(Continued from page I) of the parish communities of Saint Stephen, Hines- ville (Donahue’s home parish), Saint Anne, Co lumbus (where he spent two summers) and the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, Savannah (where he spent one summer) to stand as witnesses to the candidate’s worthiness. Representatives of Saint Mary’s Seminary and 75 young men from the Vocatio Dei vocations camp also stood to bear witness to his worthiness. When the bishop formally elected Timothy Dona hue for “priesthood in the presbyteral order,” the congregation enthusiastically demonstrated its con sent with sustained applause. In his homily, Bishop Boland stressed God’s per sonal call: “Must not some one of us say some thing about God, about eternal life, about the Photos by Jonas N. Jordan. majesty of grace in our sanctified being?” the bish op asked, adding, “that ‘some one’ is you.” The bishop pointed out that priests are not perfect and that in their weakness the power of God is made manifest. After the bishop’s homily and instruction to the priest-elect, the bishop “examined” him, that is, he questioned him concerning his intentions regarding the undertaking of the priestly office. Deacon Donahue then prostrated himself before the altar as the saints were invoked in the litany. He then knelt before the bishop, who laid his hands on the candidate’s head in an apostolic ges ture. All the priests present came forward to impose hands. The bishop then recited the prayer of consecration, invoking the Holy Spirit on the candidate, who thus became a priest of the Church, in the order of presbyters. Father Brannen then vested Father Donahue in the stole and chasuble of the priestly order. Bishop Boland anointed the new priest’s hands with sacred chrism and handed him the paten and chalice, the bread and wine for the Eucharist, presented by his brothers, Patrick and Dennis, and his sister, Kathleen. Then the bishop and all the priests offered their new brother the sign of peace—in most cases, a bear-hug— and Father Donahue concelebrated Mass for the first time. Bishop Boland also announced Father Donahue’s first priestly assignment as parochial vicar of Saint Anne Parish, Columbus. At the end of the ceremony, Bishop Boland knelt before Father Donahue for his first blessing. Left: Father Donahue concelebrates for the first time at his ordination Mass. Right: Participants in the Vocatio Dei retreat join in saying the Lord’s prayer at the ordination.
