DCCW Notes
Understand Your Mother
Much of the work done under the
Savannah Diocesan Council of Catholic
Women involves volunteered effort of
mothers into giving service to others.
Though the message below is intended
for Birthright volunteers, and their
families, it still holds true to all services,
such as WICS, SERVE, SOCIAL
APOSTOLATE, GIRL SCOUTS, ST.
MARY’S HOME GUILD, RIGHT TO
LIFE, and other SOCIAL SERVICES. It
is important that the whole family
understands a women’s concern, and the
message below best describes it.
“Dear Children and Birthright
Families:
Your mothers have volunteered to
serve in the Army of God in the battle
for the lives of the unborn . . . YOU
have been drafted. You are just as
important, for what is an Army without
its unsung privates, corporals and
sergeants?
Perhaps you wonder at times if your
mothers care more for the unseen girl
on the end of the telephone than she
does for you? You do KNOW that she
would probably not allow YOU to talk
so long on the telephone ... or maybe
give you that much of her time in a
lump .. . and your judgment is right.
You question her priorities and ask
yourself WHY?
I will tell you. Every time your
mother talks to a girl or woman who is
disturbed it is YOU she speaks to. She
hopes and prays that someone would
help YOU in this way if you were
troubled. She is also thinking of her
sons in every Birthright conversation,
knowing that God’s plan within the
human family does encompass total
sexuality -- male and female.
She has not chosen between family
and Birthright. She has chosen the First
Commandment of loving God with her
whole heart, whole soul, whole mind by
her commitment to His life in others .. .
and it follows that the action required
from this commitment means that she
must love her neighbor as herself. She
loves you first and best. .. her flesh and
blood . . . but she has other neighbours.
And because she values YOU above all
others, having known the tremendous
gift that you are to her, she is compelled
to nurture ALL life. Your mother
cannot IMAGINE existence without
YOU and she has been forced to think
by what is happening in our society . . .
is there a Mary, Charles, Louise, an
Einstein, Beethoven in the garbage cans
of New York or California? The thought
is so repellant that everything within her
has cried out NO! -- the world must not
be deprived of my children or anyone’s.
That is why your mother is in
Birthright. Because of you. Because you
so represent the image of God to her in
its most glorious way in this life. It is
the greatest compliment she can pay to
you . .. the recognition of your infinite
worth. What is asked of you is to
understand this, to know you are
necessary as the primary inspiration. So
when sacrifices are asked of you .. .
know it is because she feels you are
strong enough to stand alone a little
while ... she will be back . .. she must
put her finger in the dike of the flood of
blood that stands behind the wall of
civilization. Everyone that CARES must
take a turn. It is for YOU. It is for all. It
is for God. She teaches you this way . . .
she needs you . . . and she knows the
world needs you to do likewise when
you are grown and now. It is her way of
passing the torch of faith and love.
Aren’t you GLAD she thinks you
strong enough not to tie solely to her,
not her to you? The Truth has set both
of you free to look beyond the narrow
confines of your home to the whole
world and say .. . for now, my part is
patience, watching, learning and
understanding. . . some day I will be a
leader because I have come up from the
ranks. My parents chose me to BE and
God has chosen me to SERVE.
On Calvary, OUR LORD gave his
mother to the world .. . two thousand
years later, He asks you to share yours
in small imitation of that marvelous and
transcending gesture. The WAY OF
DIVINE LOVE is different in every
age ... it has never been more beautiful
than it is in ours through Birthright
simply because WHOLE FAMILIES can
be joined in true spiritual vocation as a
UNIT... not LEAVING the world but
changing it from within, seeking positive
solutions together. It is
CHRISTIANITY not knocking at
individual doors but at FAMILY doors.
Yours. Not a ‘private’ election to a
higher life but now at last we can see
that ALL are chosen to serve from the
first breath of grace ... no hallowed
moment of maturity says NOW - YOU -
SERVE GOD APART FROM
MANKIND but each of us is equally
called every day . . . mother as mother,
child as child, father as father, friend as
friend, priest as priest... all to holiness
and all a necessary part of the fabric of
life itself.
You are the seed and the inspiration.
Without you - your mother might not
be with us. The others, who do not have
children and work unstintingly for life,
have looked at you and said YES .. .
the world needs such as these and bow
to the task.”
