ARCIC II Meeting
Progress Towards Agreement On Justification
Augusta Dedication
Sunday, September 16
St. Andrew's, Reidsville, Dedication September 16
through faith, good works or a mixture of the two.
In September 1983, theologians participating in a U.S.
national Lutheran-Roman Catholic dialogue made a
landmark agreement on justification, declaring in part that
God alone “forgives sins and makes us truly righteous.”
In that joint declaration, the theologians rejected the
idea that humans can simply earn or “merit” salvation by
their actions, but they also rejected the notion that good
works flowing from faith are totally irrevelant to God’s
saving plan.
The Durham meeting also began studying growth in
reconciliation and the stages on the way to full
communion. Preliminary work on some of these latter
questions is to be done by the various national
Anglican-Roman Catholic committees on the basis of their
experience of local relations between the two churches.
In May, Bishop Raymond Lessard of Savannah, Ga., a
member of ARCIC, said the ecumenical dialogue of
Catholics and Anglicans had reached “an awkward
period.”
He said expectations were high for an eventual full
communion between the two faiths, but he said
significant obstacles still hindered that goal, including
disagreements on the questions of papal authority and the
ordination of women.

On Sunday September 16, Father P. James Costigan
and Father Gabriel Cummings, priests of St. Mary’s
on-the-Hill Augusta, will be joined by priests who
formerly served the parish at dedication ceremonies for
the renovated Parish Hall and new office building.
Ceremonies are scheduled at the 6 p.m. Evening Maas.

represent Bishop Lessard at the ceremonies.

LONDON (NC) -- “Substantial progress” towards
^ agreement on justification -- one of the crucial divisive
issues of the Reformation -- was reported by the
Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission
(ARCIC II), at the conclusion of its second meeting, held
in Durham, England, Aug. 22-31.
A statement issued after the meeting said the discussion
on church and salvation “made substantial progress in the
preparation of a statement on fundamental doctrinal
principles concerning salvation, justification and the role
of the church in God’s plan for the redemption of the
whole human race.”
The concept of justification involves the question of
how people are freed from sin to gain salvation in heaven:
Bishop Raymond W. Lessard will dedicate the new St.
^Andrew’s Church, Reidsville, on Sunday September 16.
The ceremonies are scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Industrial
Drive location.
Father Raymond J. Kulwicki C.S.Sp., Ph.D., pastor of
St. Andrews, has joined with members of the parish in
inviting all in the area to come and see this newest of
Tattnall County’s churches.
The Reidsville pastor says that we would have liked to
have sent invitations to everybody to attend the
dedication ceremonies “but the little building has its
limits.” “However,” he emphasized, “we are inviting all
who wish to come to the less formal Open House during
the hours of 1 to 3 p.m. and from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m.”
** In a spirit of ecumenism, Father Kulvicki asks members
of the community to “Come and see! Rejoice with us as
we praise God. Join your neighbors, friends, classmates
... on this Sunday, which the Lord has made. Let us all
be glad for the blessed event which God has allowed to
come to pass in our . . . community.”
Ground was broken for the new church in June of this
year on land donated by Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Curry. Before
the new building was completed, Mass was celebrated in a
house on Alexander Street and, before that, at the local
funeral home, thanks to the generosity of the late Frank
♦McCall.
