DCCW Notes
BY TICKI LLOYD
Summer Board Meeting
My thanks to Alida Smith for sending
me a copy of the minutes of the
summer DCCW Board meeting held in
Macon at Cag’s Restaurant on July 15
so I could gain some knowledge of what
transpired.
I missed being among all my friends
of DCCW and hope to attend the winter
meeting.
Monsignor Daniel Bourke, Associate
Moderator of DCCW, was on hand to
open the meeting with a prayer. And
Claire Kempton, DCCW’s “on the go”
president extended her usual warm
welcome to the members.
A summary of Deanery Vice
President reports were given followed
by Commission reports.
Alida, giving the Savannah Deanery
vice president’s report in the absence of
Barbara Fultz, noted that the board
meeting of the deanery will be held
August 13, and the fall meeting on
either of these dates: September 21 or
September 28. As has been done in the
past, the Savannah Deanery CCW will
sponsor the St. Patrick’s Eve Senior
Citizens’ Party, and will also serve
refreshments following the
Golden/Silver Jubilee celebrations held
for the past years at the Cathedral of St.
John the Baptist whereby couples renew
their vows at a special Mass and receive
a scroll from Bishop Lessard. The date
will be announced later.
Jane Long of Augusta told of plans to
involve the Sisters in the work of the
Council of Catholic Women. The Sisters
will continue their work with BIB
Program and the Social Apostolate in
sponsoring Vietnamese families.
Macon’s Deanery President, Hattilyn
Slocum stated that the Deanery Board
will meet in August, and the fall
meeting is planned for October. On
September 16 a “Quiet Day” will be
observed.
Evelyn Gallman of Columbus advised
that it was essential for all diocesan
chairmen to send their plans to Max
Nolan before the board meeting in
August.
Lucille Ussery of Albany said that St.
Teresa’s Parish is sponsoring a
Vietnamese orphan. Since the Albany
Deanery plans an all-out effort to
enlarge their membership to include
more activity on a local and deanery
level, it is necessary for those interested
to attend the deanery meeting in
mid-October.
Claire made specific mention that
information copies of all commission
reports and plans be sent to deanery
commission and presidents as well as to
her. The deadline for this information is
August 7.
Claire has compiled and distributed a
DCCW Manual containing general
information about councils. The air fare
to the NCCW Convention in Portland,
Oregon, on November 7-11 is $350, and
Claire urges those who can possibly
attend to do so.
God did not love only once and cease
to love. His is an eternal love. If the
members of the Diocesan Council of
Catholic Women were not aware of the
immediate and constant love of their
neighbor, they could never achieve such
tremendous goals.
All of the commissions, viz., Church
Communities; St. Mary’s Home; Family
Affairs; Birthright; Community Affairs;
Social Apostolate; WICS; International
Affairs; Organization Services and
Public Relations have one thing in
common. They unanimously support
the various aspects of the work
relegated to them for the common good
of all. Their work is a now>movement,
and no time is lost in following through.
In my second term as Public
Relations Vice Chairman of DCCW
never have I found anything superficial
about the reality of togetherness of the
Diocese of Savannah.
Father Kevin Boland has requested
the DCCW to co-sponsor with Blessed
Sacrament Church the Natural Family
Planning Workshop to be presented the
weekend of October 18-19 at the
Holiday Inn, Gateway South, in
Savannah. Mrs. Mercedes Wilson, a
prominent teacher of the Ovulation
Method, and Dr. John Brennan of
Milwaukee, a past president of the
National Federation of Catholic
Physicians’ Guild, will present the
program.
Claire reported that Bishop Raymond
Lessard urges all women of the DCCW
to become actively involved in the
Nation’s Bicentennial by taking part in
their local parish events. The Bishop
feels that since the DCCW is so well
organized, it has much to offer the
Bicentennial Celebration.
During the month of September, a
Diocesan Workshop will be presented by
DCCW president, Claire Kempton and
Alida Smith, Organization Services
Commission Chairman. Deanery
presidents will be contacted for
confirmation of dates for the
Workshops.
Monsignor Bourke announced that if
anyone wanted to sponsor a refugee
family, they should write to him at the
Chancery since he is the Director of
Resettlement for the diocese. The
Monsignor stated the main problem
with the refugees is that they are in
need of classes to educate them to
follow the Mass in English. He asked
that the DCCW undertake this project.
The Monsignor also requested names
from each deanery to serve as contact
representatives for St. Mary’s Home.
The names of such persons will be
forwarded to the Board of Directors of
the Home.
A very important event in the
Diocese is the 100th Anniversary
Celebration of St. Maty’s Home which
will be held on Sunday, September 14,
1975, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Everyone
is invited to participate.
Before the close of the meeting
subscription cards were distributed by
Claire who urged deanerv chairmen to
subscribe to CATHOLIC WOMAN
MAGAZINE for a fee of $5 annually. ,

Necrology
BY FR. RON PACHENCE
The psalmist invites the faithful to
“praise the Lord with timbral and
dance.” On Sunday, July 27th, the
11:30 Mass at St. Benedict’s was just
that kind of praise.
The “timbrals” were provided by
members of the Savannah Little Theater
GODSPELL cast, the dance, by five
gifted young ladies “borrowed” for the
occasion from St. Anthony’s parish.
Mary Sue Bailey, music director and
soloist, lead the cast and congregation in
the opening song, “Day By Day.” While
Fr. Nijem, pastor of St. Benedict’s and
celebrant, prepared the gifts at the altar,
David Mims sang “All Good Gifts.” For
communion all joined in for “You Are
the Light of the World,” and after
communion talented Michaei Bodzner,
who played the part of Jesus in the
Little Theater production, sang “God
Save the People.” The celebration ended
with the cast and congregation praising
God with “Prepare Ye the Way.”
Other members of the troupe
included Georgetta Blair of St.
Benedict’s, Tricia Hasen, Carmel Garvin
and Phil Leonard. Music was provided
by Jayna Banner, pianist; John
Tabakian, drummer; and John Lyons,
guitarist and summer music minister at
St. Benedict’s.
As an added highlight to Sunday’s
celebration, the communion meditation
was an interpretative dance to “On the
Willows” from GODSPELL. Pat Lemon,
Kim Michael, Debra Michael, Tini Eason
and Teresa Strickland danced a reverent
and magestic tribute to God’s pilgrim
people in exile.
After Mass, members of the
congregation expressed their approval
and appreciation of these young artists
who shared their time and talent to help
the St. Benedict’s community “make a
joyful noise unto the Lord.”

College isn’t the
only place to continue
your education.
You may not join the Army to get a college education, but it
may end up that way.
Last year alone, 90,000 young men and women earned college
credits while serving in the Army. And the Army paid up to 75%
of the tuition.
And now, through the Army’s newest educational program,
Project Ahead, you can enlist in the Army and start college at the
same time.
