Carter Aide Insult Called
WASHINGTON (NC) -- Bishop James
Rausch, general secretary of the U.S.
Catholic Conference, has said comments
made by a top aide to President-elect
Jimmy Carter “can be construed as
insulting to millions of Catholics.”
The Carter aide, Greg Schneiders, 29,
told NC News Service his comments
were “poorly stated,” a “mistake” and
“ill-chosen.” He said he would contact
Bishop Rausch to put his comments in
context.
Schneiders was raised a Catholic but
says he is no longer a practicing
Catholic. He joined Carter’s campaign as
a baggage-handler last January and
became his administrative assistant and
one of his closest advisors. He is
reportedly in line to be named White
House appointments secretary.
Schneiders was the only aide with
Carter when he met with a committee
of six bishops, including Bishop Rausch,
in late August, but Schneiders says he
has never served as Carter’s “Catholic
advisor” despite jokes to that effect.
Know Your Faith Columns
To Appear In Book Form
VATICAN CITY (NC) - Two series
of columns written by liturgist Father
Joseph Champlin for the NC News
Service Know Your Faith adult
education program will appear early
next year in book form.
Father Champlin, serving now as
pastor in residence at Rome’s North
American College, said here that Ave
Maria Press in Notre Dame, Ind., will
publish his series on the Mass and on
parish life under the titles, “The New
Yet Old Mass” and “The Living Parish:
A Believing, Caring Community.”
The New York priest has been
contributing a column on liturgy for
several years to the Know Your Faith
series, an adult religious education
program which reaches a million readers
of diocesan newspapers every week.
Father Champlin’s series on the Mass,
which is currently being distributed in
column form by NC News, discusses
historical and pastoral development of
the Mass. It also offers some thoughts
about what form the Mass might take in
the future.
His “Living Parish” series, which will
also be issued in book form, was written
for Know Your Faith in recent years
and aims to give basic principles for
forming parish community.
“It would be especially helpful for
new pastors or for parish council
members,” Father Champlin said.
The liturgist is now writing a book
about his personal experience with the
Marriage Encounter movement. Entitled
“Alone No Longer,” the book is
expected to be published by Ave Maria
Press next August.
As pastor in residence at the North
American College, Father Champlin
shares his personal experiences of parish
ministry with American seminarians in
Rome.
Father Champlin has also been
involved in Rome’s large American
Catholic community. He is organizing
now a Marriage Encounter weekend for
English-speaking couples and a
“Marriage Encounter experience” for
priests.
The priests’ encounter gives clergy an
introduction to principles and
techniques of Marriage Encounter and
also tries to help them reach a clearer
understanding of their own priesthood,
Father Champlin said.

‘A Mistake’
Schneiders was quoted in a
WASHINGTON POST interview with
reporter Sally Quinn, published Nov.
19, as saying he and Carter have “talked
a lot about Catholicism. I’ve said what a
farce it was ... I think the Catholic
Church does a better job of screwing
people up than any other institution.
I’m sure there are segments of my
Catholic upbringing that may affect me
in some damaging ways.”
Bishop Rausch was out of the
country when the Schneiders interview
appeared, but he issued a
three-paragraph comment on his return.
“The comments concerning the
Catholic Church attributed to Mr.
Schneiders by the WASHINGTON
POST can be construed as insulting to
millions of Catholics,” Bishop Rausch
said.
“The United States Catholic
Conference is disturbed that a close aid
to the President-elect should apparently
hold and express such views.
“I trust that these remarks merely
reflect an isolated error of judgment and
taste on the part of one individual.”
Schneiders told NC his words were
“poorly stated,” “a mistake” and
“ill-chosen.”
“While I’m not now a practicing
Catholic, I do not harbor any animosity
or negative feelings toward the Catholic
Church,” he said.
Schneiders said his comments came
after he had responded to questions
about his father’s background as a
teacher in Jesuit schools and his own
Catholic education.
He said his critical remarks were
specifically directed at his own early
grammar school experiences in Catholic
schools.
“There was a great deal of stress on
the negative aspects of religion and sin,”
he said. Schneiders said the interview
did not include his comments that “I
thought the Church had opened up a
great deal, especially since Vatican II.”
Schneiders said that while he had no
direct experience with Catholic
grammar schools today, he understood
from his three sisters -- who are nuns --
that “it’s very different today.”
On November 17 th, Savannah’s
Nativity Parish Council of Women
hosted a special Christmas decorating
program presented by talented member
Kathy Mummery.
Guests were present from many other
parish councils throughout the diocese.
Kathy explained to those present how
they could use inexpensive materials to
make unique and beautiful Christmas
decorations for their homes.
Among the items demonstrated were:
an Advent Wreath made from all natural
and dried materials; pine cones,
styrofoam ornaments, and napkin
design candles.
Kathy concluded her program by
displaying numerous packages with
delightful and attractive gift wrapping.
This will be carried over to the
December meeting when members will
enjoy a Christmas “wrapping” party.
Each member will bring a gift for an
elderly person or shut-in of the parish
and wrap their gift using some of
Kathy’s unique methods.
Schneiders was quoted in the POST
interview as noting that Carter “refers
to me as his ‘Catholic advisor’.”
Cardinal Hits Horror Of D.C. Abortions
But Schneiders told NC that while
Carter has joked about this, he was
never a “Catholic advisor” in “a general
way or in a specific way.”
“I’m clearly not qualified to be a
‘Catholic advisor’ by the fact that I’ve
had no theological, liturgical or Church
background educationally. He (Carter)
did have several Catholic advisors who
were qualified,” Schneiders said.
Carter’s campaign coordinators from
ethnic affairs, which included contacts
with the Catholic hierarchy, were Terry
Sundy, who left his job as
administrative assistant to Father
Thomas Kelley, associate secretary of
the bishops’ conference, to join the
Carter campaign, and Sister Victoria
Mongiardo, a former staff member of
the National Center for Urban Ethnic
Affairs, an affiliate of the U.S. Catholic
Conference.
WASHINGTON (NC) - Cardinal
William W. Baum of Washington has
expressed “horror” at the abortion rate
here and called for an end to the legal
practice being given to what he said is
an “evil ideology” which has enslaved
many.
He also called for expanded programs
backing pregnancy support services such
as Birthright.
The cardinal’s comments came after
it was revealed that abortions on
Washington residents exceeded births
last year for the first time.
According to the cardinal, “Abortion
has become a multi-million dollar
business heavily supported by tax funds
(85 percent of Washington’s abortions
last year were paid for by the
Town Hall Meeting
Dec. 13 At St. James
St. James Church, Savannah, will hold a Town Hall Meeting on Monday,
December 13th. The evening will begin with Benediction in the church at
7:30 P.M. followed by a Coffee Social in the Assembly Room at 7:45 P.M.
The Town Hall Meeting is scheduled to begin at 8:00 P.M. and will last
approximately two hours.
This Town Hall Meeting is being held to inform the parishioners of the
progress made to date on the Pastoral Plan for St. James Parish which was the
result of the Self-Study conducted in the Savannah Deanery last year.
This plan should be a living, on-going process and not something
accomplished last year and now forgotten. A review of the plan will be made
and comments and suggestions from parishioners will be welcome.
government). The argument is made,”
he continued, “that it is cheaper to pay
to end the lives of unborn children than
to provide for their care after birth. And
all of this in the capital city of a nation
which pledged at the beginning of its
existence that it would protect the right
to life!”
Such a situation, Cardinal Baum
remarked, is evidence of “hostility to
the rule of God,” and is a cause for
concern over what lies ahead for both
the nation and its capital.
The growing prevalence of abortion
“evokes a profound horror before the
power of the mystery of iniquity and its
hatred of that human nature which was
assumed and rescued by God in Jesus
Christ,” the cardinal said, adding,
“Although mortally wounded by the
Lord’s victory over sin and death, the
power of evil continues its fierce efforts
to destroy every trace of the image of
God.”
“Ideas which can destroy us,” he
went on, “are gaining ground.” Among
them, he said, are:
- That the right to privacy can take
precedence over the right to life of
innocent human beings;
-That poverty can be eliminated by
eliminating the poor;
- That the value of human life can be
measured in economic terms;

- That euthanasia should be legalized.
According to Cardinal Baum, “There
has to be a change of heart among the
victims of this way of thinking. This evil
ideology now being given increasing
protection by the laws of our land has
to be rejected.”
He called for increased efforts to
