Bishop, Knights of Columbus Head
Deplore Episode on “Maude” Show
BY NC NEWS SERVICE
A California bishop and the head of
the Knights of Columbus have deplored
a two-part episode of the CBS—TV
program “Maude” that dealt with
abortion and vasectomy.
Bishop Hugh A. Ebnohoe of Fresno,
Calif., in a letter to Columbia
Broadcasting System President Frank
Stanton, said the episode “was a very
brazen treatment of abortion and
vasectomy” and “openly downgraded
the belief that there is a moral value in
matters of this kind.”
John W. McDevitt, supreme knight of
the Catholic fraternal organization, said
in a letter to CBS that the episode
showed a “shocking irresponsibility” on
the part of the comedy show’s authors,
producers, telecasters and sponsors
A spokesman for CBS—TV said there
would be no public response to
criticisms of the episode, broadcast on
Nov. 14 and 21. Instead, she said, letters
would be sent to those contacting CBS
about the show.
The spokesman said the first part of
the episode, entitled “Maude’s
Dilemma,” showed the 47-year-old
Maude discovering she was pregnant and
wondering what to do. Also in the first
part of the show, said the spokesman,
Maude’s husband, Walter, is considering
getting a vasectomy as a result of his
wife’s pregnancy.
In the second part of the episode,
according to the spokesman, Walter
decides against the operation while it is
implied that Maude will obtain the
abortion.
Veteran actors Beatrice Arthur and
Bill Macy play the central characters of
the program, telecast Tuesday at 8 p.m.
(EST).
In his letter, Bishop Donohoe
declared:
Holiday Hippadrome
Holy Family Council no. 5588 Knights of Columbus is sponsoring it’s fourth annual
Holiday Hippadrome, to be held December 4th at The Benedictine Cafetorium.
The first show will start at 6:00 P.M. and the second show will start at 8:00 P.M. This
indoor circus has always been entertaining for adults as well as children. Tickets can be
obtained from any member of Holy Family Council or can be purchased at the door.
Admission is $1.25 per person.
Sacred Heart CC W
Sacred Heart Council of Catholic Women will meet on Monday, December 4th at 8
P.M. in the Rectory. The Speaker will be Sister Mary Catherine who will talk about the
work of the Social Apostolate. The annual Christmas Party will be held at which a
fruit cake will be given away. All ladies of the Parish are cordially invited to attend.
Each person is asked to bring a layette gift for the Madonna Plan.'
“The program was a very brazen
treatment of abortion and vasectomy. It
was even more reprehensible since it was
shown at 8 p.m., a time when many
young people and children were viewing
television.”
The prelate’s letter also stated:
“Under the guise of a ‘family
program’, the program openly
downgraded the belief that there is a
moral value in matters of this kind.
“While we cannot compel others to
believe as we do, we do have the right to
demand that our beliefs are not
ridiculed as was done on that program.”
The bishop said he was urging the
people of his diocese to join his protest
“and to alert the stations and
commercial sponsors involved of our
indignation.”
In his letter, McDevitt declared:
“Killing of the unborn is not a
laughing matter. All the cliche counsel
on how easy and simple it is to kill the
unborn - ‘Like having the dentist
extract a bad tooth’ -- is not funny
either. Should the advocates of
permissive abortion desire to dispense
their inducements to barbarity, they
should not be given the medium of a
popular television program at a prime
children’s viewing hour.”
His correspondence also asserted:
“While controversial subjects can be
aired, responsibility to the public
requires a format whereby both sides of
the issue will be given a fair hearing at
the same time. That responsibility was
not evidenced in the ‘Maude’ tragedy.
Rather what was in evidence was a
shocking irresponsibility by the authors,
producers, telecasters and sponsors of
the program.”
The CBS—TV spokesman
acknowledged the network had received
criticisms of the “Maude” episode. “But -
we also received calls congratulating us
for the show, not just complaints,” she
said.
‘WARRIOR’ FOR CHRIST -- Evangelist Billy Graham wears the
garb and carries a spear of a Naga warrior during his crusade in
the northeast Indian state of Nagaland. Mr. Graham said he
would be a warrior for Christ. The crusade was held as part of
the centennial year of the Christian church in Nagaland, which
has a high proportion of Baptist among its population. The
Indian government’s permission to hold the crusade was
considered significant because Americans have rarely been
granted permission to visit the insurgency-ridden state. (R.N.S.

B. C. Receives
Rifle Trophy
Annually, in the spring of the year,
Third United States Army, consisting of
the seven southeastern states and Puerto
Rico, conducts competition to
determine the champion smallbore rifle
teams in both the Junior and Senior
Division ROTC Schools in the Army
area. Last April, Benedictine Military
School of Savannah, Georgia finished in
first place among the 105 teams entered
in the Junior ROTC Division.
In addition, although not competing
with the teams in the Senior Division,
Benedictine’s point total was higher
than those of twenty-one of the
twenty-two teams entered in the College
Level matches. They outscored such
teams as The Citadel, Clemson, the
University of Florida and other top-level
teams.
Team members participating in last
year’s match were Cadets Glynn
Donoho, Craig Harper, William Pappas,
Charles Williams and Alfonso Woods.
Cadet William Pappas was high scorer
for the team. The team was, and is,
coached by First Sergeant Robert E.
Victory, USA Retired, who is a member
of the ROTC Instructor Group assigned
to the school.
The rifle team at Benedictine is an
extra-curricular activity and the cadets
devote many hours of their free time to
practice firing in order to improve their
skills. The team provides the
participants an opportunity most of
them would otherwise not have to
participate in a varsity sport.
On Wednesday, Nov. 15th, Colonel
J.E. Echols, Jr. the Deputy Chief of
Staff, ROTC, Third US Army
Headquarters, was present at
Benedictine to award the trophy
symbolic of the championship. The
presentation took place at a ceremony
on the drill field at Benedictine.
