ECUMENICAL MARRIAGE CEREMONY. Dr. John Evangelist parish, Valdosta, administer Holy
H. Curtis (1.) an ordained Methodist Minister, and Communion to Michael Anthony Roman, Jr. and
Father Brendan Timmins, pastor of St. John the Susan Kimbell at their wedding Mass last week.
Ecumenical Wedding Rites
“East is East and West is West, and
never the twain shall meet...” Any
eighth grader can quote that line from
the immortal pen of Rudyard Kipling.
Few people, it remains, remember the
rest of the rhyme.
“But there is neither East nor West,
border, nor breed, nor birth .. .when
two strong men stand face to face,
though they come from the ends of the
earth!”
Those words were played out for real
last week when two men of the cloth,
whose religious customs are usually
poles apart, were brought together to
officiate in the same wedding ceremony
in Valdosta.
And the bride and groom weren’t the
only ones present to be joined in a unity
of mind and spirit.
Susan Kimbell and Michael Anthony
Roman Jr., were united in marriage in
an inspiring hour - long wedding mass
Thursday morning at St. John the
Evangelist Catholic Chruch. Officiating
were Father Brendon Timmins, Roman
Catholic priest, and Dr. John H. Curtis,
an ordained Methodist minister.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. George H. Kimbell of McDonough,
Ga., and the groom’s parents are Mr.
and Mrs. M.A. Roman Sr., of Holly
Springs, Miss.
While not the first service in which a
Catholic priest and a Protestant
clergyman have shared the celebration
of a wedding, it was unique in the fact
that Father Timmins and Dr. Curtis
simultaneously served the sacrament of
Holy Communion to the bride and
groom.
“This service symbolizes a new spirit
in the ecumenical movement as it is
developing in the South,” said Dr.
Curtis.
And Father Timmins added: “As far
as we know, it’s the first service of this
kind conducted in the Savannah
Catholic diocese, of which Valdosta is a
part.”
Both dressed in flowing vestments,
with matching stoles signifying a festive
occasion, the two men shared other
official acts in the ceremony.
Dr. Curtis read passages of Scripture
from Genesis in the Old Testament, and
the New Testament’s 13th Chapter of
1st Corinthians, both from The Living
Bible.
Father Timmins read from the book
of Mark and led the congregation in the
wedding mass liturgies.
“We are here to share this moment
with God,” he said, “and the covenant
made here is in the tradition of both our
churches.”
Solist Ann Swanson and Keith
Lavallier, on the guitar, provided the
music. Timmy Brown and Steve
Hitchcock served as altar boys, and, in
typical style the bridal couple was
attended by best man and a maid of
honor.
The rest of the un-typical service was
something to remember.
“This is as close to inter-communion
between the two Christian fellowships
as has yet been demonstrated in the
South,” said Dr. Curtis, as Father
Timmins, smiling, beamed his approval.

WASHINGTON (NC) - The National
Conference of Catholic Bishops has
called in a report for an exhaustive
study to determine whether women
should be ordained.
In a 1,600-word report by the
Bishops’ Committee on Pastoral
Research and Practices entitled
“Theological Reflections on the
Ordination of Women*’! the committee
noted that there exist some strong
theological and pastoral arguments
against the ordination of women.
But the report added that “neither
scriptural exegesis or theology alone can
give a clear answer to this question.”
The ultimate answer must come from
the Church’s teaching authority, the
report said. The question is whether this
authority has already given a definite
and final answer. Only the teaching
authority itself can give the ultimate
answer, the report states.
The purpose of the report is not to
give a definitive treatment of the subject
but rather “to encourage further study
and discussion.”
The question of ordaining women has
never been thoroughly researched for
Catholic theology, according to the
report. Therefore a study is required,
the report says, not because of
sociological trends but because of
developments in the Church in the past
10 years.
The report cited two arguments
against the ordination of women:
-Through the incarnation, “the Word
of God took on flesh as a male and thus
a male priest is required to act in the
person of the male Christ.
-The fact that Christ selected only
men as His apostles and disciples.
“The constant tradition and practice
of the Catholic Church against the
ordination of women, interpreted as of
divine law, is of such a nature as to
constitute a clear teaching of the
ordinary magesterium (teaching
authority) of the Church. Though not
formally defined, this is Catholic
doctrine,” the report states.
