MARY BLANKS, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Blanks made her
First Communion in July. She is shown with Father Clement Borchers,
pastor of Sacred Heart Parish and Sr. Loretta Marie Aver who prepared
her for the Sacrament. Sister Loretta Marie, S. C. is from Seton High
School, Cincinnati, and she spent the summer working in the Lyons area.
The Quotable Pope
“The Church has
declared herself the servant of
humanity at the very time
when her teaching role and
her pastoral government have,
by reason of the Council’s
solemnity, assured greater
splendor and vigor; the idea
of service has been central.”
— December 7,1965
“Since charity banishes
fear, it seems more
appropriate now to preserve
the faith by means of an
office for promoting
doctrine. Although it will still
correct errors and gently
recall those in error to moral
excellence, new emphasis is
to be given to preaching the
gospel.”
“No more war. War never
again ... If you wish to be
brothers, let the arms fall
from your hands. One cannot
love while holding offensive
arms.”
October 4, 1965
United Nations
“Respect for life, even
with regard to the great
problem of birth, must find
your assembly its highest
affirmation and its most
reasoned defense. You must
strive to multiply bread so
that it suffices for the tables
of mankind, and not rather
favor an artificial control of
birth, which would be
irrational, in order to
diminish the number of
guests at the banquet of life.”
“We must accustom
ourselves better to know,
respect and love others.”
“Charity enables us to
acquire a better awareness of
the very depths of our unity.
At the same times, it makes
us suffer more painfully the
present impossibility of
seeing this unity expand into
concelebration. And it spurs
us on to do everything
possible to hasten ,the advent
of the day of the Lord.”
“We will continue to
denouce unjust economic
inequalities between rich and
poor and abuses of authority
and administration against
you and the community. We
will continue to encourage
the designs and programs of
the responsible authorities
and of the international
organizations, as also those of
the prosperous nations, in
favor of the developing
peoples.”
“In labor, it is man who
comes first. Never again will
•work be superior to the
workers. Never again will
work be against the worker,
but always work will be for
the worker. Work will be in
the service of man, of every
man and of all men.”
“In fraternal frankness,
we do not consider that the
question of membership of
the Catholic Church in the
world council is so mature
that a positive answer could
or should be given.”
“Such situations (racism
and discrimination)
constitute a manifest and
inadmissible affront to the
fundamental rights of the
human person and to the laws
of civilized living.”
“A desire for material
goods must neither harden
our hearts nor make us
underrate spiritual values. Do
not close your limited circle
for the sake of selfish
satisfaction.”
“While we are saying
these simple and subline
words, we have around us --
we almost feel it -- all the
Chinese people wherever they
may be.”
“The Church is made for
the world, the world of
today.”
‘ ‘Excessive economic,
social and cultural
inequalities among peoples
arouse tensions and conflicts
and are a danger to peace . . .
To wage war on misery and
to struggle against injustice is
to promote, along with
improved conditions, the
human and spiritual progress
of all men, and therefore the
common good of humanity.
Peace cannot be limited to a
mere absence of war, the
result of an ever precarious
balance of forces.”
“Revolution produces
new injustices, throws more
elements out of balance and
brings on new disasters.”
“Superfluous wealth of
rich countries should be
placed at the service of poor
nations, and this can only be
done by concerted planning.”
“We hope to meet
(Cardinal Pizzardo) after
death, which for us cannot be
far awaay, in the glory of Our
Lord Jesus Christ.”

Lyons-Vidalia Activities
The Montgomery-Wheeler County
Training Center for the Mentally
Retarded had two special volunteers
during the month of July. Sister Mary
Weatherly, a Speech Therapist and
Sister Sara Jean Meinert, an experienced
teacher, came from Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania. They are Sisters of Divine
Providence with their headquarters in
Pittsburgh.
Sister Mary studied at Catholic
University in Washington, D.C. At
present she is involved in a Speech and
Language Therapy Program sponsored
by the Federal Government involving
three Pittsburgh schools.
Sister did an in-depth assessment
and evaluation of the children to
determine their needs and their
etttcable possibilities.
Sister Sara Jean studied at
Duquesne University and the University
of Notre Dame and received her
Master’s degree at the University of
Detroit. Sister assisted Sister Mary in
working with the Center children on a
one to one basis as much as possible.
The St. Vincent de Paul Society of
Pittsburgh provided the air fare for the
sisters to come and the Catholic Social
Services of Toombs-Montgomery
Counties provided their summer
subsistence.
Alice Winterhalter, an auxiliary of
the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati
spent her summer vacation as a
volunteer at the Montgomery-Wheeler
County Training Center. Alice is
studying dietetics in Cincinnati. She
became involved in snack planning,
purchasing and teaching at the Center.
Alice deeply enjoyed her experience and
only wished she could have prolonged
her stay.
SR. MARIE AMADEA
(at left) was honored at a
reception at the Governor’s
mansion in Atlanta. She was given
a citation by Mrs. George Busbee
(R) for exceptional volunteer
services in the Lyons area.

at the Lyons Christian Center to honor Sister Camille Collini, C.S.J. and
Sister Loretta, F.S. P.A. who will be leaving the Statesboro Deanery.
Sister Camille will relocate in Augusta and Sr. Loretta will study in
Washington State. Both have been outstanding workers in the Statesboro
Deanery. Priests of the Deanery are pictured concelebrating Mass in upper
