“COMPROMISING POSITIONS 4 * (PARAMOUNT)
Based on the popular novel by Susan Isaacs, it is the story
of a Long Island matron, Judith Singer (Susan Sarandon),
who gets caught up in the investigation of the murder of her
womanizing dentist, Bruce Fleckstein (Joe Mantegna).
A former journalist, now uncertain of her role in life,
Judith can’t resist launching an investigation of her own.
She swiftly comes into conflict with the detective in charge
(Raul Julia), but soon they become allies and, if he has his
way, something considerably more.
Under Frank Perry’s direction, which tends to flatten out
every scene and eschew all hint of sublety, “Compromising
Positions” is a shallow, contrived film unpleasantly smug
in orientation and leaning heavily to crude, sexually
oriented humor.
As a comedy-mystery, it is neither funny enough—falling
short of the social satire it aspires to—nor mysterious
enough.
Ms. Sarandon gives an appealing performance despite
everything, but Edward Herrmann and Mary Beth Hurt,
bot excellent performers, are wasted in the roles of Judith’s
insensitive husband and one of her neighbors who is a
suspect.

“And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will
make you to become fishers of men.” Mark 1:17
Christ spoke these words to Simon and his brother An
drew many hundreds of years ago. The brothers, fishermen
by profession, could very easily have ignored the words of
Christ, dismissing them as nonsense. However, some great
inner force, namely faith, caused them to immediately drop
their fishing nets and follow this great man. Simon and An
drew most probably did not realize the importance of their

calling. They were to become the first disciples, the first
two helpers of Christ, the first two individuals given the
responsibility of assisting the Lord in spreading His love
and good news. How lucky they were!
Much time has elapsed since those first two disciples
were chosen. Since then, there have been thousands upon
thousands of other “disciples”—priests, ministers, nuns,
deacons, religion teachers, helpers in the church, and altar
boys, to name a few. In fact, every single person who has

can be considered a disciple of Christ. As a Christian, I
crave the wonderful fulfillment of knowing that I have
helped to spread the Word of God. I satisfy this craving, in
part, by teaching the Kindergarten CCD class at my parish,
Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
Many people feel that it would require a great deal of
discipline to teach such a young, active group of children.
This is absolutely not true! I find that by combining a bit of
patience, some understanding, and a great deal of love, I
am quite able to hold the attention of the young people.
Believe it or not, the boys and girls are actually eager to
learn—to learn about Jesus, His miracles, His teachings,
and His love. The lesson plan that I use teaches the children
to incorporate Jesus into every aspect of their lives—home,
school, family, and friendship. I try to emphasize to the
children that although the church is God’s house, we should
remember the Lord every day of the week. We should trust
God and ask Him to show us the difference between right
and wrong. He will answer all of our prayers! As I teach my
students these wonderful things, I discover that I am learn
ing, too! So, in reality, the children and I learn together.
It is indeed a heart-warming experience to watch
children grow spiritually. I always look forward to Sunday
mornings, my CCD class, and my happy young friends.
Last year, my class consisted of only three students. This
year, my class may be huge. But whether I have one stu
dent or thirty students, teaching CCD class is one of my
greatest joys! I feel so lucky to be ranked among God’s
many disciples, among his “fishers of men.”
Sir William Osier once said, “No bubble is so iridescent or
floats longer than that blown by the successful teacher.” I
pray that, as a CCD teacher, I will be able to blow a bubble
of God’s divine love—a bubble that will never burst.
