Bishop “U.S. church
CHALLENGED BY ITS
CHANGING MEMBERSHIP”
Washington (CNS)
he U.S. church, “on the eve of
the third millennium,” recognizes
that “it has become a microcosm of
the universal church,” says Bishop
Joseph A. Fiorenza of Galveston-
Houston. It is a “multicomplexioned
body in which racial, ethnic and lin
guistic differences are welcomed,”
said the bishop, president of the
National Conference of Catholic
Bishops. But this changing complex
ion of the church brings a number of
challenges for U.S. Catholics, he
said, writing in the November 20
issue of America magazine, the natio
nal Jesuit weekly published in New
York.

suble gently rocked the censer as
he walked forward at the head of a
funeral procession to “cross the
line”—trespassing on a U.S. military

at the gates of Fort Benning

ever—4,500 crossed the line behind
the chasuble-clad Steve Jacobs
because they believe it’s time to close
the Army’s School of the Americas
that is housed at the Georgia military
base. Sixty-five people were arrested

will be prosecuted, said Lisa Chen,
SOA Watch publicist.
Bishop DuMaine resigns
in San Jose; Bishop
McGrath succeeds him
Washington (CNS)
ope John Paul II has accepted the
resignation of Bishop R. Pierre
Dumaine of San Jose, Calif. His suc
cessor is Bishop Patrick J. McGrath,
who has been coadjutor bishop of
San Jose since last year. Until his
resignation, Bishop DuMaine had
been the only head of the San Jose
Diocese since its creation in 1981.
Two years ago, he had asked the
pope to name a coadjutor to assist
him until his eventual retirement. The
resignation of Bishop DuMaine, 68,
was accepted under provisions in
church law for health or other serious
reason. The changes were announced
at the Vatican November 27.

SLAIN HOMELESS MEN
Denver (CNS)
he murders of several homeless
men in downtown Denver should

deeply on the sanctity of every
human person,” said Denver
Archbishop Charles J. Chaput. The

candlelight vigil at Denver’s City and
County Building. The vigil, which
drew 200 people, was held in memo

Denver since September 7. On
November 17 the decapitated bodies
of two apparently homeless men
were discovered in a weed-covered
field behind the train station in the
city’s trendy Lower Downtown area.
Archbishop: Curia
POLITICS ‘A SERIOUS
IMPEDIMENT’ to unity
San Francisco (CNS)
hurch authority as carried out
under the Roman Curia’s current
structure is “a serious impediment” to
Christian unity, said retired
Archbishop John R. Quinn of San
Francisco. “I firmly believe that if
the politics and processes of the
Curia do not change,” Christian unity
will remain elusive, said Archbishop
Quinn, who retired in 1995. In recent
talks to Catholic groups in the San
Francisco area, he said changes in the
Roman Curia as well as how the
papacy is exercised are central issues
facing discussions of Christian unity.
