Disabilities Task Force
To Hold Retreat In June
Members of a newly-organized
Disabilities Task Force for the Diocese of
Savannah have decided to hold a retreat
during June to come up with goals and ob
jectives in their overall mission to make
the Church more accessible to the dis
abled.
During their organizational meeting at
the Catholic Pastoral Center in Savannah
May 17, the group decided to hold a second
meeting on May 30 at 12:30 p.m. to plan the
retreat.
The group watched the video “We Are
One Flock,” produced by the National
Catholic Office for Persons With
Disabilities, which pointed out that “the
parish is the door for disabled people to
become involved” in the Church.
Sr. Kateri Mielnicki, OSF, Diocesan
Vicar for Social Ministry, called the
organizational meeting of the group. Serv
ing as co- chairman of the Task Force are
Jeanne Bandy and Mary E. Porter. Also
attending the initial meeting were: Jenny
Brown, Iris Dayoub, Pam Harris, Gaines
Hutchinson, Louise Lynch, Sr. Barbara
Shimkus, Betty Simmons, Mary O'Brien,
Dorothy O’Neil and Elizabeth Johnson.
Members of the group who were unable to
attend the initial meeting are Julie
Workmon, Rose Miller and Mary Johnson.

To Mark Silver Jubilee
mons, Vicar General of the Diocese of
Savannah.
On May 8 Fr. Simmons observed the 25th
anniversary of his ordination to the
priesthood. He was ordained by former
Savannah Bishop Thomas J. McDonough
at Holy Family Church in Columbus.
A native of Charleston, S.C., Fr. Sim
mons served as assistant pastor of Blessed
Sacrament Church in Savannah for three
years following his ordination. He served
as assistant pastor of Nativity of Our Lord
Church in Savannah in 1968-69 and as
parochial administrator of Nativity from
mid-1969 to 1971.
From June, 1971, to August, 1983, he
served as pastor of Holy Trinity Church in
Augusta. He returned to Savannah after
that to become pastor of Blessed Sacra
ment, serving there until 1988.
In August, 1988 Bishop Raymond W.
Lessard appointed Fr. Simmons rector of
the Cathedral. The bishop had appointed
him Vicar General in 1983.
The Jubilee Mass will begin at 10 a.m. in
the Cathedral Sunday with Fr. Simmons
serving as main celebrant and homilist. A
reception will follow in St. Vincent’s Gym.
All friends, parishioners and former
parishioners have been invited to attend.

McAULEY MEDAL RECIPIENTS — Pictured are the three St. Vin

Lee and Mrs. Marilyn Coleman Kelly were honored for their leadrship,
service and dedication to St. Vincent’s Academy. The medal is named for
Venerable Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy.
Scholarships Sought For Villa Marie
Contributions are being sought for
scholarships to send children to Camp
Villa Marie in Savannah this summer.
The money will go towards sending
children who want to attend the camp but
whose parents cannot afford the fees. The
cost of the one-week camp sessions is $75
for the religious education sessions for
children in grades 2-6. The fee for the
youth leadership session for teen-agers is
$125 and the cost for tne Junior High
Leadership Camp is $150 per sperson.
Donations in any amount will be ac
cepted. Contributions may be mailed to
Camp Villa Marie, 601 E. Liberty St.,
Savannah, Ga. 31401-5196. More informa

young people, Cathode and non-Cathode, from
the Diocese of Savannah and other places throughout
the country, who are helping the Carmelite Nuns
of Savannah, Georgia by their contributions.
