GILLIAN BROWN
ON THE “BLUE LAWS”
One fine Sunday in May I came close
to committing a crime.
I bought a box of Kleenex.
Georgia’s “Blue Laws” forbid the
sale of certain items on Sundays.
Kleenex may or may not be on the
forbidden list, but it seems to be one of
a number of commodities which lie on
the borderline, making it difficult for
the lawabiding citizen to know just
what to do.
I first attempted to buy the
offending article at a curb market, on
the way home from church,
and I was told that Kleenex was not for
sale on Sundays. It was not listed as a
“necessity” and therefore fell beyond
the limits of the law. Furthermore, I
was informed that toilet tissue was also
on the list of “non-necessities”.
I felt like arguing about that one, but
with a small crowd of curious customers
beginning to gather round I decided to
let the subject drop.
I tried another tact.
“What about the paperback you let
me buy last Sunday?”
“Books and magazines are allowed. If
we prevented you from buying the book
we might be accused of suppressing the
news.”
The book in question was E.B.
White’s “Charlotte’s Web”. My children
/
might have waited another day or two
before reading it without any great
hardship.
It has been in print, after all, for over
twenty years, during which time (so the
“blurb” on the cover informed me) over
1,000,000 copies have been sold. Some
of them on Sundays.
I left the curb market (where I
must say I had been treated with the
utmost courtesy, though they must have
spotted my criminal tendencies) and
drove half way across town to a drug
store.
The manager of this particular drug
store had had the misfortune of being
arrested some time previously for selling
a forbidden item on a Sunday just at the
time when the authorities had decided
to re-enforce the “Blue Laws” after
several years of benevolent neglect.
I felt that the manager was an
upright citizen, and I knew that be had
been particularly sensitive about
keeping the wrong items out of the
hands of customers after his painful -
and heavily publicized - experience.
I asked whether I could buy a box of
Kleenex.
“Sure,” said the assistant kindly.
“Help yourself, lady.”
So I did.
Now I am bewildered.' Am I a
criminal or am I not? These days - with
rumors of bribery and corruption in
Washington, espionage at Watergate and
perjury all over the place - it’s beginning
to be hard to tell.

“Your six years as Headmaster of
Benedictine Military School have been
most fruitful for the Catholic Church,
for Savannah and for the hundreds of
young men enrolled at B. C. You have
combined the talents of an educator,
fund-raiser, administrator and priest in a
manner that has moved your fine school
forward in giant strides and reflected
credit on the great order of monks
founded so many centuries ago by St.
Benedict.
“Savannah shall be ever in the debt
of St. Vincent’s Archabbey for sending
you to Savannah, which has been made
richer by your coming.
“Our prayerful wish is that you will
continue in good health and will be
permitted with God’s Grace to reach the
50th sacerdotal milestone right here in
Savannah.
“Accompanying our toast of, “Well
Done, Father Aelred Beck,” is this gold
key to the City of Savannah which you
already have used to open all hearts and
all doors in Savannah. It bears
testimony to your Pittsburgh friends
that you now enjoy the “FREEDOM
OF THE CITY”.
Father Aelred began his teaching and
administrative work in 1947 at St.
Vincent Prep School. In 1953 he was
appointed assistant academic dean of
the college and dean the following year.
This post he held for 11 years when he
was named director of Development and
alumni at the Latrobe school.
The jubilarian has held his present
