St. Joseph's Honors Mrs. Rosa Shaheen
Mrs. Rosa Shaheen was honored by St. Joseph’s,
Macon, at a parish “thank you” party. Mrs. Shaheen has
been kindergarten teacher for 24 years at St. Joseph’s
School.
The program which starred 24 former students, opened
with a lively rendition of “My Wild Irish Rose” by Jack
Harshbarger and Dan Cogan. Jimmy Cassidy Jr. was
Master of Ceremonies. The former students shared their
heartfelt and humorous remembrances and laughter won
out over tears.
Father John Cuddy, pastor of St. Joseph’s, and Father
Bede Lightner both took part in the program. Fr. Cuddy
sang a touching German love song to Rosa. Sister Mary
Edward and the Home and School Association added their
thanks.
Remembering Hiroshima
And Nagasaki
They came from many areas of Georgia. Americus,
Atlanta, Macon, Roberta and Warner Robins. People who
wanted to be together to pray, reflect and repent for the
events that took place 39 years ago on August 6th and
9th.
The Pax Christi group in Warner Robins was host for a
Prayer Vigil that was held on Saturday evening and
Sunday morning, August 4th & 5th, at Sacred Heart
Church. Pax Christi is the Catholic Peace Movement in the
United States and throughout the world and many such
vigils were held at Catholic Churches and other
institutions around the world.
Dr. Gordon Zahn, Professor Emeritus at the University
of Massachusetts in Boston, gave the principal address. Dr.
Zahn is the author of “In Solitary Witness,” a book about
Franz Jaegerstaetter, who refused to serve in Hitler’s army
during World War II.
After an hour of prayer and song, there were hourly
meditations throughout the night, ending in the morning
with most of the people walking to the main gate of
Robins AFB, and holding a prayer service. This was an
action to show their “profound sorrow” for the events of
Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
After the vigil at the base, they returned to the parish
hall for an Agape breakfast. Agape - meaning the truest
sense of love, unconditional love, that Jesus asks us to
have for our fellowman - seemed a most appropriate way
to end this prayerful, reflective event. In the words of our
Holy Father, “To remember Hiroshima is to work
untiringly for peace.”
