Known as Father Ed, he died May 31
in Bogota, Colombia, where he was
assigned to the Glenmary Home
Missioners program. From 1943 to 1945
he served the St. Matthew’s parish in
Statesboro.
Fr. Ed, a native of Cleveland, joined
the Glenmary Home Missioners in 1939
and was ordained in 1943, just before
coming to Statesboro.
He later served a mission in the
mountains of Virginia, and in 1951 was
appointed to the Glenmary
headquarters in Cincinnati as head of
the Mission Office. In 1969, he went to
Bogota to establish a mission program
there.
FAIRFIELD, O. (NC) - Father
Robert C. Berson, 51, was elected
president of the Glenmary Home
Missioners for a second term.
He previously held the post from
1965 to 1971.

is self-supporting. Father Liam
O’Sullivan, a priest of the Diocese of
Savannah, is pastor of St. Matthews
Church, which was a former Glenmary
Mission Church. He succeeds Father
Robert J. Teoli who recently was
assigned to the Savannah area. Fr. Liam
O’Sullivan will take over the
responsibility of the Newman Center
according to the HERALD article.
The STATESBORO HERALD article
quoted Dr. Walter Peach of the Faculty
of Georgia Southern College who had
great praise for Sister Michelle’s
activities in the Statesboro area. Dr.
Fr. Edward Smith
His term of office will last four years.
He replaces Father Charles M.
Hughes, president since 1971, who will
return to the missions in Arkansas.
Also elected at the chapter were
Father John McNearney, Sylva, N.C.,
vice president, and Father Bob Poandl,
director of Glenmary students at Loyola
University in New Orleans, second vice
president.
Father Berson’s new post gives him
responsibility for the 127 members of
the society, of whom 74 are priests and
35 are Brothers.
Peach conducts a summer program for
exceptional children at GSC’s
laboratory school.
Quoting from the article:
“For the past three years, Dr. Peach
said, Sister Michelle has provided
transportation, either directly or by
arrangement, for children in the
program who, he said, otherwise would
not have had the opportunity to benefit
from the nine-week tutatorial program.
“Dr. Peach said that Sister Michelle
has lectured at GSC and has taught
religion each Sunday at Ft. Stewart to
seventh and eighth graders for some
time.
“Sister Michell was recently honored,
Dr. Peach said, by the Georgia Council
for Exceptional Children at the
council’s spring conference for her work
with that organization.
“Dr. Peach said that Sister Michelle
spends a “minimum of three hours a
day in prayer.” He said she considers
her main mission as “a woman in
prayer.”
“If the people could give Sister a
gift,” Dr. Peach said, “the greatest gift
they could give her would be their
prayers.”
“Sister Michelle was one of the early
organizers of the High Hope Center and
the Bulloch Association for Retarded
Children.
“Dr. Peach said that Sister Michelle
had a large role in selecting the site for
the center and preparing the building
for use as High Hope.
“The Rev. Francis Daunt, of the
Trinity Episcopal Mission said, “I hope
somebody like her comes along to take
her place. She’s done so much, mostly
on her own personality.”
“Sister Michelle says that her
departure indicates that the Glenmary
Order has completed its work in this
area.
“The Glenmary Order was founded in
1939 by Father William Howard Bishop
to serve the church in rural America.
Today, Glenmary priests go to South
America as well.
“(It was a Glenmary priest, Fr. Ed
Smith, who was the first pastor of St.
Matthews Catholic Church here. He died
last week in Columbia, South America.)
“The first Glenmary Sisters came to
Bulloch County v in 1963 with the
mission to “develop a parish
community.”
