Father William P. Dowling was
honored on Saturday, May 15th at a
luncheon given for him by the Diocesan
Social Apostolate Office, at the Holiday
Inn in Dublin. Social service staff,
priests and sisters of the Diocese were
present.
Father Dowling received the 1976
Distinguished Service Award, in
recognition of his years of dedicated
service as Vicar for Social Affairs and
first Coordinator of the Diocesan Social
Apostolate Office. Father Joseph Dean,
of McCrae, presented him with a
plaque. A presentation was also made
by Sister Catherine Moore, of the
Savannah Social Apostolate Office.
Father Dean and Sister Julian Griffin,
the present Vicar for Social Affairs, told
of Father Dowling’s hard work, his
prophetic vision and his courage in
taking a stand on sometimes unpopular
issues. Main speaker at the luncheon was
Mrs. Joenelle Brown Gordon, of the
Westside Comprehensive Health Center
in Savannah.
Father Dowling gave an informal talk,
speaking of his more recent thoughts on
social and individual change in today’s
world. He discussed the role of
competition in society today, stressing
the need for more constructive forms of
competition which would allow positive
alternatives to “losers.”
Fr. William Dowling
Father Dowling is at present on
leave, studying in Valdosta. He became
Social Apostolate Coordinator in 1968,
after some years as a pastor in
Columbus. He initiated many successful
social service projects in the Savannah
Diocese, worked on a number of
publications, and was instrumental in
raising funds. He has travelled in Europe
and Latin America.
8 Awarded
Under New
Eight Religion Teachers in the
Savannah Diocese have recently received
“Catechists’ Certificates” under the new
Teacher Recognition Program,
sponsored by the Department of
Christian Formation.
The new program, which went into
effect in May 1976, was designed to give
Religion Teachers additional incentives
to continue their own education, by
outlining different available learning
opportunities and setting definite goals.
The “Catechists’ Certificate” is
awarded to a teacher with at least one
year of teaching experience, upon
completion of a minimum of 60 credits
within the preceding three years. The
credits earned must be distributed over
the areas of Theology, Liturgy,
Teaching Techniques and Scripture.
A “Certificate of Recognition” is also
awarded, under the new program, to a
teacher upon completion of a minimum
of 20 credits in a given year.
The Recognition Program offers a
wide variety of learning opportunities,
which range from correspondence
courses to taped lectures,
locally-sponsored educational programs,
summer courses outside the Diocese,
private reading, and the experience of
teaching itself.
Those teachers who have already
received the “Catechists’ Certificate”
are as follows:
Brother Joseph Teston, Sister Eilish
Kelly, and Sister Marie-Rene Pretti
(Aquinas High School, Augusta), Mrs.
