And furthermore
Maybe you think news of the 36th
Annual DCCW Convention is “old hat”,
but I don’t. You see, I like old hats, and
so, here goes .. .
When I sent in my “wrap-up”, it was
more like a “book-up” of news, and
because of its length, the editors had to
cut some of the material. I didn’t want
to leave anyone out, so I went on and
on and on.
I’d like to thank Father Donahue and
John Markwalter and all who helped on
the coverage as my news was born, and
especiallly thank them for not “cutting”
anything in the articles prior to the
Convention.
In due respect to some of those
present, who didn’t quite make it to the
“wrap-up” because of my verbosity, I’d
like to make mention of them, please.
First, thanks to Mary Broderick who
covered the Convention so splendidly
on a local level and took complete
charge of lining up photos for the
“wrap-up”. Why do I keep saying that
phrase?
And to Mrs. Jack Hall, (Wilhelmina),
of Albany, 1st vice president of NCCW,
and immediate past president of DCCW
who brought greetings from the
National Council of Catholic Women,
and also stated that the National
Convention would be held in Portland,
Oregon, Nov. 7-11,1975.
And don’t let me forget, Kitty
McKenzie of Southern Cross in
Savannah, who, with Mary Broderick
was so helpful in passing along
information to me. And, also to Alida
Smith, who gave me background on a
few personalities. And to Claire
Kempton, our president who clued me
in on things I had to know about.
You might be interested to know that

Mis. A. T. Cyganiewicz, of Albany,
DCCW Parliamentarian, explained rules
governing elections. Report of
Credentials Committee and Certification
of Delegates was given by Mrs. Lucy
West, Savannah, and report of
Resolutions Committee was presented
by Mrs. James Anderson in the absence
of Mrs. Kenneth Markertt of Albany.
The report of the nominating
committee was read by Mrs. Carl
Sylvester of Augusta, and the Elections
Committee report given by Mrs. Clyde
Morgan of Macon. (If this sounds like
the minutes of the meeting, so be it. I
feel it is important news.)
Rev. Lawrence Lucree, Diocesan
Moderator installed the following
officers: Mrs. William A. Kempton, St.
Simons Island, as president of DCCW;
Mrs. Ted Lockwood, Macon, recording
secretary; Mrs. Harry L. Padgett, St.
Simons Island, corresponding secretary
and Mrs. Nell Runyon, Savannah,
treasurer. All of these ladies are serving
a second term.
Vice Presidents for the Savannah
Diocesan Council were also installed.
These ladies also serve as presidents of
their Deaneries: 1st, vice president, Mrs.
Thomas 0. Fultz, Jr., Savannah; 2nd
vice-president, Mrs. Eugene Long,
Augusta Deanery; 3rd vice president,
Mrs. Robert Slocum, Macon Deanery;
4th vice-president, Miss Mary Parker,
Valdosta-Brunswick Deanery and 5th
vice-president, Mrs. Carlton Ussery,
Albany Deanerv.
Mrs. Kempton recognized these past
presidents of DCCW who were in
attendance at the Convention: Mrs.
Norman Boatright, Jr., Augusta; Mrs.
Joseph Dembowski, Warner-Robins;
Mrs. Pauline Peuffier, Augusta; Mrs. P.
D. Joines, Brunswick; Mrs. J. Harry
Persee, Savannah, and Mrs. Jack Hall,
Albany.
It would be highly irregular not to
give a big hand to the following young
priests: Fathers Roy Cox, Liam Collins
and Dan O’Connell, all of St. James
Parish, Savannah, and Father John
Kenneally, Chancellor of the Cathedral
of St. John the Baptist, Savannah. These
priests outdid themselves bringing
entertainment to the banquet on
Saturday, April 26. The songs and
music, mostly of Irish nature, and
self-composed was great. And Father
Cox, in a more serious vein played three
beautiful selections oa the piano. Why
these young priests don’t head for the
“big time”, I can’t understand! (I guess
because they’re already in the “big
league”.)
The song dedicated to Msgr. Daniel
Bourke (naturally Irish) was a big hit
and a thrill to our Associate Moderator.
The Msgr. declared he was proud to be
an American citizen, and overjoyed at
Miss Mealey’s address. He paid special
tribute to the late Msgr. James
McNamare, citing him as “Mr.
Catholicism of the City”.
The night of the banquet, April 27,
was the second anniversary of Bishop
Lessard’s residence in Savannah as
Bishop of the Savannah Diocese. When
this event was brought to the attention
of the conventioneers by Father Lucree,
our Bishop received a standing ovation.
I’m kind of hop-scotching
about. . .At the workshop on Saturday,
April 26, Mr. Frank Oliver Downing,
Chatham County Commissioner,
believed to be the first Catholic ever
elected to the State Senate of Georgia,
brought greetings to the assembly.
Referring to Chatham County as “The
State of Chatham County”, he
expressed delight at being invited to
welcome the group.
Father Lucree, responding to Frank
Rossiter’s address, cited that he was
impressed by the simplicity of our
ancestors and feared that some Catholic
priests as well as lay people had lost
their simplicity of faith.
Msgr. Bourke said, “Women are
teachers and have much influence. They
are the heart of the home.”
Bishop Lessard, in his brunch address
declared, “It is heartwarming and
encouraging to see the young generation
continue the life of activity in the
Church. Not only in faith, but in every
area, Catholics should represent every
comer of this Diocese”.
He stated that he was concerned
about some of the developments of
Women’s Liberation, and alarmed by
apathy if we are going to achieve
reconciliation in our church. He added
that he saw Catholics in a universal
sense reaching out and embracing
everyone and everything. “Understand
tragedies of others”, he said. “Learn
what it means to share. Your possibilites
are enormous.”
The Bishop was particularly
concerned with DCCW’s first resolution:
“Open our hearts to the inspiration of
the Holy Spirit and to unite the people
of the world in a lasting peace.” He
expressed the desire that we all live up
to that resolution.
“In the name of the Blessed Mother”,
the Bishop said, “Do not try to be like
men. You are not only ‘the heart of the
home’, you are all of its parts.”
Lest I forget: Sister Mary Alvin,
administrator of St. Mary’s Home was
presented a check for $695 to aid in the
care of the children at the Home.
To Bishop Lessard: “When I asked
you for your sermon notes, you said I
didn’t need them, I had a photographic
mind. And you didn’t give them to me
either. Well, I don’t have a photographic
mind, it’s just the way my head is
shaped. Since John Markwalter has not
sent my carbon copy of the Convention
back yet, I really had to do some
clicking of the old camera upstairs to
come up with this. I threw my junky
notes away. I beg forgiveness if I
misquoted someone. It’s John
Markwalter’s fault. And him a Knight of
St. Gregory too!
The Annual May meeting of the St.
Joseph Hospital Auxiliary was held at
the home of Mrs. Thomas Maxwell,
3020 Park Avenue, Augusta,
Wednesday, May 14th.
Mrs. Hinton A. Owens (Dorothy)
installed the officers for the 1975-76
