Liturgical Commission
Meeting Held At Dublin
BY SR. CAMILLE COLLINI
Members reported on the catechesis
and implementation of the New Rite of
Penance in their parishes and deaneries
at the April 29th meeting of the
Savannah Diocesan Liturgical
Commission. Reports at the Dublin
meeting revealed some parishes in the
Diocese have Reconciliation Rooms in
use already.
Father Fred Nijem said he felt the
role of the Liturgical Commission in the
New Rite “should be the continuing
education of the priests and people; the
priests have the key role and if they do
not provide the opportunity and setting
it won’t happen.”
Monsignor Marvin LeFrois,
Commission Chairman, read a letter he
had received from Father Michael Smith
stating that following the Clergy
Meeting and the last Senate Meeting
some of the priests said they felt it
would be helpful for the Liturgical
Commission to consider some kind of
exhortation or guidelines on the need to
interview-instruct parents before
baptizing their children. It was noted
that Fr. Roy Cox’s paper, “The rites of
Initiation, Some Observations and
Recommendations on Infant Baptism”
contained some suggestions that could
be incorportated into guidelines.
Concerning the Eucharistic Congress
Observance in the Diocese, Msgr.
LeFrois announced that a Diocesan
Pilgrimage had been set for July 31st in
Macon, at Holy Spirit Church. Msgr.
LeFrois and Fr. Liam Collins will meet
and work with the Macon people in
planning for the celebration. It was
noted that Albany and Augusta are
planning Deanery celebrations.
A report on the Region IV Meeting of
the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical
Commissions held in Atlanta on April
20th was given by Sr. Camille who
represented the Savannah Diocese at the
meeting.
A motion was made and carried that
the Savannah Liturgical Commission
send $25 to Fr. Robert Traupman,
Region IV Representative, to help
defray mailing expenses.
Mr. Gerald Cantwell spoke of the
highlights of this year’s Folk Music
Workshop. He said that three new
groups had evolved over the last three
years; many groups are writing their
own music; many groups are making
their own arrangements; there is a need
for some central place for parishes to be
serviced with tapes of music. The next
workshop is tentatively set for late
March or early April at St. James in
Savannah. Mr. Cantwell said that the
changed format this year helped the
attitude of the participants and that
approximately ninety-six participated in
the workshop this year.
A letter was received from the El
Paso Diocese asking about guidelines for
our Liturgical Commission which we
might share with their newly formed
Liturgical Commission. They also
requested information regarding the
implementation of the New Rite of
Penance in our diocese.
Sr. Camille Collini was asked to
attend the National Federation of
Diocesan Liturgical Commissions
Convention to be held in Indianapolis,
Indiana on October 11-14, 1976.
Agenda items for the next meeting
are Baptism Guidelines and Continuing
Education of the Clergy.

Additional Sponsors Needed
After resettling over 130,000 Southeast Asian refugees in the United States last year, the
government plans to bring in an additional 11,000 refugees from holding camps in Thailand by the end
of June. The United States Catholic Conference has accepted the responsibility for well over half of
the 11,000 refugees and both individual and group sponsors are urgently needed.
SPONSORSHIP—A Christian Endeavor
Sponsorship is simply the extended hand of you and your
neighbor to help new arrivals and their families with
their first steps in your community.
Sponsorship means the location of a dwelling place and
basic temporary necessities, a school for the children
and a job for the breadwinner.
Sponsorship of a refugee family could also be a group
endeavor of your parish or your neighborhood. The
commitments are minimal, the rewards unlimited.
Sponsorship means meeting the family upon arrival,
orienting each member to the community, and assisting
with job placement.
Sponsorship does not commit you to any legal or
financial obligation. It is at most a moral commitment.
We hope you can provide the basics needed for family
resettlement.
However, funding as needed can be provided by your
Diocesan Resettlement Director.
SPONSOR'S OFFER
We would like to sponsor a refugee family.
We can provide:
independent sponsorship
. shared sponsorship
Note: Independent sponsorship indicates the ability to
locate housing, employment, and to help provide for
the basic needs of refugees for the initial weeks.
Shared sponsorship implies joining together with
others to provide support in these areas. This
is an ideal parish endeavor.
We can welcome a family of.
