Kevin Boland, pastor of Savannah’s Church of the Most Blessed Sacrament, presents awards at annual Sports Awards Night held on Friday, May 2nd. WALTER MULLER, ROBERT REMLER, PHILIP STRENSKI. Merit Scholarships All three of Benedictine Military School’s National Merit Finalists have received Merit Scholarships to continue their education at the college and university level. The scholarship winners are Robert B. Remler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce J. Remler, of 1332 Grace Dr., Philip N. Strenski, son of Dr. and Mrs. Theodore G. Strenski of 20 Wesley Crossing, Skidaway Island, and Walter J. Muller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter J. Muller of 640 Washington Ave. Remler and Muller have both received University of Georgia Foundation Scholarships to the University of Georgia. Remler plans to take pre-med courses in the Honors Program at the University, while Muller plans to major in physics. While at Benedictine Remler has served as president of the Student Council, president of the Senior Class, editor of the year-book, and a member of the National Honor Society and the varsity golf team. He is also salutatorian of the Senior Class. Muller is president of the French Club, an advisory board member of SODA, and a member of the National Honor Society, the varisty tennis team, and the school newspaper staff. Philip N. Strenski has won a $1000 National Merit Scholarship sponsored by the Weyerhauser Corporation. He plans to use his scholarship to attend Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri, to study mathematics. At Benedictine Strenski is STAR student, president of the Bridge Club, news editor of the school newspaper, captain of the Quiz Bowl Team, and a member of the French Club. He is also valedictorian of the senior class, and he was recently named a Putnam Fellow as a result of placing in the top five contestants in a national collegiate mathematics contest. Of thirteen National Merit Semifinalists named in Chatham County this year, four are students at Benedictine. Timothy Gallagher, also a senior at Benedictine, was earlier named a National Merit Semifinalist. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION CLASS received the Eucharist as a group during the Twelve O’Clock Mass April 27 in St. John the Evangelist Church, Valdosta. Father Patrick McCarthy is shown with the children as the celebrant of the Mass. CO-VALEDICTORIANS -- David Munn and Charles Pruszynski, graduating seniors of Aquinas High School, Augusta, Ga., will be co-valedictorians at Commencement Exercises on May 25th. The two students each earned an overall 96.4 scholastic average. Both received National Merit Scholarships, a $1,000 grant for Munn, and a renewable scholarship to Georgia Tech for Pruszynski. This is the second time in Aquinas’ history that co-valedictorians have been honored. Blessed Sacrament Track Team won First Place in the Knight of Columbus No. 631-sponsored track meet,-Saturday, April 26th. Members are: (left to right front row:) K. Williams, R. Thorpe, A. EXAMINATION RUNNER-UP - Ruben Melson of Pacelli High School, Columbus, placed second among students competing in the second-year level of Spanish in the National Spanish Examination held in Georgia last month. Melson was among several Pacelli students participating in the examination. JOSEPH LISICIA AND MARIE ROCHEFORT, both students of Blessed Sacrament School are shown with trophies each received in the recent Oratorical Contest sponsored by the Optimist Club of Savannah. In addition to placing first at the school level of the contest, Marie won first place at the Club Level where she competed with students from seven other schools. Marie was the recipient of a one hundred dollar savings bond. This was the second year she received this prize. In the boys’ competition Joseph placed first at the school level and was declared first runner-up in the club level contest of the Southside Optimist Club. The students wrote and delivered a four-five minute talk entitled “Give Me Your Hand”.
