DCCW Notes
Bridges To The Local Affiliate ..
by Mary Jo Louth
Guest Columnist
So often local affiliates are dubious
about the necessity of the Deanery,
Diocesan, and National Councils.
These Councils act as bridges
connecting the women in the
individual parishes with other women
in the city, state, country, and world.
They provide a flow of
communication through reports,
meetings, newsletters, CATHOLIC
WOMAN magazine, and conventions.
The local PCCW can do much on its
own but unless it opens itself to the
world around it, the members soon
become very complacent and critical.
Cliques form and the PCCW falls
apart.
The importance of keeping in
touch with women who share the
common goal of spreading God’s love
cannot be underestimated. PCCW’s
need each other for support. This can
be compared so well to Family Life.
Members of a family must be open to
each other, respond to each other’s
needs and feelings. The love that they
share cannot stay within the home or
it will become stale. Their love must
flow to the community. As a result,
the family is nourished and their
commitment to each other grows
more deeply.
The Deanery, Diocesan, and
National Councils bring women and
moderators together to share ideas, to
air problems, and to rededicate
themselves to serving God with the
many talents He has given them.
Communication between councils on
all levels sparks enthusiasm and leads
to a better understanding of the
various programs.
One of the tools of communication
is the Diocesan convention. The love,
peace and joy that radiates on that
weekend fills women with fond
memories of their sisters in Christ, and
an eagerness to put the knowledge
obtained into action in their local
affiliates. A convention creates unity
within the Deanery that hosts it and
unity within the Diocese. It unifies
them to National with representatives
from NCCW attending and speaking
on the various programs in which they
participate.
The unity that is brought about by
the tools of communication forms a
federation of ten million women, the
National Council of Catholic Women.
Because many local councils in the
United States join together, NCCW is
able for example, to contribute one
quarter of a million dollars to the
Works of Peace each year. It has
provided thirty-five water tanks for
the people in Africa and milk cows for
India. NCCW offers women many
opportunities to act as responsible and (
intelligent daughters of the Church.
So much more can be
accomplished when local affiliates
venture across the bridges and reach
out to love one another as members of
the body of Christ.

FATHER SEIKEL MEMORIAL AWARD - When Aquinas High
School opened its doors in 1957, it was decided by Reverend Ralph E.
Seikel, moderator of the school, to name a boy and a girl each year to

until the year 1965 when the award was named in honor of Father
Seikel who was being transferred from the school. This tradition has
continued through the years. This year, however, for the first time,
the award will be given as a Memorial to Father Seikel who died on
June 4, 1980. The recipients of the coveted award will be Susan Beier
,and Kevin Skedsvold. Susan, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard
Beier is the ninth child of this family to graduate from Aquinas High
School. All have been honor students. Susan is president of the
National Honor Society ; captain of the Cheerleaders; Faculty editor
of the Aquinas Yearbook; Sacristan and the recipient of the

Engaged Encounter
The third Engaged Encounter weekend for 1981 was held at Middle
Georgia College in Cochran on May 8-9-10. The following comments from
engaged couples attending probably express the value of the weekend best:
“This weekend has brought great insight to us, and brought us closer. It did
this by making us think and prepare ourselves, which we might not have done on
our own.”
“This weekend showed us how to be open and honest withot being afraid.”
“We learned about the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives, and about unity and
how to keep it in our lives ...”
“To be able to see God in the couples here opens the door of honesty in our
ability to dialog with each other.”
“A lot of questions we had talked about ambiguously beore the weekend,
were more concretely set out for us to handle.”
“This weekend really hit home as to God’s role in our lives, and how He will
help us in attaining our goals.”
One of the goals of the Engaged Encounter is for every couple to experience a
weekend. The weekend schedule is attempting to accommodate everyone, with
more weekends scheduled during the first six months of 1981, to meet the needs
of couples who are planning spring and summer weddings. Since the weekends for
the remainder of 1981 are more wide-spread, engaged couples are encouraged to
register early for the weekend of their choice.
