This year of jubilee also marks the sixty-fifth consecutive year that the Church has so hon ored its catechists. Catechetical Sunday was established in 1935 when the Congregation of the Clergy (the Vatican office responsible for catechesis) decreed: “In order that the minds of Christian people may be directed to religious instruction, let a Catechetical Day be estab lished in each parish, if this has not already been done. On this day, let the Feast of Christian Doctrine be cele brated with as much solemnity as possible.” Some of the earliest Catechetical Sundays were cele brated with vestibule displays of posters, catechetical literature, and materials from the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. Sunday sermons were focused on the importance of catechesis. The practice of dioceses using a Sunday in September for Catechetical Day led to the name Catechetical Sunday. Today, parishes usually honor their catechists by hold- Sunday ing a public commissioning ceremony and special blessing at Mass. Following the blessing, parishioners congratulate the catechists for sharing their gift with the Church. Frequently, parishes also schedule some type of public reception or celebration to honor catechists. The theme for Catechetical Sunday 2000, “A Year of Favor: Making All Things New,” is drawn from Pope John Paul II’s apostolic letter On the Coming of the Third Millennium (Tertio Millennio Adveniente). The pope’s theme comes from Isaiah 61:2 and from Revelation 21:3-5. It echoes the Church's ongoing cel ebration of the Jubilee Year. Catechetical Sunday allows us to appreciate the favor our catechists have brought to the Church, and to celebrate the significance of their message, the Good News of Jesus Christ.
