In a secret consistory preceding the public function, Pope
Paul pleaded vigorously for authentic implementation of Second
Vatican Council decrees.
Archbishop Lefebvre has been ordered on several occasions
by Pope Paul to close his traditionalist seminary in Econe,
Switzerland, and has not done so.
The Pope appealed to the archbishop and his followers to
“reflect with serenity, and without closed minds” on their
refusal to accept the Second Vatican Council.
Fatima Celebration; Fleet Blessing
Brunswick’s 39th annual Fatima Celebration and Blessing of
the Fleet took place on Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day was chosen
for this event, not only to honor all mothers living and dead,
but because of its close proximity to the date of apparitions of
Our Lady of Fatima to the three shepherd children of Portugal
in 1917.
Sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, cooperating with the
Sodality of Our Lady of Fatima, highlight of the weekend
celebration was a Mass celebrated by Father Robert Baker, S.M.,
pastor of St. Francis Xavier Church. Preceding the Mass, a
procession was held with four Portuguese men carrying the hand
carved statue of Our Lady of Fatima enthroned in a blanket of
according to the rite established in the 16th-century by Pope
Pius V, the so-called Tridentine Mass.
The Pope then criticized “with equal firmness”
ultra-progressives “who believe themselves authorized to create
their own liturgy, sometimes limiting the sacrifice of the Mass or
the sacraments to the celebration of their own lives or of their
own struggle.”
He condemned the practice of intercommunion.
Ultra-conservative Catholics who cling to preconciliar
practices as well as ultra-progressives who have gone beyond the
council’s directives came under strong papal criticism.
The Pope singled out for rebuke Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre,
who has founded a popular international traditionalist
movement, a seminary and several religious houses.

SUNDAY-JUNE 6
Propagation Of Faith Collection
BY MSGR. FELIX DONNELLY
Propagation of Faith Director
Diocese Of Savannah
1976 is the 50th year that people of
the United States are sending an annual
collection to the Propagation of The
Faith, the international organization for
the spread of Missions.
The organization was actually begun
in Lyons, France by a working girl,
Pauline Jaricot, who gathered a few
friends for a home social to raise money
to send to missionaries. Since that time
about 153 years ago, the Propagation of
the Faith has grown to be an official
world-wide Mission Helper.
The Propagation of the Faith helps
each of us to fulfill our inner mission
Glenmary Assignments
Bishop Raymond W. Lessard confirms the assignment of the following
priests of the Glenmary Home Missioners:
FR. WILLIAM SMITH, pastor of St. Christopher Church, Claxton, and its
missions, effective July 1, 1976.
FR. FRANCIS KORZINEK, pastor of Our Lady of Assumption Church,
Sylvania, and its mission, effective August 3,1976.
FR. DOMINIC DUGGINS, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Waynesboro,
and its mission, effective June 10,1976.
They will replace Fathers James Wilmes, Laurence Goulding and Edward
Gorny, all of whom are being re-assigned to other positions outside the
Diocese of Savannah.
spirit by giving the opportunity to help
them through their missions in over 830
countries to dispense vitamins,
medicines, food and clothing, as well as
education. Except for the vitamins and
food we help them dispense, many
children would be permanently blind,
illiterate, undernourished. Many would
lack the education they need to better
themselves.
The missionary comes not with the
faith only, but with food, medicine,
education, brought through the clinic
and school which are part of the
Mission. In this way people are prepared
for a better life. Many leaders in the
emerging nations were trained in
Catholic Mission Schools.
Last year the Diocese of Savannah
contributed about $11,000.00 to the
Propagation of the Faith Collection.
From this same organization we
received $70,000.00 for missions in our
Diocese. The abundant return Our Lord
promised. We help our own missions
when we help others in the Propagation
of the Faith.
Every Catholic is a missionary to
bring the faith to others by word and
example. Each of us may accompany
the missionary in the spread of the faith
and the alleviation of human misery by
making a sacrifice for the Propagation
of the Faith on June 6th, the Feast of
Pentecost, the day the Apostles
accompanied the Holy Spirit to spread
the faith of Jesus. The Birthday of the
Church.
BRUNSWICK
SHRIMP BOAT passing in review at Brunswick’s
Blessing of the Fleet.
VATICAN CITY (NC) - Pope Paul VI surprised the Church
May 24 by bestowing the cardinal’s red hat on the Archbishop
of Hanoi, North Vietnam - one of two men he had named
cardinals “in pectore” (“in his breat,” or secretly) a month
earlier.
Archbishop Joseph Marie Trin nhu Khue, 76, was present
among the 20 bishops, including Archbishop William Baum of
Washington, D. C., whom the Pope raised to the rank of cardinal
in colorful ceremonies before 6,000 people in the new papal
audience hall.
flowers. The statue, approximately five feet in height, was
carved from a solid block of Brazilian cedar. A gold filigree
crown, studded with precious stones and used only during this
annual event, was placed on the head of the statue.
During the Mass and procession, the adult choir, under the
direction of Mr. Charlie Poremba, lead the singing of Portuguese
and English hymns.
The annual Blessing of the Fleet took place in the afternoon
at the Moreira Docks at the foot of Albermarle Street. A special
blessing by Father Baker was invoked for each boat passing in
review.

IN SAVANNAH DIOCESE
Penance Rite Effective June 1
“They can find today the support and the sustenance that
they are seeking in the renewed forms of the council,” the Pope
asserted.
The Pope pinpointed as especially serious the refusal of
traditionlists to accept liturgical reforms.
“The adoption of the new liturgical missal is certainly not left
to the free choice of priests or faithful,” the Pope declared.
“In no different way did Pope Pius V make obligatory the
missal reformed under his authority, following the Council of
Trent.”
Many traditionalists still attend Masses illicitly celebrated
WORLD COMMUNICATIONS DAY ~ ‘The Mass
Media and the Fundamental Rights and Duties of
Man” is the theme of the annual World
Communications Day set for May 30. In his message
for World Communications Day, Pope Paul VI stressed
the power and responsibility of the media for
educating and training people in their fundamental
human rights and duties.
The Southern Cross
DIOCESE OF SAVANNAH NEWSPAPER
At the direction of Bishop Raymond
W. Lessard, the New Rite of Penance or
Reconciliation will be officially intro
duced in the Diocese of Savannah begin
ning June 1,1976.
Effective with that date, the new rite
may be used in those parishes of the
diocese which have conducted the
prescribed preparatory cathechesis. The
minimum required before a parish may
introduce the new rite would be at least
three homilies on the subject.
Most parishes of the Diocese
conducted programs on the New Rite
during the Lenten Season or have
covered it as part of their Adult
Education Classes.
In making the announcement of the
introduction date Bishop Lessard
stressed that the use of three homilies as
a catechesis was a bare minimum. The
bishop said, “the providential occasion
of introducing a revised rite would
suggest that much more be done, both
on behalf of the minister of the
sacrament as well as those who will be
receiving it ... we should not remain
satisfied merely with preparatory
catechis, but should seek to extend that
instruction so that it becomes a
continuing part of our educational
mission.”
The Reformed rite of Reconciliation
is the last of the major liturgical changes
following the Second Vatican Council.
The new Confessional Rooms to be
used with the new rite will have a
screen, giving the penitent the option of
being behind the screen or facing the
priest.
What has changed is:
-The emphasis on the prayerful
attitude of both priest and penitent in
the rite.
-The emphasis on the sacrament as an
act of reconciliation between the
penitent and God.
-The emphasis on Scripture in the
rite. In the new rite there is an
invitation to the penitent to trust in
God, which may be in words from
Scripture. There is also an option for a
scriptural reading that proclaims God’s
mercy and calls persons to conversion.
The prayers make better use of
Scripture.
-The emphasis on the communal or
social aspects of sin and reconciliation.
This occurs in the new rite in several
ways - the various options for
communal celebrations, more emphasis
on the social aspect of sin in the
examination of conscience and
confession of sins, and explicit mention
in the absolution formula of the
“ministry of the Church” through
which God grants pardon and peace.
Nearly $17,000

As of May 15, the people of the
Diocese of Savannah had
contributed $16,714.52 for
Guatemalan Relief.
Bishop Raymond Lessard wishes
to thank all those who have so
generously contributed since the
February earthquake. He is most
pleased, edified and grateful to the
Catholic people of South Georgia.
