DCCW Notes

A Worldwide Problem .. .
It is a sad and devastating fact
that teenage pregnancy has become a
world wide problem. If one were to
attempt to cite all the reasons for
this the list would be interminable.
Indeed, the primary cause for this
tragedy, the one that makes all
others seem secondary, is that
chastity has been down played as
being out of date, unnecessary, and
impractical. A representative at the
recent International Conference on
Venereal Disease, Family Planning
and Human Sexuality had this to
say: “No one wants to be told these
days what to do and not do.
Whenever I asked other participants
about values, replies always escaped
into presenting options in the naive
hope that the young would choose
the best option, given all the
possibilities. Never was chastity
before marriage and fidelity within
the marital bond even mentioned at
the conference. In fact, I cannot
remember that the words ‘Marriage’
or ‘spouses’ were even used. The
terminology was always ‘sexual
partners’.”
Unfortunately, it is the almost
exclusive and godless Planned
Parenthood mentality that is
prevailing. The young cannot and
must not be asked to contain their
impulses in matters of sex. They
must not be expected to discipline
themselves or to lead a life of
continence. They must have
protection for unwanted pregnancies,
and should that protection fail they
must consider abortion which is all
too readily available.
A university professor told, those
assembled that virginity is fast
• becoming a thing of the past. A
director of an abortion clinic
reported that “97% of all the girls
who come to our clinic for family
planning and birth control counseling
already are sexually active.” A
sociologist stated that sex education
should start with teaching the
parents and teachers the hard facts of
life in this immoral age. They should
insist that their daughters and their
sons protect themselves and their
partners if they are going to indulge
in sex.
Father Paul Marx, president of the
Human Life Center in Collegeville,
Minnesota, had this to say, “one
comes away from this session on sex
with the overwhelming conviction
that those who believe in Christianity
and in man’s destiny beyond this
world have no time to lose. Parents
and clergy will inevitably despair
unless they believe deeply in the God
who made us all.”
Unquestionably, young people
need to hold sex in reverence. They
need to understand that their bodies
are maturing at a much younger age
today due to better diets and
physical care leaving a wide gulf
between physical and emotional
maturity. They need to be
encouraged to direct their energies in
moral pursuits to stimulate their
minds, and strengthen their wills so
that they may always look upon
chastity in a Christian light.
It was G. K. Chesterton who
wrote “All healthy men, ancient and
modem, Eastern and Western, know
that there is a certain fury in sex that
we cannot afford to inflame, and
a certain mystery and awe must ever
surround it if we are to remain sane.”

based on a report of Father Paul
Marx).
