Cadet of Class of ’19
Recalls Days at ‘B.C
BY D.V. O’DRISCOLL, ’19
In September, 1915, about 28 young
Freshmen enrolled at Benedictine in
what was then known as First
Academic. At the very outset, Father
Mathew Gray, classroom teacher,
informed us that ‘only about eight of
you fellows will last long enough to
graduate.”
RAILROADER: Desmond O’Driscoll
is a retired official of the Central of
Georgia Railway. He served with the
railroad for more than half a century.
He has been a member of the choir at
the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist
since his early ’teens.
In 1961, he was awarded a papal
medal by the late Pope John XXIII.
The Class of 1919 is included among
those alumni attending a Review and
luncheon on May 3rd.
He proved to be a wise and accurate
forecaster for on June 11, 1919, eight
diplomas were presented, and one of the
unique facts was that all eight graduates
were Irish and Catholic.
From the ranks of the eight graduates
of 1919, five chose to make Savannah
their home. Four of them are still active
Savannahians, which may prove we have
a pretty good city for both health and
bread-winning. Judge Henry B. Brennan,
the 5th member of the 1919 group, died
in 1969.
We were the only graduating class
that had four military commandants
during our four years, namely, Capt.
John Daily, Capt. Joseph Doyle, Capt.
Horace Brooks, son of the beloved Col.
Jordan F. Brooks; and Capt. Edward G.
Thomson, who commenced his many
years of valuable service to B.C. in
1918.
We did not have the services of Coach
John Scott for all of our four years as
the cigar-chomping football coach was
in active service during World War I.
Our class had many distinctions. We
were the first class to have a 25-year
reunion (1934) and a 50-year reunion
(1969), when we were the guests of the
B.C. faculty. We have had only one set
of officers serving since their election in
1919.
During the “Flu” epidemic in
1918-19, all of our classes were held
outdoors in compliance with
government regulations. We served as
honor guard at funerals of several cadets
lost during that difficult period.
On November 11, 1918, we led an
impromptu procession from Bull and
34th streets down to Broughton as all
Savannah went wild over news of the
Armistice.
We had some sad and some happy
and humorous periods during our four
years at B.C. We lost one of our beloved
young priests to TB in our early years,
saw a couple of appointments to the
U.S. Military Academy and had a lot of
classroom fun. I recall the time when
Wallace Sipple slipped one of those auto
horns (the kind operated by pressing a
large rubber bulb) on the seat of one of
the Cadets standing for a recitation. The
rauscous sound as the Cadet sat down
on the bulb upset both teacher and
class.
We were the graduating class when
athletics and other relations were
re-established in the spring of 1919 with
Savannah High School after several
years of a “cold war.”
I wonder how many of the old cadets
of that period, who are still around,
remember such sterling Benedictines as:
Bishop Leo Haid, Father Bernard Haas,
and Fathers Cornelius, Ambrose,
Eugene, Lawrence, Maurice, Mathew,
and maybe some others I have
overlooked?
I can recall Father Bernard banging
out on the piano, “There’ll be a hot
time in the old town tonight,” when
' inclement weather forced us to drill in
the old second floor auditorium, where,
incidentally, our graduation exercises
and minstrel shows were held.
I cannot recall all of them, but
there were quite a few brother
combinations during our years at
Benedictine, including: T. James and
Reid McNamara, John and Kirk Sutlive,
John, Jimmy and Arthur Rourke, Gus
and Jimmy Merkle, Audley and
Raymond Spellman, Bill, Paul and
George Kehoe, Paul and Pat Keating,
Herman and Bruna Jaekel and William
and Charles Helmly.
Reminiscing over school days brings
both smiles and tears. At the same time,
it makes you realize that Benedictine
remains a great asset to the City of
Savannah and continues in good hands
as the Class of 1974 steps forward to
receive diplomas. God Bless
Benedictine!

Knights of Columbus Day
The Knights of Columbus (Augusta’s Patrick Walsh Council 677 and John F.
Kennedy Council 5484) celebrated the 92nd Anniversary of their National
Organization by attending the 12:15 P.M. Mass at the Church of the Most Holy Trinity
on Friday, March 29th. Monsignor M.J. LeFrois was the celebrant assisted by
Monsignor Donnelly; Fr. Simmons and Fr. Doris. Immediately after the Mass, the
combined Councils of Knights attended a brief ceremony at the Statue of Patrick
Walsh in Barrett Plaza, with greetings from the Mayor of Augusta, Lewis A. Newman
and an anniversary message by Mr. Bernard J. Mulherin, the Past State Deputy for the
Knights of Columbus. The Knights placed a wreath at the Statue at the close of the
ceremony.
