BOMBS ROCK LONDON -- Firemen hose down cars
to prevent fire after a bomb exploded near London’s
Trafalgar Square. Another bomb exploded near Old
Bailey, the Central Criminal Court, and two more were
found and difused. The bombs, planted in
automobiles, were believed by authorities to be the
wrok of the Provisional wing of the Irish Republican
Army. Officials said the blasts had clearly been timed
to coincide with the Northern Ireland referendum,
which the IRA opposed. One man was killed by the
blasts and 243 were injured. Windows in scores of
buildings were shattered. (RNS Photo)
Ecumenism at N.Y. Parade
BY JO-ANN PRICE
NEW YORK (NC) - When the St.
Patrick’s day parade marches along
Fifth Avenue here ranking clergy from
two St. Patrick’s Cathedrals will be in
the reviewing stand to watch its
progress.
Cardinal Terence Cooke of St.
Patrick’s New York will be joined by
Dean V. G. Griffin of St. Patrick’s
Anglican Cathedral of Dublin for the
March 17 event.
The gesture is more than one of
simple ecumenical friendship at a time
when Irishmen, Catholic and Protestant,
are killing each other in civil strife.
Cardinal Cooke, Msgr. James F.
Rigney, the cathedral administrator here
and Dean Griffin are all active
ecumenists.
Dean Griffin believes St. Patrick’s
Cathedral in Dublin is really a national
cathedral which should be shared by all
Christian faiths as a “visible witness to
our unity and brotherhood in Christ.”
Although Anglicans form only five
percent of the religious community in
the Irish Republic, their
cathedral-where Jonathan Swift was
once dean - is a famous edifice.
Dublin’s Catholic community has a
pro-cathedral.
Both St. Patrick’s, New York, and St.
Patrick’s, Dublin, are being restored, but
can hardly compare in age. The
cathedral here is engaged in raising
$700,000 to $800,000 to pay for
interior renovations for its centennial in
1979.
The Dublin edifice, built on swampy
land and an underground river called the
Poddle is believed to be the site where
St. Patrick baptized converts to the
Christian faith. A church has stood
there since the 5th century, and a
cathedral since 1213. The edifice has
been a fortress, a prison, a court of law
and a university. Oliver Cromwell
stabled his horses there-and the Lady
Chapel was used by the French
Huguenots for worship from 1666 to
1816.
Dean Griffin is visiting the United
States Mar. 9 through Mar. 23 to help
raise approximately $625,000 for the
St. Patrick’s Cathedral Restoration
Fund in Dublin.
Contributions so far have included
some $2,500 from the Gaelic Athletic
Association, whose Catholic

The reports said that as a result of
dealings by an unregistered Los Angeles

the Vatican owned or had an option to

outstanding shares of Vetco Offshore

cathedral to keep alive both the Irish
tradition and ecumenism.
Dean Griffin is a member of the Irish
Joint Protestant-Roman Catholic
Committee, whose aim is “to investigate
how cooperation in social projects and
education can be furthered.”
In a brochure about the fund drive,
he wrote that St. Patrick’s, Dublin, “has
an important part to play in promoting
mutual understanding and reconciliation
between all Irishmen.
“It should be a national cathedral, he
said, because “it is the meeting place
and, indeed, has within its walls, the
ethos of both the Celtic and Anglo-Irish
traditions.”

In federal district court in
Washington, D.C., the SEC charged
Eisenberger and an investment
partnership he managed with violating
the section of the Securities and

The American Stock Exchange on

halted trading in the stock.
The SEC complaint said that

Dear Mr. Breig,
Mister Free Soul was hilarious and
true in most cases according to my
observation. Husbands like you abound.
But - if you would like to hear about
someone who has it rougher than you
have please lend an ear to my tide of
woe. I shed a few tears for you - true -
but reserve most of them for me and
mine! So, Mr. Free Soul, if you have
tears prepare to shed them now!
I am also awakened at a hideous hour
of the morning by the uproar of an
alarm clock that could shatter the
nervous system of a rhinoceros. I keep
the alarm clock in my bedroom so my
two sisters can’t hear the diabolical
thing because they have both been very
ill recently.
I do not set the thermostat because
we do not have steam heat. Instead we
have 9 gas heaters, 3 of which I do not
light unless it is extremely cold.
Otherwise, on a cold morning of 20
degrees or so I light 6 heaters as I shiver
and shake.
Then I prepare breakfast which
includes pouring the fruit juice, cooking
the bacon, eggs and toast, putting on
the kettle, setting the table etc. Then I
call my two sisters who are able to be
up but have many ills and ails.
After breakfast I wash and dry the
dishes, clean the stove and sweep the
kitchen. While I do all this I sigh over
my antiquated kitchen which
desperately needs painting etc. I also
need a new refrigerator, new cabinets
etc.
Numerous other repairs to a very old
9 room house with 3 porches and 4
basement rooms and a garage and
numerous illnesses have taken most of
the money that one of my sisters and I
have earned after working as secretaries
over 40 years. We also now need repairs
to a few other rooms etc. in our house.
We do not have a car but one of our
neighbors mows the big lot in back of
our house in exchange for the use of our
garage, which was built when we did
have a car many years ago.
When I finish my kitchen chores I
sweep several rooms and use a carpet
sweeper on several rugs. We do not have
a vacuum cleaner. One of my sisters
who had major surgery two years ago
and who is 78 is still quite active within
limitations. She is a very good cleaner
upper and does a lot of mopping of
floors, dusting etc. She makes 2 beds
each day. She also works in our yard
front and back in certain seasons. She
and I clean the basement rooms and
garage now and then.
Each morning we all wash out
some clothes. We send some to the
laundry every other week. We have no
washing machine or dryer.
I collect all the trash from 15 trash
baskets every morning and I take that
and the garbage to the garbage cans in
our back yard.
We all three listen to one half hour
television program each morning.
We all say some prayers every day
including the morning offering and the
rosary.
When it is time for dinner my other
sister cooks it. She is a wonderful cook
in spite of many bouts with illness. She
is 75. In December she had the flu with
all kinds of complications including a
week’s hospitalization and she is still
under the doctor’s care. She cannot go
up and down steps due to 2 goiter
operations and nervous trouble. I set the
table etc. at dinner. My other sister does
the dinner dishes.
We all relax in the afternoon usually
taking a nap, visiting someone on our
street, reading etc. I usually fix a cold
supper, after which one of my sisters
does the supper dishes. After supper we
watch television if there is something
good. Ours is black and white.
Our 2 porches off the kitchen are
The Xavier Society for the Blind
announces the publication of a new
monthly magazine . . .THE CATHOLIC
REVIEW IN LARGE
PRINT . . .containing a wide selection
of interesting and informative articles
from Catholic newspapers and
periodicals.
Each issue will run about 66 pages in
length and will be printed in type about
three times the ordinary size. It will be
particularly convenient for those people
frigid in winter, having no heat, and
about 25 times a day we have to go on
them to get things which are kept there.
We go to bed at about 10. We never
go anywhere at night unless someone
takes us. We have one air conditioner in
the only place we could have one in this
old house. We almost collapse in our
steaming kitchen which is built neither
for air conditioner or fan. We take
grocery carts to a nearby store once a
week and someone takes us in their car
once a week. We are rich in friends,
some of whom did not ask the why or
wherefore but went into action
immediately to help us when my sister
was in the hospital. They took turns in
taking me to the hospital My sister
received some wonderful gifts also.
However, we three have many'
difficulties now and have never had it
easy. We had some advantages in spite
of little money. I graduated from Mt. de
Sales Convent here. We all had some
music lessons in piano and voice. We are
all fond of music, one of my sisters
being an opera lover. In fact, she is right
now listening to the Metropolitan Opera
Broadcast this afternoon.
An exciting life!! Well, what do you
think, Mr. Free Soul?
Anyway, thanks for listening to this
long ramble.
I enjoy your column so much. You
are a wonderful Catholic. I would like
to know a little about you, your family
life, how many children etc.
Sincerely,
