Volunteering
America's
BY ELEANOR H. KLINE
Since Augusta’s St. Joseph Hospital Aux
iliary was founded twenty-two years ago
on January 25. 1965 it has grown from a
membership of 72 under the leadership of
Mary Ward to the present membership of
359 under the current president, Anne
Wiggs.
Not only are Auxilians united by a com
mon cause, to serve St. Joseph Hospital
but many have family ties. There are
several mother-daughter combinations,
sisters, even more cousins and most
recently nine wife-husband teams. The en
thusiasm of volunteering is shared by all.
The wide range of services appeal in dif
ferent ways to the members. Some prefer
to work as a member of a team e.g.

Desk, or in a number of other volunteer
services. Gift Shop, Flower Delivery, Ad
missions, Courier, Lifeline, Pastoral and
Physicians Referral. One will certainly ap
peal to any given member.
There is also a Junior Volunteer Pro
gram. These young people contributed 926
hours last year.
Proceeds from the Gift Shop are donated
to the hospital to improve vital areas and
purchase hospital equipment. Nursery
equipment is purchased from the baby
photo profits and a Nursing Scholarship
Fund consists of monies sent in for
memorials, remembrances and donations.
Every volunteer should be proud of the
contribution made by each individual to
hospital, church and community. This is
part of America's Strength.
