CALLING AND PRESENTATION of the candidate — Bishop
Lessard inquires as to the worthiness of the candidate before accepting
him and calling him to ordination as a priest. After Walker’s accept
ance by the bishop, the hundreds gathered to witness the ordination
offered an expression of approval by applause.

Members of Walker s iamily, Mrs. Ann G. Park and Mr.
and Mrs. James J. Richardson, presented the gifts for the
Eucharistic liturgy to Bishop Lessard. who in turn
presented the chalice of wine and paten of bread to the
newly-ordained Fr. Walker.
Following the ordination and a reception Saturday,
Father Walker celebrated his first Mass Sunday at St.
James Church, where he has been serving as a transitional
deacon.
Bishop Lessard has assigned Fr. Walker to serve as
assistant pastor at St. James.
Landings Garden Club
Receives Miller Award
At the 1990 Annual Awards Banquet of
the Mental Health Association of Coastal
Empire. Inc., at the Hunter Army Air
Field Officer s Club. Mrs. Eugenia
Johnson, Executive Director of the
Tidelands Community Mental Health
Association presented the Richard Miller
Volunteer Service Award to The Landings
Garden Club for valuable service on behalf
of the mentally ill. Mrs. Richard C. Sahe.
President of the club, accepted the award.
The late Mr. Miller, former resident of
The Landings, spearheaded the Group
Home project in 1988. Both homes, located
on Montgomery Crossroads are now com
pleted and known as “St. Luke s Place.
Funded by the Department of Housing and
Urban Development and sponsored by the
Catholic Diocese of Savannah, residents of
the homes are the chronically mentally ill
who are employable in the community, but
need assistance at meal and medication
times.
The two group homes, known as The
Dick Miller House and The Donnelly
House, in honor of Msgr. Felix Donnelly
who was also instrumental in developing
the project, were completed in February
with The Landings Garden Club, through
fund raising projects, donating $2,000
toward the landscaping and a limited
watering system.
ALL SMILES FOR SILVER JUBILEE — Fr. William F. Simmons
embraces his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William F. Simmons of
Charleston, S.C., at a reception held at St. Vincent’s Gym in Savannah
May 27 on the occasion of Fr, Simmons’ 25th anniversary of his ordina
tion to the priesthood. Fr. Simmons, who is rector of the Cathedral and
Vicar General for the Diocese of Savannah, was main celebrant and
homilist for a Silver Jubilee Mass celebrated at the Cathedral prior to
the reception, which was sponsored by Cathedral parish. (Photo by

Convention, as he prepared church of
ficials to utilize the 1990 census. The Rev.
Don Leiter, the Council s executive direc
tor, announced in his report that a clergy
continuing education program, beginning
in October, will bring clergy in geographic
town and country communities together
for 36 hours of study on their community’s
culture, economic base, leadership and
how the church can participate in com
munity development.
Other items that came before the Coun
cil included co-sponsorship of a Southeast
Global Forum on Environmental Sur
vival; recognition of Sr. Patricia Brown
for organizing the People of the Road
Coalition for migrants; plans for inter
pretation of the Consultation on Churches
Uniting covenanting process; and receiv
ing the goals report of the Joint Commis
sion for Women s Concerns.
Others from the 1) ; se of Savannah
who participated in the Council meeting in
cluded: Deacon Fretwell Crider,
ecumenical officer; Marie Crider; Sr.
Kateri Mielnicki, Vicar for Social
Ministry; and Howdy Thurman, director
of the Fort Valley Migrant Ministry.
Fr. James Mayo, pastor of St.
Benedict’s, and several of his parishioners
prepared and served the meals for the par
ticipants in the meeting.
The constituent participants of the
Georgia Christian Council include the
Georgia jurisdictions of the African
Methodist Episcopal Church, the African
Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, the
Christian Church (Disciples), the Chris
tian Methodist Episcopal Church, the
Church of the Brethren, the Episcopal
Church, the Evangelical Lutheran in
America, the Greek Orthodox Church,
Presbyterian Church (USA), the Roman
Catholic Church, the Salvation Army, the
United Church of Christ and the United
Methodist Church. Advisory participants
include the Church Women United in
Georgia, and the Christian Council of
Metro Atlanta.
