YOUTH VOLUNTEERS of St. Joseph
Hospital, Augusta, were honored at a luncheon
given in the Sister Mary Louise Conference
Room. This group of ten children, ranging in
age from 10-14, meet every Tuesday to stuff
animals that are given to the young patients.
A ten day tour of Panama sponsored by the National
Federation of Priest Councils will be available to priests
beginning February 1986. This first hand experience of the
pastoral activity of the Church in Central America is being
planned by members of the Priests’ Councils in the Atlanta
Province.
Panama was chosen for this study-experience program
because of the presence of the Vincentian Fathers and the
variety of their ministry. They conduct a seminary pro
gram where the students attend the University and live in a
residential area; the Vincentians also have urban and rural
parishes and have begun a Novitiate in a rural town to
prepare young men for religious life.

issues of Central American life without the intense partisan
debates which are present in other Central American coun
tries. The program is viewed as a primer on Central
America to assist participants to understand better the
basic issues and prepare them to travel and observe in
other Latin American countries.
The 1986 program/tour will begin on Monday, February
17th and conclude on Friday, February 28th. Participants
will be offered a socio-economic picture of Central
America, an experience of local religious practices, and
basic Christian communities, the theology of liberation, the
process of lay formation, the operation of pastoral teams,
the rural Church and ministry on banana plantations. Ses
sions on vocation and priestly ministry are to be included
and it is hoped that a visit with the Archbishop of Panama
City will be arranged. All parts of the experience will be in
English.
The number of participants will be limited to twelve in
order to enable optimum dialog and efficient travel. Final
selection of the twelve participants will be made by the
planning committee of priests from the Atlanta Province of
the National Federation of Priests’ Councils. Members of
the Committee are: Revs. Peter Clarke Chairperson, Paul
Byron, George Kloster, Gerald Lewis, H.C. Mulholland,
John Ranalli and Michael Shugrue.
The registration fee for the program is $400.00. This in
cludes room and board, seminars and program travel in
Panama. Group travel from a common departure point in
the United States to Panama will be arranged by the plann
ing committee at a group rate. This rate will not include the
fare from the priest’s home town to the point of common
departure.
