CATHOLIC HONORED FOR 20-YEARS SERVICE
PAGE 3—The Southern Cross, April 19,1979
Jewish Congregation Honors Mrs. Wm. Lynch
Mrs. William J. Lynch, President of
the Catholic Woman’s Club of
Savannah, received a very singular honor
(April 6) when Rabbi Saul J. Rubin of
Mickve Isreal Temple, and his
congregation, paid tribute to her on her
retirement as executive secretary for the
temple in a most impressive ceremony
of Praise and Tribute, including
Scripture reading in which all
participated.
Of her twenty years of service as their
Executive Secretary Rabbi Rubin said:
“In a world where there is so much
division and dissension, it is elevating to
know that people of different faiths can
come to trust and love each other so
LOURDES 9 URSULINES
fully.”
In a bulletin of the Temple he said:
“To the four Rabbis she has assisted
as Executive Secretary, she has been
friend, memory bank, counselor and
guide. Her knowledge of the people and
the traditions of Savannah and
Savannah’s Jews has contributed to the
decision-making process. Where the
Rabbis chose wisely among alternatives,
you can be assured Mrs. Lynch was
consulted.” Rabbi Rubin said: “We honor
her most as a person of deep religious
faith, whose high values and standards
are expressive of her reverence for her
Church. Roman Catholicism never
produced a truer living witness. We
salute Rosemary Lynch who has earned
a place of honor and affection in Mickve
Isreal.”
Rabbi Rubin invited Msgr. Daniel J.
Bourke, Rev. Patrick O’Brien who, is
Moderator of the Catholic Womajn’s
Club of Savannah, and Rev. Thomas
Peyton, Assistant Pastor of her Parish,
Blessed Sacrament, who also expressed
their praise.

Homecoming In Columbus; Mother General Visits
Mother De Sales
Our Lady of Lourdes Convent,
Columbus, was visited last month by
Rev. Mother de Sales, first Mother
General of the Irish Ursuline Union. As
she had been assigned to Our Lady of
Lourdes up to 1973, the visit was a
happy reunion for her, the community
and members of the parish with whom
she had worked as Religious Education
coordinator.
Our Lady of Lourdes School
welcomed her with a varied and
interesting program, and the CCD
classes greeted her with excerpts from
their Religious Education program in
song, mime and project.
On these occasions, and on meeting
the Parish Council, Theresians,
Legionaries of Mary, Prayer and other
groups Mother de Sales spoke with
feeling of time spent recently in the
Third World, when she visited four
Ursuline Houses in Kenya. While her
audiences were obviously moved by her
account of the deprivation of people
living on the knife edge of starvation,
Mother de Sales expressed her deep
appreciation of what she described as “a
vibrant parish” in Our Lady of Lourdes.
She was as favorably impressed by
the programs in Religion as by the full
liturgical and paraliturgical life of the
parish, and she put on record her
awareness of a spirit of appreciation and
cooperation between pastor, sisters and
parishioners.
Her visit was regretfully curtailed by
her forthcoming visit to Rome, where
she has been fortunate in receiving an
invitation to a conference of Ursuline
Superiors. Her horizon has been greatly
widened since the formation of the
Union, with houses in Ireland, Wales,
Kenya and Georgia. She asks for prayers
that God may bless this wide field with
vocations in each of the countries she
has visited.

Terrorism, Poverty Targets Of Pope John Paul
(Continued from page 1)
take into account the causes behind the
violence. He berated social progress
“which has not filled the gap between
the classes, which has not distributed
work and prosperity equitably, which
has not resolved the problems of the
poor.”
He also called the conditions of
children a serious social problem. “How
many children still suffer!” he wrote.
Turning to issues of labor, the pope
wrote of the problems of migrants,
industrial laborers and field workers.
The concept of work implies more
than just supplying each person with a
job, he said. “It is necessary to eliminate
the effects of obsessive and repetitive
labor.”
Of farm work, he said: “For the field
worker it is necessary to act everywhere,
immediately and in depth. It is
necessary to put into practice bold and
profoundly innovative transformations.
It is necessary to undertake urgent
reforms without waiting any longer.”
The pope suggested, as he had during
his trip to Mexico last January, that
land reform should be part of the
solution.
“It cannot be forgotten that the
provisions to be adopted must be
adequate to the real necessities,” he
wrote. “The church defends the
legitimate right of private property, yes,
but she teaches with no less clarity that
above all private property always bears a
social obligation, so that the goods serve
that general purpose which God gave
them.”
He decried human exploitation,
saying, “it is not just, it is not human, it
is not Christian.”
CONFIRMATION IN JESUP -- Bishop Raymond W. Lessard conferred
the Sacrament of Confirmation on thirteen members of St. Joseph’s
Church in Jesup and St. Christopher’s Church in Baxley in a joint
