Christ Needs Your Hands
Among the stories told of World
War II is that of a German village
which had had as its proudest
possession a beautiful statue which
previously had adorned its town
square. The end of the war found the
statue, like the town, devasted.
When the American soldiers who
were quartered there offered their
assistance to the desolate villagers, the
villagers were quick to accept. Oddly
enough, the need which they wished
fulfilled did not include food, shelter,
clothing, seed, farm equipment or any
of the necessities ordinarily required
in restoration. All the Germans asked
of the Americans was help in
reconstructing their beautiful statue.
Then began the long and arduous
task of restoration — first finding the
pieces which had been shattered and
scattered, and then fitting them into
their places.
At long last, the mission was almost
accomplished. The statue was again
intact except for two pieces, which
the soldiers had been unable to find or
replace. The Americans carefully
draped their work for a special
unveiling when all the town’s people
could be present.
At the unveiling ceremony, the
mayor of the town pulled the cord
which caused the drape to fall,
revealing a beautiful statue of a
handless Christ. At the foot of the
statue, a soldier had penned a sign
which read: “I have no hands. Won’t
you, please, lend me yours?” Thus,
through the hands of the town’s
people, given to a handless Christ, a
German village was restored!
Today, some four decades later, in
that German village, as well as in
villages, cities, states, and countries all
over the world, the call is the same:
Christ needs your hands — He has no
hands but yours!
Christ needs your hands in church
communities. In every parish,
deanery, diocese, archdiocese and
province throughout the nation Christ
needs your hands to accomplish his
work through evangelization,
scripture study, liturgical planning
and participation in any number of
privileged ministries.
Christ needs your hands in every
type of community service. He needs
them in volunteer work at hospitals,
nursing homes, retirement homes. He
needs them in schools, at park and
recreation boards, at the polls on
election days. He needs them in
driving the aged, the handicapped and
others to polls, to doctors’
appointments, to shopping.
Christ needs your hands in family
affairs. He needs them in hospitals,
clinics and abortion mills all over the
United States to stop the slaughtering
of the least of his brethren. He needs
them to work against other types of
child abuse. He needs them to work
with youth and to reach out to the
aged, the lonely, the oppressed.
Christ needs your hands in
international affairs in India, in
Cambodia and in most of the Third
World countries, to help relieve the
members of his family from the pangs
of hunger and thirst. He needs them to
further the Madonna Plan and other
Works of Peace throughout the world.
Christ needs your hands in
organizational services in planning,
organizing and implementing
leadership programs and programs in
parliamentary procedure. He needs
them to service all the NCCW
Commissions and, especially, to do
the work of Martha when the
members of His family assemble in
efforts to further his work.
Christ needs your hands in
legislative affairs in the cities to plug
for better housing for the elderly; in
state legislatures to promote the
passage of a Human Life Amendment
to the Constitution. He needs your
hands on numerous boards to work
for the enactment of improved Social
Security laws; and, finally, Christ
needs your hands on Capitol Hill in
lobbying for our convictions.
Christ has no hands, but yours.
Won’t you, please, lend them to him?
