in
January, he had served as resident
chaplain at St. Joseph’s Hospital, and at
St. Mary’s-on-the-Hill Parish, both in
Augusta. When asked how he liked
living here, he said he enjoyed it very
much; that he found the people of
Augusta “warm and friendly.”
“Army procedures are quite different.
There are more rules and regulations to
adhere to and much, much more
Why did he choose to leave Ireland and
come to America?
BLESSED SACRAMENT SCHOOL Art Exhibit was held Sunday, May 28th. Pictured with Msgr. McDonald and their art teacher,
Mrs. William Gaudry, Jr., are the students with their award winning pictures. Top section, (1. to r.) Allyson Blue, Ann Pickney, Mrs.
Gaudry, Msgr. McDonald, Pat Lentz, Harry DeLorne, Tommy Shawe, Pat Robertson, and Leonard Krauss. Lower section, (I. to r.)
Jude Matthews, Carmel Price, Margaret Howard, Sarah Russo, George Crawford, and Margie Pinckney.
“Bishop Thomas J. McDonough of the
Diocese of Savannah, Ga., came to
Ireland, and he spoke of the shortage of
Catholic priests there. I felt there was a
need, and decided that this was what I
must do,” Father O’Connell said.
What influenced him to become a
priest?
“My contact with priests at school
played an important part. By the time I
was graduated from Presentation College
in Cork City I had already made up my
mind. I studied for the priesthood at St.
John’s Seminary in Waterford, Ireland for
six years, and was ordained there.”
“Too, I work with more young people*^*
in the Army; men from 17 to 22 years
old. Counselling is a good party of my
work here, listening to the soldiers’
problems and giving counsel and guidance
where indicated,” he said.
X
The chaplain went on to say that many
young soldiers have difficulty in adjusting
from civilian to military life:
“Away from home for the first time in
an entirely different environment and a
more disciplined way of life than he’s
been accustomed to, it is probably the
greatest and most difficult adjustment he
has ever had to make in his life. He
becomes confused and needs to talk to
somebody.
“Many times,” he continued, “just in
verbalizing his problem he gets a truer
persepctive -- and the solution comes
from within himself.” ^
Father O’Connell’s doors are always
open to soldiers of all faiths for
counselling.
“I work with as many Protestants as I
do Catholics - perhaps more, because of
the greater proportion of Protestants
here.”
The young chaplain’s parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Timothy O’Connell of Lackandarra
Western Road, Cork City, visited with
him in New York City for a few days
before he came to his assignment at Ft.
Gordon. The chaplain also has an older
brother and sister living in Cork City.
BLESSED SACRAMENT SCHOOL Commencement exercises were held Tuesday, May 30th. Pictured above are the 67 graduates
with their teachers, Mrs. Betty McCloy and Mrs. Ruth Connors. Also in the photo are Msgr. Andrew McDonald, Fr.Liam
O’Sullivan, Fr. John Hurley, and Sister Mary Aurelia.
KINDERGARTEN GRADUATION EXERCISES at St. Mary’s on the Hill School, Augusta, were held recently. With the graduates
are their teachers, Mrs. Rachels and Mrs. Daly.

70 CHILDREN ATTEND SUMMER BIBLE SCHOOL - Jenkins County High School in Millen, Georgia was the site of a Vacation
Bible School for 70 children from Catholic parishes in 9 surrounding towns. Sponsored by St. Bernadette, Holy Trinity, Swainsboro
and Sacred Heart, Waynesboro, the Bible School extended from June 5th thru June 9th and was based on the theme: Who Are My
Neighbors? Sister Jane Marie from Waynesboro was the religious education coordinator for the program which included 8 teachers
and 8 aides who guided the children through two classes, a recreation period and an arts and crafts period each day. The daily
worship services were conducted in St. Bernadette Church by Rev. Larry Goulding, Rev. Thomas McCarthy and Rev. Edward
Gorny. Mr. A.D. Clifton, Superintendent of Schools in Jenkins County allowed the group the use of 8 classrooms. Millen was
chosen because it is centrally located in relation to Sylvania, Metter, Twin City, Swainsboro, Louisville, Wrens, Waynesboro, and
Sardis.
