DCCW Meet Expects Record Crowd
A record attendance is expected this
year for the 34th Annual Convention of
the Savannah Diocesan Council of
Catholic Women. The Convention,
entitled “Sing out, my Soul” will be
held at the Ralston Hotel, Columbus,
Georgia, on May 5th and 6th. The
Columbus Deanery will host the
Convention, under the leadership of Mrs.
Melvin Hardy and Mrs. Cosmos J.
Dokos, Convention Co-Chairmen.
The principal speaker at Saturday
night’s banquet will be Mr. “Jim”
Rountree, President of the National
Council of Catholic Laity. Guest
speaker at Sunday’s “brunch” will be
Mrs. Joseph Spano, Food Editor for the
Columbus Ledger-Enquirer.
Savannah’s new Bishop, Monsignor
Raymond W. Lessard, who will be
ordained and installed in Savannah at
the end of April, has been invited to
give the Invocation at the banquet and
to give the Homily at Sunday’s Mass.
A tour of historic Columbus has been
planned by the Host Council as part of
the Convention activities, on Saturday
morning. A “Sharing Session” is
scheduled for Saturday afternoon, prior
to the opening business meeting, to
allow Commission Chairmen and
Affiliate Presidents to get together to
discuss questions and share ideas. The
session will be led by Diocesan
Organization Services Chairman Mrs.
Anthony (Betty) Purdy.
The DCCW business meeting will
begin at 2:15 p.m. Saturday, followed
by a workshop which will be introduced
by Miss Margaret Harrison, Workshop
Program Chairman.
The Convention Mass will be
celebrated at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday at
Holy Family Church. The “brunch”
meeting, which completes the business
of the Convention, will feature
installation of officers and “news from
National” brought by Mrs. E.P.
(Murphy) Faust, National Director,
Province of Atlanta.
Registration hours will be 7:00-8:00
p.m. on Friday, May 4th, in the Hotel
Lobby, and 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on
Saturday. A pre-Convention party is
planned for 8:00 p.m. at Holy Family
Parish Hall, Friday evening.
There is a $3.00 Registration fee,
with a charge of $8.00 for Saturday’s
banquet and a $5.00 fee for Sunday’s
“brunch.” Alternatively, those
attending may choose a $15.00
“package deal” which includes
registration, banquet and brunch.
All those attending pre-Convention or
Convention events should pay the
Registration fee (either separately or in
the “package deal”). Exceptions are to
be made for husbands who wish to
accompany their wives and may want to
purchase banquet and/or brunch tickets.
Local affiliates will pay for the banquet
or brunch for priests and nuns
attending. In this case a registration fee
is not required.
Room reservations should be made
directly with the Ralston Hotel. Please
fill out and mail the form on page 7.
Registration forms, also on page 7,
should be mailed to Mrs. John
Szymanski by April 20th. Payment
should be enclosed, if possible, with the
form. Tickets will be picked up at the
registration booth upon arrival.
Religious Leaders
Rap Budget Cuts
WASHINGTON (NC) - Leaders of
three major faiths have charged that the
federal government has proposed cuts in
the 1974 fiscal budget that “penalize
the most disadvantaged of our people.”
The statement had the signatures of
Bishop-elect James S. Rausch,
Washington, D.C., general secretary of
the National Conference of Catholic
Bishops and United States Catholic
Conference; Dr. R. H. Edwin Espy, New
York, general secretary of the National
Council of Churches; and Rabbi Henry
S. Seigman, New York, general secretary
of the Synagogue Council of America.

Editor:
Having read the response to your
remarks on Amnesty and followed the
highly explosive nature of this
controversy I felt an obligation to voice
my concern.
Since World War II we have become a
nation whose military interests and
involvements have caused great heart
break and division throughout our
country and the world. Not only within
the family unit but among nations who
many times had no choice.
Being aware of the many points of
view I wish to suggest to all Christians
that they examine their own conscience
on behalf of the 18 to 20 year-olds who
may have made the decision to refuse
serving in an undeclared war about
which most people, families, teachers,
friends and the Church were so divided
in opinion and confused in resolving.
Actions taken in this atmosphere are
not always either right or reasonable.
Having been around during WW II, I
can honestly say we all went to war and
we all won that war. Everyone went to
it a hero and fought or died a hero. A
brother, disabled in the Korean conflict
doubts the results of that involvement.
Several nephews and a son can do better
than I to explain Vietnam.
I only wish to convey in closing that
at no time in His teaching did our Lord
waste time on revenge and reprisals. I
Preaching
Dear Ron Pachence:
I just got through reading the
beautiful article you wrote on preaching
(Mar. 15). I can tell by the way you
express yourself that you will make a
fine priest. Praise the Lord.
Along with your other duties you
will be a preacher of the Word, not
adding or detracting, but preaching the
Word as it is written.
I believe you and I both would have
rejoiced in hearing St. Paul preach the
Word. That is why I read his epistles all
the time. Only wish I was Spirit-filled
like he was. So, Ron, when you are a
priest I hope I’m around to hear you
preach your first sermon. Thank the
Lord, who knows I hope some of the
other priests have read Shepherds in the
Wings and adhere in your truth.
This has got to happen in all our
churches and when God’s Word is
preached and we really learn how to
pray, then we can see our lives
transformed beautifully.

am sure there will be many times in
years to come when we must turn the
other cheek. We did to Germany, we did
to Japan. Are we not big enough to
open our minds and hearts to our
own .. .Saddened by what wars, not of
our own making, have done to our
wonderful people . . .

will we ever leam????????????
The proposed budget “eliminates,
diminishes, or postpones” important
social programs in education, urban
development, farm labor programs,
community action, housing, medicare
and child care, they said.
“Sharp reductions in many programs
of special importance to the inner city
break faith with the commitment of our
nation to treat the urban crisis as a
national problem.
“Sharp cuts in health and hospital
programs play havoc with the physical
needs of Americans, particularly the
young, the aged and the poor,” the
three general secretaries said.
They said social programs that are
not working should be modified, “but
they should not be reduced or
eliminated unless the problems they
were designed to ameliorate are reduced
or eliminated.”
A budget which discriminates or
appears to discriminate against the
disadvantaged “can only increase
alienation, cynicism and distrust,” they
warned. Such a budget “distorts our
nation’s moral purpose and social
vision,” they said.
The three religious leaders urged the
administration, Congress and all
Americans to carefully reflect on the
proposed budget. “Just decisions about
the way a nation collects and spends its
public funds are essential to the pursuits
of justice,” they concluded.
