Robbers Beat Priests
SAN FRANCISCO (NC) -- Auxiliary Bishop William A. McDonald of San Francisco,
three priests, the sexton, secretary and cook at St. Brigid’s Church here were bound
and robbed by an armed man-woman team. Two of the priests were pistol-whipped
but did not sustain serious injuries. All were robbed of personal possessions, including
wallets, watches, keys, and the bishop’s episcopal ring.
Worship Bolstered Faith
WASHINGTON (NC) - Improvised religious services bolstered the faith of prisoners
of war while ereatlv irritating their North Vietnamese captors, according to Air Force
Lt. Col. Robert H. Craner, a POW for five years. “We went through more conflict with
the North Vietnamese over our worship services than any other issue,” he said. “We
got a lot of static on it. But we didn’t let them hold us down, not on this. It was too
important to us.”
Pastoral Councils
WASHINGTON (NC) - The bishops of the United States have been asked to write
pastoral letters designed to encourage the creation of diocesan and parish pastoral
councils. The bishops own Advisory Council made the request in a letter that went to
the bishops along with a selection of documents on shared responsibility.

Puerto Rico in Quandary
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (NC) - Opinion here is divided on whether the U.S.
Supreme Court abortion decision applies here. As a commonwealth, Puerto Rico has
its own congress and courts, but also follows U.S. legislation in some fields. While
Puerto Rico’s Justice Department ruled that the abortion decision “does not apply
here,” a legislator has introduced a bill following Supreme Court guidelines. He said
the court’s decision left “Puerto Rico with practically no law.”

activities against the United Farm
Workers Union (UFW) in the Coachella
Valley of California.
“The AFL-CIO completely supports
the UFW,” Meany said. “They are
clearly union busting. They are engaged
in a concerted campaign to wipe out the
United Farm Workers.”
Two clergymen, one the chairman
and the other the consultant to the
Committee on Farm Labor of the
National Conference of Catholic
Bishops, praised Meany’s statement.
Bishop Joseph Donnelly, the
committee’s chairman, wrote Meany to
thank him for his “firm support of the
United Farm Workers Union.”
Msgr. George G. Higgins, the
committee’s consultant, wrote Meany:
“Your statement on the farm labor
crisis in the Coachella Valley was
magnificent.
“The farm workers are in serious
trouble, but with the support of the
AFL-CIO, under your aggressive
leadership, I am sure they will
undoubtedly win the war,” Msgr.
Higgins said.
Crowd Cheers-
(Continued from Page 1)
The Homily, just before the
ordination and investiture of Bishop
Lessard was delivered by Archbishop
Joseph Bernardin of Cincinnatti.
A banquet attended by more than
five hundred persons was held Friday
evening. Speaking on behalf of the
Diocese of Fargo was Monsignor David
J. Boyle. A speech of welcome was
delivered by Father J. Kevin Boland
who was Administrator Sede Vacante
(while the See is Vacant) of Savannah
until Bishop Lessard’s arrival in the
diocese.
The festivities came to an end
Sunday afternoon (Apr. 29) with a
public reception for Bishop Lessard.
Bernardin Homily—
(Continued from Page 1)
which was first given to the Apostles,
and which they have received, is now
given to this man also. “Now pour out
upon this chosen one,” they will pray,
“that power which flows from you, the
perfect Spirit whom you gave to your
beloved Son, Jesus Christ, the Spirit
whom he gave to the apostles, who
established the Church in every place as
the sanctuary where your name would
always be praised and glorified.” And
Father Lessard will then be Bishop
Lessard.
Because of their imposition of hands,
the ministry which the consecrating
bishops exercise in their local churches
can now be exercised by Bishop Lessard
in the Church of Savannah. Their action
will insert the new bishop into a body
that is universal in character. It will
signify that this man is accepted by the
college of bishops and by the Holy
Father who, as Bishop of Rome, is the
head of that college. Because of this, the
Church of Savannah over which he
presides cannot be isolated from the
other churches but must always be in
communion with them. In addition to
his multiple duties as your chief master
here in Savannah, Bishop Lessard will
share with the Holy Father and the
other bishops a responsibility for the
entire Church in both doctrinal and
pastoral matters. As the link between
the universal Church and the Church of
Savannah, he will be authorized to
speak to you in the name of the whole
Church and to speak to the other
churches in your name.
The second significant moment,
then, of our assembly - when hands are
imposed - is the all-important sign that
the Church of Savannah is a concrete
manifestation of the one Church of
Christ and that it is firmly rooted in the
apostolic tradition.
Thirdly, Bishop Lessard will preside
at our eucharistic liturgy which is the
supreme expression of his ministry to
you. It is indeed fitting that the first
official act of a newly ordained bishop
be the celebration of the eucharistic
sacrifice. A bishop, to whom is given the
fullness of the ministerial priesthood, is
charged with the responsibility to teach,
sanctify and govern, in the name of
Christ, that portion of the Lord’s
Church entrusted to his care. In the
celebration of the Eucharist the local
church experiences in a unique way the
presence and the community of Jesus.
The Eucharistic Sacrifice, together with
all the sacraments, makes the love of
God visible and causes the love and
unity of God’s people to grow.
In celebrating the Eucharist with and
for his priests and people, then, the
bishop is at the very heart of his
ministry, which is to build up,
transform and restore all men in Christ.
By partaking of his body and blood, the
Christian community perpetually
effects, renews and strengthens its bond
with Christ and makes itself subject
anew to its heavenly Lord.
As there is no Eucharist without the
bishop, so there can be no unity - the
first fruit of the Eucharist -- without the
bishop. As the one who presides over
the liturgical and sacramental life of the
Christian community, the bishop brings
together the local congregation of the
faithful and, united with him, they form
the local church in which Christ and his
Holy Spirit are present and vitally
active. «
The third moment of our assembly,
then, is of great importance. After you
have warmly welcomed your new
bishop, after his fellow bishops have
solemnly imposed hands on him, he will
proceed to fulfill his most essential
service by presiding at the celebration of
the mystery of faith.
Bishop Lessard, in speaking to your
priests and people about the role of the
bishop and the response they should
give to him, I have brought into focus
the many facets of the new ministry
you begin today. The task which lies
before you is a challenging one though,
admittedly, it may not always be an
easy one. You know, however, that God
will not fail you; He will give you the
wisdom and strength you need.
You also have the assurance that
your priests and people will support you
and cooperate with you. The warm
reception you have already received is
an indication of their great desire to
work with you in building up Christ’s
Church. And it will be only a short time
before they will know you as well as we,
your close friends, know you and before
they will love and respect you as much
as we do.
Finally, you have the satisfaction of
knowing that your brother bishops
welcome you warmly among their
number. We are grateful for the
outstanding work you have done for the
Church, especially your dedicated
service to the Holy See in the Sacred
Congregation for Bishops. We will be at
your side in the months and years ahead
to give you our cooperation and
encouragement, and also to receive from
you your counsel and support.
I call upon all of you here present to
be witnesses to the solemn imposition
of hands, that sacred action by which
Bishop Lessard will become a member
of the college of bishops and your chief
shepherd here in the Diocese of
Savannah. Pray to the Holy Spirit that
he will make this man a worthy bishop
who will be able to continue, in an
effective and creative fashion, the
ministry entrusted by Christ to the
apostles. And open your own minds and
hearts to the Spirit, so that you will be
able to take your place at his side and
work closely with him in bringing that
ministry to all God’s people.
RECTOR OF THE CATHEDRAL, Monsignor Daniel J. Bourke extends
greetings to Bishop Lessard at Savannah Airport last Thursday (April 26).
Priest in center is Father J. Kevin Boland, who was Administrator of the
diocese until Bishop Lessard’s arrival.
