A gift of $5,000, sent to the Bishop of
Biloxi by Bishop Raymond W. Lessard,
helped that sister Diocese in its efforts to
recover from the devastation of Hurricane
Elena.
Most Rev. Joseph L. Howze expressed
his heartfelt thanks in a recent letter to
Bishop Lessard in which he described the
damage to many churches, schools, halls,
rectories and convents, as well as to his
cathedral.
Describing the ordeal, Bishop Howze
wrote:
Hurricane Elena kept us concerned for
four days before it struck. We evacuated
on Thursday, August 26, closing the office
and canceling all engagements. When the
Hurricane Warning was changed to a
“Watch” on Friday evening, we thought
we were somewhat safe: then the storm
stalled so long off the Florida Coast. By
Sunday afternoon, we were placed on
“Warning” again, evacuation plans were
put into action, and we knew the storm was
heading our way. Sunday night was a time
of anxiety. When the hurricane hit on Mon
day morning (6a.m.), with its powerful 125
mph winds, everything happened: huge
oaks fell over like small bushes; tall pines
broke like match sticks; power and phone
lines fell; roofs flew off; and buildings col
lapsed like cardboard boxes.
When everything was over, and we went
out to survey the damage, it was
unbelieveable what one saw. Riding
around, I continue to see devastation that I
had not seen before. Many of our churches,
schools, halls, rectories and convents suf
fered damage. The Cathedral received
very extensive damage, our Chancery Of
fice received very minor damage and my
residence came through with only a few
missing shingles. Today is a beautiful day
and I pray it stays this way because a lot of
homes and businesses are still without
roofs.
This hurricane will probably be more
costly than previous ones because Florida,
Mississippi, and part of Alabama suffered
losses. Everything is gradually returning
to normal, but there is still a lot to be done.
The effects of Hurricane Elena will be
around for some time to come.
