Kansas City Star follow-up criticized on priests with AIDS Washington (CNS) atholic spokesmen have again criticized The Kansas City Star daily newspaper for its coverage of priests with AIDS—this time for a follow-up in response to the earlier criticisms. For the four-article fol low-up published November 4, The Star said it comprehensively reviewed priests’ death certificates from 1987 to 1998 in 14 states where those documents are public records. The less-scientific data-gathering and statistical comparison methods for its original series eight months earlier had come under sharp criti cism. The newspaper’s latest report said that “the average annual AIDS death rate for priests in the states where death records were available was 6 per 10,000, which is more than double that of the adult male popula tion in those states and more than six times that of the general population in those states.” The U.S. Catholic Conference De partment of Communications, headed by Monsignor Francis Maniscalco, said in a statement November 6 that The Star “systematically violated the privacy of deceased priests in 14 states. If any organization other than a journalistic one tried to do some thing like this, it would quickly hear from an outraged public.” Anew way to see Hawaii. Anew way to take acruise. Seven nights. The school’s leaders have long been known for their anti-Catholic rheto ric. Bush later apologized for not clearly disassociating himself from the anti-Catholic allegations. Youth Leaders Lc dult leaders of Youth Ministry from nine parishes in the Diocese joined in a workshop sponsored by the Office of Youth Ministry, and led by Barb Garvin. Ms. Garvin drew on her own extensive experience in parish youth ministry for practical, some times dramatic, examples of opportu nities and pitfalls. The workshop was held in Dublin October 20-21 and was based on the document “Renewing the Vision,” of Grieboski, who hadn’t yet seen the exit poll data, said that other prelimi nary information the Institute on Religion and Public Policy had received seemed to show that some Catholics were willing to vote for Bush over Gore primarily over the issue of abortion. But when it came to voting for House and Senate races, abortion was not the deciding factor for many Catholics. He said he thinks that is because “both campaigns doing a good job of scaring people about the impact of abortion and the Supreme Court.” m “Be-Attitudes” the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, which Ms. Garvin calls “a gift” to all in this ministry. She is currently assistant director of the Archdiocesan Youth Ministry Office in Atlanta. The “Be-Attitudes,” she says, are “Be Prepared. Be Yourself. Be Organized. Be Flexible. Be Open. Be Firm. Be Happy. And above all Be lieve that God is involved in the lives of the young people.” “One Faith...
