Fr. Wellmeier Marks 25th Anniversary
ST CLARE’S (ALBANY)
EVANGELIZATION CENTER - Children of the
parents who come to the Center two days a week
for a physical fitness program which includes
figure analysis, diet counseling and fitness
activities. While the program is going on these
children participate in a Bible class.
Charter For Science Club
Columbus’ Pacelli High School
Science Club recently received their
charter from the Georgia Junior
Academy of Science. Pacelli High is
the 32nd School to join that
organization.
Officers for the current year are:
Scott Davis, President; Steve Latorre,
Vice-President; Lance Rader,
Secretary; and Mike Raben,
Treasurer. Other members include
David Jackson, George Bennett,
Dexter Jackson, Joseph Booth, David
Price, Chris Owen, Keith Bernstein,
and Mark Shumate. Mr. Chris
Spraggins, Science Department
Chairman, is the sponsor.
The organization has been very
active this year, having hosted guest
speakers such as Mr. Floyd Cook
from the Forestry Service, Mr. Dick
Collier from the Extension Service
Office, Mr. Carl Divinyi from the
Fort Benning Environmental Service,
and Mrs. Beetel from the Floyd
Patterson Planetarium.
The group has taken several field
trips within the local area and is
currently planning an overnight trip
to the N.A.S.A. Space Center in
Huntsville, Alabama. The Science
Club also sponsors the Pacelli Science
Fair, one of just twenty state
certified region fairs.
Mark Shumate, a member of the
club, was recently elected as a state
officer at the annual G.J.A.S.
convention in Athens, Georgia.
COLUMBUS YOUTH RETREAT - These Holy
Family Parish, CCD, School of Religion students
participated in a Youth Retreat at The Blessed
Trinity Shrine Retreat, Holy Trinity Alabama, on
May 2nd. Students enjoyed numerous discussion
groups and outdoor activities involving trust
games and a myriad of comradery exercises.
Dinner was followed by a summary of the days
events, and a moving musical composition of
songs and prayer. Father William O’Neill, Pastor,
Holy Family, celebrated Mass in the Retreat
Chapel.
JEFFERSON AWARD -
Sister Celine Fahy, Director of
the Catholic Social Apostolate
in Augusta, was recently
presented the Jefferson Award
for outstanding Public service
performed for the citizens of
C.S.R.A. Sister was presented
the Medallion on WRDW-TV’s
midday show.
HIGHEST HONORS AT AQUINAS - Brother Paul Phillipp,
Principal of Aquinas High School, Augusta, has announced the two
students who have achieved the highest academic averages for the
class of 1981. Named Valedictorian is Janet Strassner. Janet, the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Strassner, will attend Fruman
University in Greenville, South Carolina where she has been
awarded the Furman Scholar Scholarship. Named Salutatorian is
Robert Harmon. Robert, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gene S. Harmon,
will attend Augusta College where he has been named an Augusta
College Faculty Scholar. Both students have attended Aquinas High
School for four years and have been commended by the National
Merit Scholarship Program.

THE SISTERS of Albany’s St. Clare’s Evangelization Center
invited the children and parents of the community to take part in
an Easter Egg Hunt. The activity was a beautiful experience for all
who took part.
FIRST COMMUNION BANNER ~ The second
grade class of St. Francis Xavier School,
Brunswick, under the direction of teacher, Mrs.
Marge Kelso and Art Instructors Darlene
Finnegan and Bobbi Blaschke, prepared for their
1st Communion on May 3rd by designing and
making a banner for the altar. The theme of the
banner “We Share the Bread pf Life’’ followed
the title of their religion booklet for 1st

Michael J. Johnson served as
master of ceremonies and William
Stone conducted the “roast-toast”
program which featured Frank Davis,
president of the parish council,
Father Boland, Father Otterbein,
Mrs. John Wolfe, Mrs. Jack Hesse,
Mrs. Jack Hall, Woody Kirksey and
Dr. Edward Armstrong.
A slide presentation narrated and
edited by Father Jerry McCarthy and
musical presentations by Sister
Bernadette and Mrs. Kathy Vamell
highlighted the program.
Father Wellmeier was honored
with gifts from the parish council,
Council of Catholic Women, Catholic
Youth Organization and Youth
Education, the faculty and board of
St. Teresa’s School. A special gift
with the blessing of Pope John Paul
was presented by Father McCarthy
on behalf of Father Douglas Clark,
who is studying in Rome.
Robert McCormack, St. Teresa
parishioner recently invested as a
Knight of the Sovereign Military
Order of Malta, made his first public
appearance in his robes since his
investiture at Father Wellmeier’s
Mass of Thanksgiving.

Marking his 2 5 th year of
priesthood, Rev. Herbert Joseph
Wellmeier, pastor of St. Teresa’s
Church, Albany, concelebrated a
Mass of Thanksgiving with the Most
Rev. Andrew McDonald, Bishop of
Little Rock, Ark., and Rev. Jerry
McCarthy, associate pastor, at St.
Teresa’s Church, May 8. Michael
Cerroni served as deacon and in
attendance were 21 diocesan priests,
relatives from Ohio and parishioners.
Ordained May 26, 1956, by the
Most Rev. A. G. Cicognani in
Worthington, Ohio, Father Wellmeier
plans to recelebrate his Silver Jubilee
in Dayton, May 30, among his
hometown friends and relatives.
Following the Mass at St. Teresa’s
last Friday evening, approximately
500 parishioners and special guests
attended a dinner-dance at the
Downtowner Motor Inn where the
honoree was feted with a
“roast-toast” and was presented with
gifts by varied parish organizations.
Special guests attending included
Bishop McDonald, Father Kevin
Boland, Father Joseph Otterbein, Mr.
and Mrs. Bemie Ervin, Mr. and Mrs.
Bill Beidner, Mrs. Marie Owen, Miss
Lynn Ervin, members of Father
Wellmeier’s family, all of Dayton;
Sister Perpetua, coordinator of the
Sisters of the Most Precious Blood in
Albany, Sister Pauline, principal of
St. Teresa’s School; Sister Ruth
Marie, coordinator of the Religious
Education for Franciscan Missions in
South Georgia.
