WASHINGTON (NC) - Five new
eucharistic prayers will soon be made
available for use on a trial basis in
special Masses in the United States.
Three are for Masses with children and
two are for Masses of reconciliation.
The prayers may be used as soon as
the booklets with the texts are
published by the Bishops’ Committee
on the Liturgy.
Less than a decade ago, only one
eucharistic prayer was permitted in the
western Catholic Church. It was then
referred to more commonly as the
Canon of the Mass.
But in 1968 three other ancient
eucharistic prayers were revived and
approved for general use in the western
or Latin-rite Church. The five new
prayers bring the total number of
options to nine. In addition, the new
ones are the first ones presented
specifically for use on special occasions
or with special groups.
The first eucharistic prayer for Masses
with children is notable for its simple
language. In the preface, for example, it
says in part: “Father, you are always
thinking about your people; you never
forget us ... (Jesus) cured sick people;
he cared for those who were poor and

wept with those who were sad. He
forgave sinners and taught us to forgive
each other. He loved everyone and
showed us how to be kind ...”
The second eucharistic prayer for
Masses with children emphasizes
participation by the whole
congregation. At several times during
the preface the people respond “Glory
to God in the highest” or “Hosanna in
the highest.” After the consecration of
the bread, and again after the
consecration of the wine, they say:
“Jesus has given his life for us.”
Between the consecration and the Amen
concluding the eucharistic prayer, four
times at appropriate moments the
people respond, “We praise you, we
bless you, we thank you.”

SAN FRANCISCO (NC) - The
National Assembly of Women Religious
(NAWR) will hold its fifth annual
convention at the University of San
Francisco Aug. 7-10 on the theme
“Gospel Commitment: Focus for the
80s.”
More than 500 Sisters are expected to
attend the convention of the NAWR,
whose membership includes 3,500
individual Sisters as well as Sister’s
councils in 103 dioceses throughout the
country.
Sister Margaret Farley of the Sisters
of Mercy, associate professor of ethics
at Yale Divinity School, will give one of
two keynote addresses, reviewing the
meaning of religious commitment in an
era of social change.
The other keynote speaker, Saul
Mendlovitz, professor of international
law at Rutgers University in New Jersey
and president of the Institute for World
Order, will speak on the four values --
peace, economic well-being, social
justice and ecological well-being - that
he believes are crucial if the world is to
avoid tyrannical despotism or a
cataclysmic series of mini-disasters.
The third eucharistic prayer for
Masses with children will eventually
offer variable parts for different seasons
and occasions. For the present, only the
basic prayer and a variation for the
Easter season are approved.
The new eucharistic prayers were
initially developed in Latin by the
Vatican’s Congregation for Divine
Worship as a result of instructions from
Pope Paul VI. He approved the Latin
texts Oct. 26, 1974. After that,
translations in other languages were to
be made by bishops’ conferences or
their agencies, and individual countries
would be allowed to use a text in their
native language only upon the request
of the bishops’ conference and approval
by the Holy See. The Congregation for
Divine Worship approved the U.S.
bishops’ request in a letter received here
June 5.
The liturgy committee announced
that, because of the provisional nature
of the new prayers, they will be
published only in booklet form.
They will be distributed by the
publications office of the U.S. Catholic
Conference here.

astronauts share a cabin in space during the historic
linkup of the Apollo and Soyuz spacecraft. Listening
to President Gerald Ford talk to them are, Valery
Kubazov, Alexei Leonov, Thomas Stafford and Donald

a sign of cooperation and a portent of scientific
triumphs to come. (NC Photo)
Pope Merges Two Vatican Offices
VATICAN CITY (NC) - Pope Paul
has merged two departments of the
Church’s central administration, the
Congregation for Discipline of the
Sacraments and the Congregation for
Divine Worship, into a single
congregation.
In an apostolic constitution dated
July 11 and made public six days later,
Pope Paul established the new
Congregation for the Sacraments and
Divine Worship. The new congregation,
which assumes the responsibilities of the
two it displaces, is scheduled to begin
functioning Aug. 1.

New Officers Begin Duties
On Augusta Hospital Board
The operating Board of Augusta’s St.
Joseph Hospital began its new year on
Wednesday, July 16, under the
leadership of the following new officers:
Chairman, Peter M. Menk;
Vice-chairman, Edward A. (Wish)
Markwalter, Treasurer, Bryce Newman;
Secretary, Sister Jeanne Urschel.
Menk, a native of Montclair, N.J., has
been active in the civic and religious
affairs of Augusta for the past two
decades. Mr. Menk served in the U.S.
Navy during World War II. He is a
graduate of Fordham University and is
Chairman of the Board and President of
the Menk Company which he founded
in 1963.
Menk is a member of St. Mary’s
on the Hill Catholic Church. He is
married to the former Miss Rosemary
Brittingham. The couple have six
children.
Markwalter is a native of Augusta.
He, too, served in the U.S. Navy during
World War II. He is a graduate of Spring
Hill College, Mobile, Ala., and is a
partner in Victor Markwalter and Co.
He has held many offices in the Society

was presaged in January 1974 when
Australian Cardinal James Knox was
made prefect of both.
The Congregation for Discipline of
the Sacraments has jurisdiction over all
seven sacraments, except in matters
falling within the competence of other
congregations of the Church’s central
administration, known collectively as
the Roman Curia. Doctrinal matters
regarding the sacraments, for example,
are the responsibility of the
Congregation for the Doctrine of the
Faith.
Rites and ceremonies for the
celebration, administration and
reception of the sacraments falls within
the competence of the Congregation for
Divine Worship, which also has
jurisdiction over all questions regarding
liturgical and extraliturgical worship in
the Latin rite.
The Congregation for Divine Worship
was created by Pope Paul in 1969 when
he divided and made autonomous the
two sections of the former Congregation
of Rites, one dealing with divine
worship or liturgy and the other with
the causes of the saints, that is
canonizations and beatifications.
The new congregation supplanting
the Congregation for Divine Worship
and the Congregation for Discipline of
the Sacraments will be divided into two
sections - one for discipline of the
sacraments and the other for divine
worship. An undersecretary will be
assigned to each section, working under
the congregations’s cardinal-prefect and
secretary.
