Pacelli Home
School Ass’n
Hears Plans
BY AL EVERSMAN +
The Pacelli Home and School
Association (Columbus) held its initial
meeting of the new school year October
5th. President Dr. William S. Odom
presided.
Other officers are Mr. Emmett Tice,
Vice President; Mrs. Mady Chrismond,
Secretary; and Mrs. Caroline Blackford,
treasurer.
Pacelli Principal, Father Robert
Mattingly, introduced the members of the
faculty and gave a rundown on the goals
of the diocesan school, which has an
enrollment of 293 students compared to
267 last year. The ratio of Catholic to
Non-Catholic is 5 to 1, and white to black
6 to 1.
Father Mattingly announced that on
October 24th N.E.D.T. tests will be held
for grades 9 and 10; P.S.A.T. tests for
grade 11, and Army Aptitude tests for
Grade 12. On October 26th Pacelli
Seniors are invited to attend College
Program Day for high school students at
Columbus College.
Bishop Gerard Frey of the Diocese of
Savannah will come to Pacelli beginning
October 16th for a “Live In” which will
find him visiting Catholic people and
facilities of Columbus. Student
Council election results were announced
as follows: President, Mike Gilbert; Vice
President, Mike Shannon; Secretary,
Maureen Brown; and Treasurer, Joe
Lunsford.
Program Chairman, Emmett Tice,
stated that the Home and School
Association had pledged a total of $8,000
toward the benefit of the school, and
approximately $2,000 had already been
raised by Chairman, Leonard Wieczorek
and his committee at the Labor Day
bar-b-cue.
Mr. Tice then introduced School
Board President, Mr. Tom French, who
noted that 12 years ago “Msgr. Herman
Deimel literally built Pacelli High
School,” got it accredited, and watched it
grow and prosper until the crisis in 1969,
which effected many parochial schools
due to the shortage of teaching religious.
Since then a lot of effort by both the
parents and the school board revived a
tremendous spirit and desire to keep the
school open. 1970, 71, and 72 have
produced good years. Future thrust
depends upon our taking advantage of
opportunities and keeping this spirit alive.
Mr. French also alluded to a group
known as HELP HOW EVERYONE
LOVES PACELLI; this organization
works to spark scholarship aid to those
who would like to attend Pacelli but can’t
afford to do so.
The Pacelli Cheer Leaders presented a
program demonstrating techniques in
cheering, chanting, and singing. The
program concluded with everyone singing
the Alma Mater.
MACON
6 Thrust’ Series
At St. Joseph’s
Overflow crowds attended the first
week’s discussion of THRUST ’72 at St.
Joseph’s, Macon. A room that ordinarily
accommodates 40 people held 55 for the
Wednesday evening session and another
60 for the Thursday morning session. The
topic “Blessed Are the ...”, dealing with
the pursuit of happiness was discussed,
with Father William Coleman, pastor,
first giving the lecture then answering
questions.
The education committee of the Parish
Council, feeling that this year’s program
was admirably suited to an interfaith
project, had made an effort to invite
interested persons in other churches of
the community. Mrs. Bernard Thomas
was in charge of special mailings to
announce the series and the response was
most gratifying.
Nursery facilities were opened for the
Thursday morning session and coffee was
served at both sessions. This was the first
time that nursery facilities had been
offered for something other than Sunday
Mass at St. Joseph’s, and sixteen children
were cared for during the hour-and-a-half
program.
THRUST will continue twice weekly
at St. Joseph’s Center for four more
weeks probing the topics, “By the Sweat
of Your Brow,” “Thou Shalt Not...”
“The Children of God,” and “One Nation
Under God.”

ST. TERESA OF AVILA
Augusta Parish Education
Programs Are Accredited
By Gillian Brown
PAGE 7 — The Southern Cross, October 12,1972
DCCW Notes
St. Teresa of AvM Parish, in Augusta,
has received it accreditation following a
year of evaluation and self-study of its
educational programs. The period of
self-analysis enabled the parish to put a
search-light on its present position and to
come up with a set of specific goals for
the future.
The Department of Christian
Formation staff, in. making their
accreditation report, paid special tribute
to all those working in the area of parish
renewal in St. Teresa’s, and praised the
religious education leaders as being
“well-organized and sincerely dedicated
to the development of a first rate
program.”
Their report extended a number of
commendations, to the self-study
committee itself, to the parish council,
the teachers and administrative staff, the
Religious Education Board and the
Coordinators, for their efforts in setting
up effective programming. The pastor,
Msgr. Felix Donnelly, was commended
for remedying two of the most apparent
difficulties of the program, the lack of
office space and the lack of adequate
classroom facilities. He and members of
the board were praised for their decision
to set aside two teachers specially for
adult programs, one to work with parents
and one for the general task of adult
education.
The Report made several specific
recommendations, aimed at improving
the overall effectiveness of educational
programs in the parish. Among these were
the following:
That the Parish Council work on the
parish self-study recommended by the
Diocesan Pastoral Council for all parishes
as a means of establishing its priorities in
all areas of parish life;
That the Board set down in writing its
goals of service to the parish, together
with specific objectives which would
achieve these goals;
That the parish consider paying its
religion teachers, as a means of showing
appreciation for their work and support
for the religious education program;
That the Board devise a publicity
program to help the whole parish feel
pride and involvement in the work of
religious education;
That the Board consider hiring a
Coordinator to work with other parishes
especially in the area of teacher training;
That continued interest be shown in
providing creative and imaginative
liturgical experiences for children and
adults in the parish.
The Report concluded with praise of
all working at St. Teresa’s “in a variety of
ways for the upbuilding of the
community of faith.”

“THINGS GET CURIOUSER
AND CURIOUSER”
(Alice in Wonderland)
At a time when Capital punishment has
been outlawed by the Supreme Court;
and when people are protesting war, it is
not curious that the pro-abortion forces
are working harder and succeeding in
many instances in providing abortion on
demand services for all who wish them. At
a time when childless couples are begging
to adopt babies, is it not curious that due
to the increased availability of abortion
their chance of obtaining a child is being
diminished almost to zero? At a time
when those favoring abortion insist that
the unplanned child is an unwanted child,
is it not also curious that they fail to take
into account the children, over the years
who have been unplanned but deeply
loved by their parents real or adoptive?
And, at a time when the United States is
stressing the human dignity of every
man by trying to eliminate ill health,
poverty, racism and illiteracy, is it not
curious indeed that the civil rights of the
unborn child are not also respected?
Perhaps all this proves that man is
trying to be the “ugly duckling” of God’s
creation. Perhaps it points out too that he
is failing to realize that God made him in
His own Image and Likeness, and gave
him the Power to overcome his tendency
to weakness and sin. This Power is Our
Lord Jesus Christ. The hour is late but
not too late to stand up and be counted.
It is imperative to speak out against these
CURIOUS things that are happening!!!
Mr. F.D. Foley wrote a letter to the
Editor of the Wall Street Journal in which
he said, “You may be correct in assuming
that the majority of Americans hold a
pro-abortion position but I think many
would alter their opinion if the abortions
were VISUALIZED rather than
considered in the abstract.” To deny that
a human form with integrated circulatory
and respiratory activity is alive seems
incredible particularly when we require
the absence of these spontaneous vital
functions to make an accurate diagnosis
of death. Your position might be less
ambigious as a direct rather than a distant
observer.”
The Right to Life and Birthright Inc.
must continue to work with increased
vigor if they are to offer forceful
resistance to the pro-abortionists. Surely,
things are getting “curiouser and
curiouser”!!
VETO THE NEW ETHIC!
Recently, Supreme Court Justice Lewis
F. Powell, Jr. told the American Bar
Association that “destructive self
criticism and a decline of sexual morality
are real threats to American institutions.”
In condemming the new ethic he said,
“the overriding concern not merely of
youth but of large segments of our ^people
often seems to be a highly individualized
self interest - everyone wants to do his
own thing.” In asserting self one seeks
“to be independent if not indeed to reject
the disciplines of home, school, church
and community.” It is said that “religion
is irrelevant, our democracy is a sham, the
free enterprise system has failed, that our
system of criminal justice is repressive.
Today one’s chief allegiance is to his own
conscience and to his own desires. We see
signs of this in excessively tolerant trends
towards personal conduct, sexual
morality, use of drugs and disobedience
of laws believed by the individual to be
unjust.”
These strong views were expressed with
great sincerity by a leader who is in a
position to know what is happening in
our nation. Undoubtedly, the question
which needs to be asked is not “Who am
I?” but “Whose am I?” If you have any
doubt the answer appears in John 14-6.
GOOD NEWS!
ON HEARING AND SEEING!
Augusta’s Right to Life group,
determined to point out its anti-abortion
stand, has formed a speakers bureau.
During 1972-73 civic clubs and church
groups are being asked to have a program
with slides or films. Mrs. Vance Logan, Jr.
is chairman of the Local Right to Life
group.
RIGHT TO LIFE
An amendment to the Constitution has
been prepared (House Joint Resolution
1186) by Congressman John
Schmitz of California which states “No
state shall deprive any individual from the
moment he is conceived of life, liberty or
property without due process of law.” Be
sure to write your congressman and urge
him to give his enthusiastic support to
this legislation.
