Movie Reviews And Classifications
NEW YORK (NC) - The following are synopses of
movie reviews prepared by the staff of the U.S. Catholic
Conference Department of Communication.
“CLOAK AND DAGGER” (UNIVERSAL)
A lonely young boy escapes from reality by playing
usuperspy, but when reality obtrudes and he witnesses a
^murder, nobody will believe him — except the killers.
Entertaining and fast-paced. Though it’s aimed at younger
viewers, its violence makes it questionable for pre-teens.
The U.S. Catholic Conference has classified it A-II —
adults and adolescents. The Motion Picture Association of
America rating is PG —parental guidance suggested.
“DREAMSCAPE” (FOX)
An absurd melodrama with a hero who enters the
nightmares of disturbed people and performs instant
repairs on their wounded psyches. A torrid but relatively
restrained love scene makes this mature fare. The U.S.
Catholic Conference has classified it A-III — adults. The
industry rating is PG-13 — parents are strongly cautioned
to give special guidance for attendance of children under
13.
‘RED DAWN” (MGM-UA)
Preposterous and heavy-handed war movie. Because of
its violence and its glorification of the macho rather than
patriotism, it has been classified A-III — adults — by the
U.S. Catholic Conference. The industry rating is PG-13 —
parents are strongly cautioned to give special guidance for
attendance of children under 13.
“SHEENA” (COLUMBIA)
Ludicrous jungle epic about a female Tarzan. Because
of its extensive, obviously exploitative nudity, it has been
classified 0 — morally offensive — by the U.S. Catholic
Conference. The industry rating is PG — parental guidance
suggested.
“THE WOMAN IN RED” (ORION)
An ill-conceived and clumsily executed attempt to
recast a French farce about adultery in an American mold.
Because of its nudity and its disregard of moral
considerations, it has been classified 0 — morally
offensive — by the U.S. Catholic Conference. The industry
rating is PG-13 — parents are strongly cautioned to give
special guidance for attendance of children under 13.

TV FILM FARE
Sunday, Sept. 9, 9-11:39 p.m. EDT (ABC) -- “Coal
Miner’s Daughter” (1980) - The life of country-western
singer Loretta Lynn (played in warm and winning fashion
by Sissy Spacek) is presented with an irresistible blend of
sincerity and feeling. Some may consider these virtues
old-fashioned, but that in no way detracts from the
enjoyment of this pleasant and touching film. Some frank
language about sex and a wedding night sequence,
although played with great restraint, would rule out
younger children. The U.S. Catholic Conference
classification is A-II - adults and adolescents The Motion
Picture Association of America rating is PG — parental
guidance.
