I Diocese of Savannah Vol. 80, No. 39 Thursday, November 9, 2000 Election results UNCLEAR -—PAGE 3 $.50 PER ISSUE Overview of bishops’ agenda Washington (CNS) ore than 20 votes on statements or other actions await the U.S. Catholic bishops when they hold their annual fall meeting in Washington November 13-16. Here is a quick look at the agenda items that are up for a vote: —A pastoral statement, “Unity in Diver sity: Welcoming the Immigrant Church in the U.S.” —A resolution on immigration reform. —A statement, “Responsibility, Rehabi litation and Restoration: A Catholic Per spective on Crime and Criminal Justice.” —“Sudan’s Cry for Peace,” a statement on the genocidal war in Sudan. —“The U.S. Supreme Court and the Cul ture of Death,” a statement on the high court’s persistent denial of rights to the unborn. —“Built of Living Stones,” a set of nation al guidelines for art and architecture in places of Catholic worship. —Adoption of the Mexican Lectionary as the new translation for Scripture readings in U.S. Spanish-language liturgies. —A proposal on how and when to revise the Lectionary for Masses With Children. —Establishment in 2002 of a new standing Committee on Catechesis. —Final modifications in the statutes under which the current National Conference of Catholic Bishops and U.S. Catholic Con ference are merged and restructured to form the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. —Revised guidelines for the retirement of bishops. —A resolution to assist diocesan bishops in exercising their diocesan audit and financial reporting responsibilities. —Reauthorization of 16 current ad hoc committees for three more years unless their work is done before that. —Election of a new NCCB secretary and several committee chairmen. —Approval of an NCCB-USCC budget of $49.3 million for 2001. —Approval of an $ 11.6 million assessment of dioceses in 2002, an increase of about 2.5 percent over 2001. —A series of votes on NCCB-USCC plans for 2001, including one on a proposal to add the multicultural dimension of the church as a new area of special emphasis. —A proposal to narrow the ordinary range of ages within which U.S. Latin-rite bish ops can set diocesan policy for confirma tion of children. —Two proposals for U.S. legislation implementing general church law on the qualifications and permission needed by priests, religious and other Catholics if they regularly speak about church teaching on radio or television. pound bell back into the south spire of the Ca thedral of Saint John the Baptist, Savannah.
