Committee of the St. Francis Xavier Home and School Association,
coordinated the event which was held at the Convent on Richmond
Street. The Sisters, who staff St. Francis Xavier School, are pictured

Holy Spirit Lenten Program
The Wednesday evening Lenten
Program continued at Holy Spirit
(Macon) with a program on “Tradition
and Evangelization” by Father Douglas
Clark, associate pastor of St. Teresa’s
Church (Albany). “Evangelization is a
witnessing,” Father Clark explained,
“not only by words (or preaching) but
by our lives.”
Everyone in the Christian
Community is called to evangelization:
to witness to the gospel through their
actions.
Father Clark quoted from the Acts of
the Apostles (2:42) which told of the
four elements essential to a truly
Christian life: “And they continued
steadfastly in the teaching of the
apostles (study of God’s word through
the gospels) and in communion
(fellowship or communal life) of the
breaking of bread (Eucharist) and in
prayer.”
“This sums up,” Father Clark
continued, “the true Tradition of the
Church (the totality of God’s Salvation
of mankind) which has been obscured
by the many traditions or customs.”
Father explained to the audience that
the changes in some of the traditions
since Vatican II were necessary so that
all could more clearly see (and return
to) the Tradition.
The weekly programs will be
concluded with next week’s talk on
“Evangelization and Personal Sacrifice”
by Father Kiel, Pastor of Saint Peter
Claver Church (Macon).
MACON-MAY 12
Marriage Workshop
A workshop on Preparation for
Marriage is scheduled for Saturday, May
12th, at Mount de Sales High School in
Macon. The workshop is being planned
in connection with the presentation of
the new Marriage Guidelines, which will
become effective in the Diocese on June
1st.
The workshop program will be geared
to provide leadership training for those
already involved in Marriage
Preparation, as well as individuals and
couples who might work well in this
area. Speakers will address themselves to
four basic topics: Communication,
Family Living, Sexuality, and
Sacramentality. In addition, materials
and programs now being used and
marketed will be available for discussion
and review.

Effective programs for Marriage
Preparation will be receiving extra
emphasis in the Diocese as the new
Guidelines are implemented. One
requirement of the new policy is that all
programs should include reflection on
the nature and sacramentality of
marriage, married love and family life,
marital responsibilities, communication
within marriage, and other practical
considerations such as planning for the
wedding ceremony.
The workshop is being sponsored by
the Diocesan Family Life Office. Any
questions concerning the schedule and
attendance may be referred to Mary
Kay Persse, at St. John’s Center,
Grimball Point Road, Savannah, Ga.

Mission At St. Anthony’s
New Church-New South
BY GILL BROWN
Five representatives from the
Savannah Diocese attended the first of
three Saturday conferences on “A New
Church, a New South” at the Urban
Life Center, Georgia State University, in
Atlanta on March 24th. Sponsored by
the Georgia Interchurch Association and
the Department of Urban Community
Services at Georgia State, the series is
designed to help Church membership to
assess conditions in Georgia and the
South during the next decade and
beyond, and to develop ways in which
the Church can take an active role in
shaping the society of the future.
The five representatives from
Savannah were Sister Mary Laurent
Duggan, C.S.J., Chancery
Administrator, Sister M. Julian Griffin,
V.S.C., Vicar for Social Affairs, Father
John Kenneally, Pastor of Holy Spirit
Church in Macon, Mrs. Pat Thomas of
Macon and Mrs. Gillian Brown of the
Social Affairs Department in Savannah.
The first Saturday session concerned
“The Economy.” A keynote address on
“The Moral Imperatives of a Changing
Economy in Georgia and the South”
was given by Dr. Stephen J. Brannen,
Chairman of the Division of Agricultural
Economics and the University of
Georgia. Subjects covered during the
day were “Economic Growth and
Development,” “Working Conditions
and Employment,” “Farming and Small
Business,” and “Resource Distribution
and Poverty.” Participants representing
a number of different church groups
shared their views during discussion
sessions which followed presentations
made by a panel of experts in these
fields.
The two remaining conferences in the
series will address conditions relating to
“The Society” (April 21st) and “The
Environment” (May 19th.)

ST. BENEDICT HONORED - Following tradition a Mass was offered
on the 21st of March, in honor of St. Benedict, the founder of the
Benedictine Order. The Mass celebrated at Benedictine Military School
was attended by the students, faculty and priests of the diocese and the
principals of the parochial schools. Bishop Raymond Lessard was the
principle celebrant and homilist. The Benedictine priests and the priests of
the diocese participated in the concelebrated Mass in Savannah.
YOUTH RETREAT - On Saturday and Sunday,
March 24th and 25th, forty-eight young people ages
twelve to twenty and eight adults from Douglas,
Alapaha, Fitzgerald, Alma, Ocilla, and Willacoochee
attended an over-night retreat at Little Ocmulgee State
Park in McRae, Ga. Mr. Tim Welch, Director of Youth
Ministry for the Diocese of Savannah and Maureen
O’Brien of Savannah directed the activities of the
retreat which was organized by Sister Cecilia Willis, S.
A., coordinator of the Religious Education program of
the area. This was the first opportunity for most of the
young people who attended, to participate in a youth
retreat. New friendships were formed as they got in
touch with themselves and with God as they had never
been touched before. The youths had met each other
the night before when they attended the Youth Rally
conducted by the Oblate Missionaries, Revs. Robert
Schwenker and Anthony Rigoli from Washington D. C.
In spite of the unseasonable cold weather that
weekend, all the young people thoroughly enjoyed the
experience and are looking forward to the next. Rev.
Edwin J. Hayes, O.M.I. is pastor at St. Paul’s, Douglas.
