Preliminary recommendations
(Continued from page 1)
to Bishop J. Kevin Boland by the end
of May.
“The steering committee has been
meeting with good, committed people
who carry out the work of the Church
in their parishes,” said Sister Mary
Frances Sobczak, diocesan coordina
tor for the feasibility study. “The
committee has listened carefully to
what they had to say about the strong
and vibrant ministries that are under
way in these parishes and has noted
the strengths and challenges each
parish faces. The committee has
revised and refined their recommen
dations following these sessions.”
She added, “Further dialogue and
consultations will take place before
the recommendations go to the bish
op.”
Nativity, which is located on Victo
ry Drive in Thunderbolt, is the site of
the only weekly Spanish-language
Mass in the Savannah Deanery. Steer
ing committee members said they are
studying proposals to strengthen min
istry to the Hispanic community as
well as to find a permanent location
for the celebration of the Spanish
Mass if Nativity closes.
The committee is also looking at
ideas for a permanent home for the
mission of Sts. Peter and Paul. The
mission, which celebrates Mass in the
chapel of the Cathedral of St. John
the Baptist, serves the Vietnamese
community.
The preliminary recommendations
for Most Pure Heart of Mary Church,
located at 902 W. 36th Street in mid
town, and St. Anthony of Padua, at
Fell and Bay streets on the westside,
call for one priest to serve both
parishes for a one year period while
they develop a plan to merge. One

pastor would serve the merged parish
at a site to be decided upon as part of
the planning.
The steering committee suggested
in preliminary recommendations that
Our Lady of Lourdes Parish relocate
in the western part of Chatham Coun
ty within the next three to five years.
Currently the church is located in Port
Wentworth on land deeded to the Dio
cese of Savannah by the Savannah
Sugar Refining Corporation in 1939.
The steering committee said that
population growth on the westside
and the small capacity of the present
church building point to a need for a
larger facility.
Michael B. Brown is chairman of
the steering committee. Members
include Anthony Abbott, Charles
Bell, Jef Boutin, Robert Blakewood,
Linda Davis, Gwendolyn Johnson,
Father John A. Kenneally, Allen Lan
caster, Sister Mary Faith McKean,
Anne Monaghan, Father Frances J.
Nelson, Father William O. O’Neill,
Robert Scanlon, Patricia Signs and
Sister Mary Frances.
They began their work in November

1997 with Father David Baldwin,
Director of Research and Planning for
the Archdiocese of Chicago and a
pastor, serving as consultant/facilita
tor.
“Bishop J. Kevin Boland has the
vision of leadership,” Brown said.
“He has recognized that sometimes in
the past we have reacted to changes
and trends rather than actively plan
ning and guiding our future.”
Besides appointing the steering
committee, which represents a broad
range of lay and professional staff
representatives, the bishop called for
the parishes themselves, through
parish councils and planning commit
tees, to be active participants in the
year-and-a-half long planning
process. Each parish was asked to
conduct a self-study and to develop
ministry and administrative plans to
meet the pastoral needs of their com
munities for the next five years.
Strategic planning is also underway
in the Augusta Deanery and is expect
ed to reach the other five deaneries in
the diocese in the future.
