CHRISTIAN CHURCHES
Charismatic Conference July 20-24
The 1977 Conference on Charismatic
Renewal in the Christian Churches will
be held in Kansas City, Missouri, July
20-24.
The 1977 Conference is expected to
draw at least 60,000 people, which will
make it the largest ecumenical gathering
of this sort ever held. Christians from
over a dozen denominations and
fellowships will gather in Kansas City
united in their common belief in the
lordship of Jesus Christ, and in the
power of the Holy Spirit to transform
their lives.
The charismatic renewal finds
expression in all denominations and
fellowships -- Lutheran, Baptist,
Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Catholic,
United Methodist, Orthodox, and so on.
The Conference Planning Committee,
too, is composed of men who represent
every major denominational and
non-denominational group.
Under the chairmanship of Dr. Kevin
Ranaghan of the National Service
Committee of the Catholic Charismatic
Renewal, the Planning Committee to
date consists of:
Dr. Brick Bradford, General
Secretary, Presbyterian Charismatic
Communion; Rev. Larry Christenson,
Chairman, Lutheran Charismatic
Renewal Services; Rev. Ithiel
Superiors To Attend Synod
VATICAN CITY (NC) - Ten
superiors of large religious orders of
men will attend the 1977 World Synod
of Bishops here as full participants with
the approval of Pope Paul VI.
The synod to be held next fall will
discuss “catechesis in our time with
special reference to the catechesis of
children and of youth.”
Among the superiors, chosen by the
Union of Superiors General, are Jesuit
Father Pedro Arrupe, Benedictine
Abbot Primate Rembert Weakland,
Dominican Father Vincent de
Couesnongle, and Franciscan Father
Constantine Koser, superior of the
Friars Minor.
Other delegates from religious orders
are Father Eugene Cuskelly, superior of
the Sacred Heart Missionaries; Father
Francois Timmermans, head of the Holy
Ghost Fathers; Father Joseph Pfab,
superior of the Redemptorists, Salesian
Father Luigi Ricceri, Father Tarcisio
Agostini of the Verona Fathers, and
Father Joseph Hardy of the Society of
the African Missions.
Four of the superiors attended the
1974 synod on evangelization.
There are several classes of synod
participants. The majority are delegates
by national groups of bishops.
The Pope names additional
participants and the heads of the
Roman Curia, officers of the Church’s
central administrative body, also
participate.
Inaugural Benediction
WASHINGTON (NC) - Archbishop
John Roach of St. Paul-Minneapolis will
deliver the benediction at
President-elect Jimmy Carter’s
inauguration Jan. 20.
He is one of only two ministers on
the inauguration program. The other is
Methodist Bishop William Cannon of
Georgia.
Archbishop Roach said in a telephone
interview that he thought he had been
picked by Vice President-elect Walter
Mondale, a Democratic senator from
Minnesota and a personal friend.
“I guess the President-elect picked
one and the Vice President-elect picked
the other,” he said.
Archbishop Roach said he did not see
his appearance as political.
“I don’t know how you can say it’s
political at all. It’s purely a national
event, not a political event,” he said.
He said he would have offered the
prayer if asked by either party.
Archbishop Roach said he had not
yet prepared his prayer.
Clemmons, International Field

God in Christ; Dr. Howard Courtney,
V.P., International Church of the

General Chairman of Elim Fellowship;
Dr. Vinson Synan, General Secretary,
Pentecostal Holiness Church; and Rev.
Ross Whetstone, Scarritt College, a
United Methodist School.
The 1977 Conference will be
ecumenical rather than
non-denominational, with a large part of
each day devoted to smaller
denominational and fellowship
conferences sponsored by the different
religious traditions. These will include
workshops and general assemblies, as
well as seminars and teaching sessions
given by teachers well known in the
charismatic renewal. Evenings will be
devoted to conference-wide gatherings
in Arrowhead Stadium of all
participants for prayer, praise and song
as well as major addresses from
distinguished speakers.
Among the many prominent guests

Columbus Clothing Drive For C.R.S.
BY JEAN LIPAROTO
This year’s Clothing Drive in
Columbus was very successful. A word
of thanks to Mrs. Viola Hardy, President
of D.C.C.W. and all four parishes, St.
Anne’s, St. Benedict’s, Holy Family,
Our Lady of Lourdes and Fort Benning.
Mrs. Hardy wishes to thank everyone
for their cooperation and time in
collecting, sorting, packing of the
clothes. A special thanks is extended to
Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Cummings of St.
Ann’s for transporting clothing to the
central depot at Our Lady of Lourdes.
Mrs. Jean Liparoto, President of
Lourdes P.C.C.W. and the ladies of that
council worked hard for long hours
arranging clothing for packing. Forty
cartons were prepared.
Mrs. Hardy and the Deanery Council
are ever grateful to Mr. Leroy Burnham
of Burnham’s Van Service for
transporting the clothing to C.R.S.
warehousesjn Queens, New York.
It is very likely C.R.S. needs this
clothing urgently for such people as the
earthquake victims in Turkey. The
C.R.S. is the Good Samaritan replacing
exhausted supplies overseas.
A final word of thanks is due to all
the Catholic priests of Columbus and
Fort Benning for their help and
cooperation, and special thanks is due
to Fr. Michael J. O’Keefe for his
newspaper articles and radio tapes
which made this year’s clothing drive
public.

Savannah’s St. Mary’s School
To Be Closed At End Of Year
EAGLE SCOUT - Eddie
Maischaider, son of Mr. and Mrs.
J.A. Maischaider of Albany, was
awarded the rank of Eagle Scout
at the December Court of Honor.
He is a member of Boy Scout
Troop 3, sponsored by St. Teresa’s
Catholic Church.
Savannah’s St. Mary School will be
closed at the end of the current school
year.
Announcement of the closing was
made by Savannah’s Bishop Raymond
W. Lessard at a Tuesday evening (Jan. 4)
meeting of pastors, principals and
School Board chairmen of Savannah’s
Catholic schools.
The bishop’s statement follows:
“After lengthy study, we find it
necessary to close St. Mary’s School at
the end of the current school year. This
decision became necessary, not only
because of our inability to obtain the
services of Religious Sisters to staff the
school, but also because of the
limitations of the existing plant for
present day educational requirements,
as well as our inability to find suitable
alternate facilities.
“One of the recommendations of the
Savannah Self-Study is, ‘that each
Catholic child in the deanery shall have
the opportunity to attend a Catholic
school, no matter to which parish he or
she belongs.’ In accord with that
recommendation, all Catholic students
presently enrolled in St. Mary’s School
will be assigned and assimilated in other
Catholic schools of the city, if they so
desire. This assimilation process will be
directed by the Diocesan School Office
in conjunction with the school
principals.
“If the non-Catholic students
presently enrolled wish to attend a
Catholic school next year, they may
make application to the school in their
district during the Spring registration
and will be accepted on a space available
basis.”
