Masses, prayer services and re treats that target their needs are a foundation of our ministry. We seek to make prayer and church accessible and relevant. We provide experiences of prayer and community that remind them why having a “church family” is important at any age. Dinners, social events and a place to meet with other Catholics can help bridge the gap between family life and college life. These activities dis pel the myth that they are the lone Catholic on campus and provides a community of friends with similar beliefs and questions. Educational events, such as bible studies, and discussions help them to grow in their faith. They provide the information that enables them to stand up proudly and engage in the discus sions of religion and morality. We help to ground them in gospel values and Benefit Concert for Savannah Catholic Schools to be held in September The eighth annual Savannah Symphony Benefit Concert for Schools in memory of Sister Mary Frances Sobczak, former Superintendent of Schools, will be presented on Wednesday, September 27 at Benedictine Military School, Savannah The pre-concert courtyard reception/auction begins at 6:30 p.m. and the doors open at 7:30 p.m. The concert is from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. This year’s theme is Music of The Night. This enables them to better integrate Catholic practices and morals into their lives. Campus ministers are ambassadors from the Catholicism to academia. They are not surrogate parents, who hound students into life of worship and prayer. Young adults need to be invited to participate as useful, important members of the communi ty. They need to see how they can positively impact the church and how church, prayer and belief can be an asset in their lives. Campus ministers provide opportu nities for involvement, an active presence on campus and welcoming environment. They strive to be peo ple who embody the gospel in the academic world. Campus ministry seeks to welcome all students and accept them as they come to us. We help them to develop and pursue goals that will lead to their happiness and spiritual growth. We can not do it alone. We need the help of students, faculty, staff, friends and parents to be the bridge to student participation. The invita tion from one student to another means more than all the posters and publicity we can do. A parent who shows their student where the church is and attends with them can have a real impact. A faculty or staff mem ber that befriends a student and shares their faith can make church feel more like home. When faculty members come to student liturgies and events they are a wonderful sym bol that academia and faith are com patible. Friends from home who encourage prayer and participation are doing an important service. If you want to learn more about campus ministry, I am available to give you some basic information and to help make the initial contact with the local campus minister. I’ll be away during the month of June but would be happy to talk you any other time. E-mail me at jchall@gsaix2.cc. gasou.edu or call Saint Matthew Parish and Newman Center at 912- 681-6726. Please feel free to contact me or your student’s local campus minister to help in this important moment of transition for your family. We all need support in the big transi tions of life; let the church help you celebrate and negotiate this one.
